As work continues to recreate the Ritz Ballroom of the World War II era tickets are now on sale for the second Skye Swing Jazz Festival which takes place 30 October to 2 November. Once again Skye will come alive to the sounds of the 30s, 40s and 50s with audiences encouraged to dress in the style of the day. Recreating the successful formula of last year’s inaugural festival, the opening night features the mellow sounds of Rick Taylor, Mario Caribe, Malcolm Macfarlane, Mario Caribe and Gordon McNeil. Halloween has a black and white vampire theme with a screening of horror classic Nosferatu accompanied by Graeme Stephen’s live music score ‘Symphony of Horror’. On Saturday Broadford village hall will be

transformed into the Ritz Ballroom of the Blitz era complete with potted palms and mirror balls with Big Band ‘Rooty Ma Toot’ and finally on Sunday the dizzy tunes of the Stu Brown Septet, whose album was nominated in the top 10 Jazz albums of the year in the Mojo Awards. Audiences are encouraged to dress in horror costumes or black and white for the 31 October event and in 1940s style for the Big Band evening on Saturday. “The best weekend Skye has seen in years’ was how one audience member put it last year and this time organisers are hoping to welcome even greater numbers. Pam Allan of FOTS Records, joint organisers with SEALL (Skye Events for All) said ‘So much of the music of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s was about creating a great atmosphere to counteract some bleak times so there is a real sense of celebration and good feeling running through the festival. Around 45 of Scotland’s best musicians are coming to Skye and we’ve put a

programme together that we think will appeal to people of all ages.” Duncan Macinnes of SEALL said “Last year people from all over Skye and much further afield came and had a ball. Perthshire Amber Festival launches ‘Discoveries’ fringe programme

As autumn begins and the leaves start to turn, the team at the Perthshire Amber Festival are delighted to announce the Discoveries Programme for the 2014 festival. The Discoveries Programme sits alongside the afternoon and evening concerts as part of the ten-day festival, which starts on 24 October and runs for ten days. The aim is to welcome visitors to the festival to explore the wonderful history, landscapes, heritage, culture and communities of the beautiful region. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the festival and organisers are celebrating with a special Heritage inspired programme as part of the Homecoming Celebrations. Highlights from the The Discoveries Programme include: The Decorated Wheelbarrow Procession, The Cross, Dunkeld, Saturday 25 October 11am - A brilliant family friendly event, the decorated barrows are led by The Edradour and Blair Atholl Pipe Band in a procession through the streets of Dunkeld, followed by judging and music and song from the festival team. The Perthshire Amber Heritage Afternoon, Stanley Hill, Dunkeld, Saturday 25 October 12:30pm - This is a brand new event in partnership with National Trust for Scotland, to celebrate the Year of Homecoming. This is a family friendly, free afternoon of fun. Join us to enjoy some live music with fantastic festival favourites, The Dirty Beggars, Just Singin’ community choir and The Edradour and Blair Atholl Pipe Band. There will also be historical demonstrations from the National Trust for Scotland, ancient weaponry, craft and cooking in the Clanranald Medieval Village...and lots more! Discoveries Workshops, throughout the festival, various location in and around Dunkeld - The festival’s workshop programme includes the chance to try something new musically including Bohran, Mandolin, Group Singing, Gaelic Song and the Penny Whistle. There will also be workshop style concerts to come and experience Handbell Ringing and a performance by Tom Spiers and his family of “Far Ayont Bennachie" - Songs from the Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection. There is also a new non-musical workshop which is tipped to be very popular, called ‘Come and Discover Chocolate’ with local company Wicked Chocolate.

Guided Walks, throughout the festival, various starting points - Perthshire is incredibly beautiful with stunning autumnal colours during the festival and each year the guided walks are a very popular part of the festival programme. This year the walks focus on various aspects including; archaeology, nature, photographic walks and a special music walk in the footsteps of Niel Gow. Landmark year for 'sound' as acclaimed new music festival marks 10th anniversary

