The Student Concert Committee is excited to welcome you to the Spring 2021, Modern Dance Student Concert! We appreciate you joining us in a virtual space this year so we can keep our audience and dancers safe. We are proud to showcase the works of School of Dance students who are getting creative within COVID-19 guidelines and still pushing forward to make dance. We as a committee highly encourage mask wearing and social distancing, as well as the guidance put out by the School of Dance and the University of Utah.

This production would not have been possible without the help of many hardworking and dedicated individuals. The Student Concert Committee would specifically like to thank Cole Adams, Isaac Taylor, Sean Carter, Rebecca Johnson, Luc Vanier, Ben Sandberg, Austin Hardy, Molly Powers, and the other School of Dance faculty members who have guided us along the way. We would like to extend our gratitude to the College of Fine FAF Grant Committee for awarding the Committee a grant. We would also like to thank the many choreographers and dancers who are a part of our show--your work and artistry are beautiful and we could not have done this production without you!

Thank you for your continued support and we hope you enjoy the show!

Sincerely,Chloe Barry, Fiona Thomas, Ellen Weiler, and Lia Wong

ProximityChoreographers and Performers: Rebecca Aguilar & Susan BurnapMusic: Michael Wall

NOTEAfter a year of not being able to experience human touch, we saw an opportunity as roommates to create a work that explores this.

a w a k e n i n gChoreographer, Videographer, and Editing: Lia WongDancer: Hayli HenrettyMusic: Ritual Reverence and Confessions by Michael Wall

NOTEPlaying with the relationship between movement, landscape, camera, and editing, this piece could be viewed as an exploration, journey, or excerpt for an uncreated work. I view it as an opportunity to create a new world. It is a documentation of a person’s everchanging body and the experiences that have brought her to this specific moment. Thank you Hayli for exploring new possibilities with me!

rom(d)anceChoreographer: Angeline BourgeaultDancers: Alyssa King, Josie Kolbeck, Abby PaceMusic: “26 Miles (Santa Catalina)” by The Four Preps

NOTEI wanted to make something joyful and a little silly, and this is the product of that. Thanks Abby, Alyssa, and Josie for dancing with me in pandemic times and being on board with the glasses.

Short StoriesChoreographer, Dancer, Editing: Stephanie GarcíaAnimations: Rachel Ryle, Elliot Park, Wojciech Rochowicz, Andreas Hykade, Angela Steffen, Studio Film BilderMusic: Amersan and Cayetano

NOTE: Day by day, I find myself impressed -some others scared- about how audiovisual production has shaped people’s worldview. Since I was a child, I remember driving my imagination to create places that I referenced in the movies and cartoons I watched. Flying, being invisible, or living in an animated drawings world. With Short Stories, I gave it a chance to find limitations in freedom, in imagination a route for my creativity, and in technology, the possibility for making it real.

The Thick and Constellational NOWChoreographer and Dancer: Elle TaylorMusic: Trumpet 2 by Michael Wall

NOTE : When we look up at constellations in the night sky, we are peering into multiple different fragments of the past, all culminating into our present. In this piece, I am exploring what it feels like to sink into this kind of constellational now. I wanted to navigate the internal sensation of being fully in the present moment and how it can so beautifully connect my inner self to the world around me.

I’m not explainingChoreographer, Videographer, and Editing: Jamie Chen Dancer: Grace WardMusic: 5 115 by Michael Wall NOTE I’m not explaining.

The Human Paradox (excerpt)Choreographer and Dancer: Chloe BarryMusic: Ný Batterí by Sigur Rós

NOTE This is an excerpt of a larger piece that explores human nature and its contradictions. I am fascinated by human nature because it is so paradoxical. In this section I focused on how humans relate to the environment. Many of our actions harm the world we live on, but due to how natural systems are set up, the harm we cause will eventually be returned to us unless we change our relationship to the environment.

Effect or AffectChoreographer: Hailey CalkinsDancers: Meaghan Flannagan, Megan McHugh, Olivia Richardson, Vivienne Williams, Lia Wong Music: “Future Free” by Frank Ocean and “Tunglio” by Olafur Arnalds

NOTEHow does our past impact who we do and do not become? What influences what we keep with us and what we disregard? This piece is inspired by my own journey of uncovering what elements in my life have affected me and how I chose to grow with or away from them.
