1­ A  comprehensive  study  found  that Facebook overuseamong teens was significantly correlated with narcissism.Adolescent  girls  found  that  the  more  they  used  texting,instant messaging and other social media to discuss theirproblems,  particularly  romantic  difficulties,  the  moredepressive  symptoms  they  presented.  Researchersbelieve  that  the  ease  and  frequency  in  communicationusing different technologies allow people to “co­ruminate”on their problems, without providing any solutions.2­  Another  study  found  that  increased  media  exposure,including  television,  movies,  video  games,  and  theInternet,  was  associated  with  violent  behavior  andisolation.  It  reported  that  children  who  watched  violent

shows were not only more likely to be more aggressive, but also to have fewer friends and to bemore  secluded  socially.  The  researchers  concluded  that  children  who  are  aggressive  will  havefewer  friends and be more  likely  to  be bullies  (because  they are more aggressive)  or  victims ofbullying (because they are isolated).3­  There  is  considerable  debate  whether  dependence  on  technology  can  be  considered  anaddiction,  like  alcohol,  drugs,  or  gambling.  Some  experts  in  the  area  argue  that  the  unhealthydependence  on  technology may  be  a  symptom  of  some more  fundamental  pathology,  such  asdepression  or  anxiety,  and  Internet  addicts  use  technology  to  self­medicate  and  relieve  theirsymptoms.4­  Some  people  believe  that  technology  is  neither  good  nor  bad,  but,  at  the  same  time,  it  isn’tneutral  either.  The  impact  that  technology  has  on  your  children  depends  not  on  the  technologyitself, but rather on how you educate them about it and the experiences they have with it. It is ourresponsibility to become informed about the potential benefits and costs of this new digital age andthen make deliberate decisions about the type and quantity of technology you expose yourself oryour children to.

Read the short texts and answer the next three questions. Text A:  Changing  jobs  is  quite  natural  for many  people  nowadays.  Psychological  research  hasshowed that a person will have more chances to succeed if he changes his vocation within 5 to 7years of work. Thus, he will acquire new knowledge and experience and he will learn how to dealwith new unusual tasks. Even if you have created a dynamic plan for developing your career, newresponsibilities don't substitute old ones, but are just added to the existing duties. In other words,you  don't  change  your  activity  ­  but  the  sphere  of  your  responsibility  becomes  wider.  Howeverparadoxical  it  may  be,  after  a  few  years  in  the  same  job  people  are  more  likely  to  lose  theircompetence  than  to gain or  improve  it. They  fulfill  their duties mechanically with no passion andenthusiasm. That is why psychologists suggest changing the content of the work and not the place(company). 

Text  B:  Human  resource  managers  still  make  the  same  mistake:  they  are  looking  for  theapplicants with more than a year of experience. They don't consider retrained employees or thosewho  have  no  experience  in  the  pertinent  area.  They  don't  take  into  account  that  inexperiencedinternal  candidates  have  considerable  advantages  over  the  experts:  they  have  no  professionalclichés, they are ready to improve themselves, and they have sincere interest for the new job andothers.

Text C:  Today, more  and more  people  are  changing  their  specialty. Mostly,  it  applies  to  youngpeople.  People  older  than  35  years  old  have  less  flexible  thinking  ­  their  professional  life  isinfluenced by prevalent stereotypes and they have too high demands for themselves. Older peopleare  afraid  to  take  risks.  Even  if  his  dream  was  to  become  an  executive  of  car  manufacturingcompany, he won't write a resume. The idea of retraining seems senseless to older people. Mostof  them  can  neither  afford  nor  want  to  spend  their  time  and  money  for  obtaining  a  secondeducation.  Psychologists  admit  that  only  few  people  with  a  specific  personality  are  capable  ofabrupt changing their professional life. The ability to take reasonable risk in your professional life ­is the major factor of success. And on the contrary ­ fear of changes or failure inhibit your success.
