MLB FUTURES ALL-STAR GAME
Seattle Mariners minor league SS Ketel Marte and RHP Edwin Diaz represented the World team in the 17th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, as part of All-Star weekend. Marte, 21, went 2-for-2 with 1 RBI playing second and batting leadoff for the World Team. Diaz, 21, allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 1 in 0.2 innings (3rd and 4th innings) for the
World squard. The Mariners have had 35 selections (including Marte and Diaz) to the Futures Game since its first began in 1999. Six players on the current 25-man roster (+DL) played in the Futures Game in the past: Robinson Cano (2003-04), Nelson Cruz (2005), Felix Hernandez (2004), Logan Morrison (2010), James Paxton (2011) and Taijuan Walker (2012-13). Brad Miller was selected to the 2013 U.S. Team, but was unable to play due to his promotion to the Major League squad. Cano (All-Star: 2006, 2010-14, Futures Game: 2003 & 2004), Cruz (All-Star: 2009, 2013-14, Futures Game: 2005) and Hernandez (All-Star: 2009, 2011-14; Futures Game: 2004) are each one of 120 players to have
competed in both the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League Clubs, selected the 25 players currently on each team. Each Major League organization is represented and players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to participate. The SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which is now in its 17th year, features the top Minor League prospects competing in a nine-inning contest as part of All-Star Sunday. The U.S. Team, which has won each of the last 5 contests, leads the all-time series, 10-6. All-Star Sunday is the first of three days of All-Star events at Great American Ball Park, culminating with the 86th All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 14th.
