September 23rd, 2014 In the News Big News: Advocate and NorthShore Are Merging On September 12, Jim Skogsbergh, Advocate President and CEO announced that Advocate Health Care and NorthShore University HealthSystem intend to combine to create Advocate NorthShore Health Partners (ANHP). When complete, ANHP will be the largest integrated health care delivery system in Illinois and the 11th largest not-for- profit health care system in the United States, serving 3 million patients annually. ALGH President Rick Floyd invited all associates to join him for an Associate Forum on the day the merger was announced. A number of associates who were able to step away from work had an opportunity to ask any questions they had regarding the big news. For those of you who did not have a chance to join the forum, here’s a list of Frequently Asked Questions. As Jim Skogsbergh pointed out in a message that was sent to all Advocate associates, while we don’t yet have all the answers, in the coming months, our combined leadership teams and Boards of Directors will make smart, thoughtful decisions on how we can best advance quality patient care, improve efficiencies and help make health care more affordable for our patients. The agreement is subject to multiple regulatory approvals, including the Federal Trade Commission, the State of Illinois and the United Church of Christ. Dr. Harvey Max Chochinov, OM, ME, PhD, FRCPC, FRSC, FCAHS
Dr. Harvey Max Chochinov is a leader in palliative care. He is Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and Director of the Manitoba Palliative Care Research Unit at CancerCare Manitoba. He has been a guest lecturer in many major academic institutions around the world. He is recognized as Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2014 he was inducted as an Officer in the Order of Canada.
Session 1: Dignity, Personhood, and the Culture of Medicine 10:00 – 11:30 am (9:15-10:00 am—continental breakfast will be served)

Analyze various studies addressing the issue of dignity, personhood, and implications regarding the culture of medicine;
Discuss ways of eliciting personhood and track sources of end-of-life distress; and
Interpret dignity therapy sufficiently, so as to know which patients approaching end of life might benefit from this novel therapeutic approach...
Session 2: Anatomy of Effective Therapeutic Communication: A Workshop 1:30 – 3:00 pm Advocate Lutheran General’s Johnson Auditorium (registration required) Objectives:
Explore an overview of the development of optimal therapeutic efficacy;
Explain each component of the model of therapeutic efficacy and how they enhance communication with patients who are distressed; and
Distinguish how the model can be applied to teaching communication skills through the use of case examples.

• He joined the Department in January 2010 as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, overseeing the Office of Health Policy. Under his leadership, the Office of Health Policy was integral to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act
