singing, peacefully, in protest of being taught entirely in the Afrikaans language. This was the language of the oppressor — of the white National Party regime that was responsible for apartheid. In 1976, these kids knew that Afrikaans was spoken only in South Africa. To get ahead in the bigger world, they needed English — and certainly wanted to be instructed in their native tongues. For this, and for reacting to police violence against their march, they were gunned down in their school uniforms. No precise death count is available, but some say nearly 200 died that day, and within a few weeks nearly 600 kids were shot by “police” in Soweto streets.
Because of this and other news stories in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Soweto gained an international reputation for violence, protest and ANC activity.
When I posted photos of our bike ride in Soweto on Facebook, I instantly got comments asking, “Is it safe?” “Are you sure you should be doing that?” “Not all places are safe for travel…”
In answer, no grand adventure is without some risk, but actually, we felt safe. Our bike guide greeted friends or relatives on nearly every street. Men on crutches and one with a bandaged stump of an arm wanted pictures with us. One student received an on-the-spot marriage proposal. Women selling food from roadside crates smiled broadly and said “hello” with melodious South African accents. One woman, paid by our bike guide, brought us a bowl of sealed baggies filled with Coca-Cola.
“Bite off a corner and have a drink.” Our guide
demonstrated and apologized, “They’re usually frozen,” but the cold sweet liquid needed no apology.
Residents of Soweto are working hard to change its image. It’s a vibrant place, with its own rhythm and culture. Our guide told us that 3-4 million souls live in Soweto, but only 17 of those have white skin.
The Soweto bike tour set the tone for the entire trip.
At the end of the trip, one of my students was asked, “When did you get it? Like, when did you understand South Africa, and the significance of where you were?”
“Right away,” was the answer. “As soon as we got on bikes and rode through Soweto.”
I’d call that cultural immersion before sundown. We fell in love with South Africa in one day.
We visited Langa, an impoverished township in Cape Town, where all shops and beauty salons were housed in shipping containers, because they were available and because they could be locked up tight at night. In Langa, we went into an apartment building where 80 families shared one toilet, three families shared each bedroom, but where four bright-faced preschoolers came running over to hug us. A few blocks away, we spent time in another set of three storage containers transformed into a preschool bubbling with color, hope and music. Forty little kids were crammed into a space that might serve 12 in the U.S. But their eager faces, snotty noses and all, lit up when they sang and