North East Scotland : 23 October - 10 November

For its 10th anniversary season the celebrated sound Festival will showcase a range of new approaches to traditional music it was announced today 1 September 2014. Among the international performers and ensembles featured in the opening weekend (23 – 26 October) are the eclectic tango duo Duquesa (Fabiana Galante, piano and Luis Conde, clarinet/saxophone), Vox/Nu-piping #2 (featuring Erwan Keraec, bagpipes, Donatienne Michel-Dansac, soprano, Vincent Bouchot, baritone and Benat Achiary, improvisation vocals), Fulgor al Bies (a quartet of artists from Argentina) and world-renowned cellist Rohan de Saram, who will perform with Jonathan Mayer, (tampura) and Erwan Keravec (bagpipes). Later in the festival Turkish harpist Sirin Pancaroglu will collaborate with Turkish electro acoustic composer Erdem Helvacioglu in a double-bill also featuring a new commission for hardanger fiddles and electronics by Rose Dodd. The 10th sound festival will open on 23 October with a concert featuring the Scottish Premiere of a work by Rolf Wallin which was co-commissioned by sound, The Wigmore Hall and the Bergan Festival for the virtuoso percussionist Colin Currie which has been chosen to be part of the PRS for Music Centenary year celebrations. The following night will see the first joint project between sound and its partner festival, Musiques Démesurées from Clermont-Ferrand, bringing together the musicians of Scotland’s Red Note Ensemble with the French ensemble, l’Orchestre d’Auvergne. The programme includes two new works commissioned jointly by the partners: one from Scottish composer William Sweeney and the other from French composer Laurence Cunion, both inspired by the WW1 centenary commemoration. The 2014 festival will then run until the 10 November 2014 and will feature over 50 performances, workshops, exhibitions and events in venues across north east Scotland. “It is hard to believe that we took our first steps towards creating a festival to celebrate new music in Scotland ten years ago,” says sound festival director Fiona Robertson. “Over the years we have taken audiences on journeys of discovery opening up new and exciting musical landscapes. As we enter our second decade we are looking forward to sharing more of the vibrant music making of contemporary composers and performers from Scotland and throughout the world.” “For our tenth anniversary festival we are delighted to bring to Scotland a range of international musicians and composers who are specialised in approaching traditional music in very new and different ways. Scottish and

French pipers, Argentinean tango bands, the great Sri Lankan cellist Rohan de Saram and the Turkish harpist, Sirin Pancaroglu, will all be appearing in the festival.” “These two joint commissions also mark the start of two new adventures. On the opening weekend of the festival they will be performed as the first joint project between sound and our partner festival, Musiques Démesurées, from Aberdeen’s twin city, Clermont-Ferrand. This will also be the first event with Red Note as our first-ever Associate Ensemble.” “Red Note’s first ever concert was at sound in 2009, and over the years they have been regular performers at the festival. We have also commissioned new pieces together including last year’s Framed Against the Sky with Brian Irvine and Billy Letford and Three Fables (Tales From the Commonwealth) by Stephen Montague and Zinnie Harris for the 2014 New Music Biennial. We are looking forward to developing our musical relationship, commissioning and creating new and exciting works.” New approaches to Traditional Music As a strand running throughout the 2014 festival, as part of Homecoming 2014 celebrations, sound will explore new approaches to traditional music this year. Featuring musicians, ensembles and compositions from across the globe the programme will illustrate the many different facets of this art form. Friends Old and New Among the many performers returning to sound this year are percussionists Colin Currie and Joby Burgess. These two remarkable musicians were part of the ensemble which blew audiences away with their performance of Steve Reich’s Drumming as part of the 2010 sound festival.

Last year Burgess gave three “Big Bang” family concerts and performed music by Reich and G. Prokofiev with Powerplant. 2014 will see Currie give the Scottish Premiere of a specially commissioned work from Ralf Wallin. Meanwhile, Burgess joins forces with another of sound’s regulars, The Smith Quartet, for a programme that includes two Scottish premières: Starry Night by the late, great Steve Martland and a new work by Graham Fitkin, who along with Joby Burgess, has collaborated with sound since its beginnings. Other performers and ensembles making a welcome return to sound include the Scottish Ensemble who will give a concert including music by Arvo Part. Workshops and family events Participation, exploration and education are at the heart of sound. Among the opportunities to take part this year are a range of master classes, family and children’s events. The annual Go Compose!, an intensive composition course for young composers and creative musicians aged 14-19, will run in Woodend Barn. Budding composers will get the opportunity to work with professional composers Gareth Williams and Pippa Murphy and musicians from Red Note Ensemble. Soprano Juliet Fraser will lead masterclasses with students at Aberdeen University. Hands on children’s Indian drumming classes with Kuljit Bhamra will take place in Migvie Church and the Salmon Bothy, Portsoy. Soundlab invites musicians to come together to work on a new piece by Petra Vergunst, meanwhile Sonic Bothy will stage Play! The eighth Glasgow Americana Festival ended having hit all the right notes with Sturgill Simpson bringing the house and the festival down with a rousing set.

The seven gigs of the highest quality at five venues over five days attracted

almost 800 music lovers and three of them were sell-out shows.

The festival also featured Jimmy LaFave, Matt Andersen, Mary Gauthier, Carrie Elkin, Adam Holmes plus loads more.

“We set high standards and the response has been terrific,” said Kevin Morris, the Festival director.

“I’d like to thank everyone who supported the Festival this year as well as the artistes for making it so special.

“We have a growing reputation for providing an intimate experience and that’s put us firmly on the Scottish music festival map.

“It’s been an outstanding five days of music – now l’m looking forward to next year’s with plans already under way.”

BBC ALBA have been broadcasting daily programmes from this year’s Royal National Mòd in Inverness. Produced by BBC Gàidhlig and presented by Cathy MacDonald, the five programmes showcased the best of the festival from Monday 13 to Friday 17 October. These can now all be watched via the BBC's iPlayer. The Mòd, organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach, is the Gaelic community’s most prestigious festival celebrating cultural heritage, Gaelic language, music and arts. The run of shows includes live coverage of one of the most prestigious moments of the festival – Thursday’s Traditional Gold Medal Final for singing. The latest news and interviews will also be provided for viewers with news teams from An Là on BBC ALBA and Aithris na Maidne and Aithris an Fheasgair on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal reporting from across the festival.

The BBC ALBA Royal National Mòd programmes include: Episode 1: Cathy MacDonald presents highlights from the first day of the Children's Mod in Inverness, primarily for Gaelic learners. Amongst the performers will be the winners of the main singing competition for learners, the James C MacPhee Memorial Medal. This programme will be repeated on Radio nan Gàidheal the following day at midday. Episode 2: Songs, poetry and fun from the second day of the Children's Mod when native speakers are to the fore. Amongst the successful performers will be the winners of the main prize of the day, An Comunn Gàidhealach Silver Medal. Another chance to listen to this programme will be available when it repeats on Radio nan Gàidheal on Wednesday at midday. Episode 3: Cathy MacDonald presents highlights from Inverness with singers from the solo competitions throughout the day. Amongst the talented performers will be the winners of the Silver Pendant for adult learners. Episode 4: Live coverage of the traditional gold medal competition for singing from the Royal National Mod. Along with Cathy, providing analysis of the competition will be Gaelic

broadcaster Morag MacDonald and Skye singer Art Cormack. They will provide their own thoughts on the performances and also a reaction to the final result. Also featured on the show will be the winners of the prestigious Comunn Gàidhealach Gold Medals and the main winners from the rural choir competitions held earlier that day. Live coverage will also be simulcast on Radio nan Gàidheal. Episode 5: Coverage of the main choral winners of the day will feature from the final concert of the week. Amongst the choirs featured will be the winners of the Esme Smyth Trophy, the Mull and Iona Shield, the Margrat Duncan Memorial Trophy and the main prize of the day, the Lovat and Tullibardine Shield. Mòd 2014 programming will also cater for younger viewers with Megan MacLellan and Derek MacIntosh presenting BBC ALBA’s Dè a-nis which takes the audience on an exciting journey through Scotland's newest city along with performances from young singers and musicians. Stirling Tolbooth’s 2-Day multi-stage music festival returns, building on the past successes of the brilliant Reloaded Fest but taking a turn in a slightly different direction. Prepare for big hitters in alt, indie and electronic music. Prepare for a whole stage of math rock, prog and noise rock on the Friday. Prepare for that stage being taken over with hip hop, B-Boys and live graffiti on the Saturday.

Prepare for surprise unannounced acts in unusual spaces in the Tobooth building and a wealth of talented stripped-back and acoustic acts in the café/bar - In short, prepare for a whole host of glorious strange behaviours. ‘Strange Behaviours’ festival at the Tolbooth will take place over Friday 21 and Saturday 22 November. The festival will feature 30+ acts over the weekend, spread out over 3 stages each day. The festival marks the return of regular indie/alternative programming to the Tolbooth. For a number of years, Stephen Hume filled this role and brought through near enough every big name in emerging Scottish indie, rock and pop (Frightened Rabbit, Twin Atlantic, Twilight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Errors, Admiral Fallow, Broken Records, Fatherson, even Mogwai), and Stirling’s local music scene flourished. However since moving on from the venue in 2012, this side of the programming took a bit of a dip. Last month the Tolbooth's Music Development Officer, Kenny Bates brought through Honeyblood to kick off their tour at the venue with Algernon Doll in support, and the turnout demonstrated that the audience is

very much still alive in Stirling, with an appetite to match. It is therefore hoped that with its large and varied line-up, Strange Behaviours can help revive the local scene and once again give local music fans, bands and musicians a source for inspiration and aspiration to fuel them on, creating another great city of music in Scotland worthy of a scheduled stop for any touring act travelling through the country.

OCTOBER Glasgow Americana Festival Glasgow 1-5 October Glasgow's annual celebration of Americana brings musicians from as far afield as Texas and Canada to perform roots music from blues to rockabilly. www.glasgowamericana.com The Cumnock Tryst Cumnock 2-5 October A new music festival under the leadership of Scottish composer, James MacMillan CBE Cumnock, Scotland. It is hoped that The Cumnock Tryst will become an annual event with concerts in venues in and around the town. The programme will feature some of the finest, international classical artists, as well as music and musicians from different backgrounds both stylistically and socially.
