Driving Safely While Aging Gracefully: March 20

Driving is a key to independence from the moment we receive our first driver’s license, and most of us

want to hold on to that key as long as possible. However, the effects of aging may impair your ability to drive safely.

The Minnetonka Police Department invites drivers of the age of 55, and their family members, to attend a special free seminar Saturday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Minnetonka Community Center, 14600 Minnetonka Blvd., Minnetonka. You’ll learn how the effects of the natural aging process may affect your driving ability, how to adjust your driving habits during the aging process, and how to evaluate when it may be time to hand over the keys.

Join the Minnetonka Police Department at this seminar, and help ensure the road to your golden years may still be driven by you! For more information or to register, call Minnetonka Senior Services at (952) 939-8393. 2

According to the Georgian calendar, March is the third month of the year. According to the early Roman calendar, it was the first month and was called Martius. The ancient Romans later made January 1 the beginning of the year, and March became the third month on the calendar. March has always had 31 days. Its name honors Mars, the Roman God of war.

Senior Chorale corner

From Jack Steinmetz, acting historian, Minnetonka Senior Chorale –

For 29 years, the Minnetonka Senior Chorale has gathered at the Minnetonka Community Center, operating without bylaws, elected officers or a treasurer. The members have no need of these, as we have but one mission – to sing and to make music. After a recordkeeping lapse of several years, this is an attempt to close the gap in the written history of the senior chorale.

As of this writing, the chorale has about 40 members with Roger Hoel as leader, teacher and inspiration. While we missed Roger at our first day of practice this year on September 9, 2009, we ad-libbed successfully – even without Gloria Bofferding, our able and wonderful accompanist, who also was unable to attend. In addition, Shirley Werness – an acquaintance of chorale member Phyllis Olson – read a history of the group.

Soon we will be halfway through our music season, with four gigs sung and eight more to go until May, when we enjoy another potluck lunch and wrap party as we put our music to rest for the summer. This will be our first year of not gathering with area chorale groups for a combined grand concert and rehearsal, but perhaps it will return next year. Hats off to a 2009-10 season of music and joy!

May we all find a way to perpetuate our strength and health through music and love. Look for more history in upcoming months, with bios of new members and other good stuff. Stay tuned! 2

Community volunteer connections

The purpose of life is not to be happy - but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make

some difference that you have lived at all. ~Leo RostenWould you like to become more involved with your

community? Did you hope to volunteer after you retired but are not sure where to begin? When we are working and raising our families we often don’t have time to volunteer but many of us hope to do so after we retire. Our Senior Board is exploring opportunities in Minnetonka both within our Senior Center and city and also schools and non-profits that serve our residents as well as others.

We are talking with ICA Foodshelf, St. David’s Child and Family Development Center, as well as the Minnetonka and Hopkins schools to explore how we might be of service. There are also opportunities within the Minnetonka Senior Center to help with lunches, mailings and special events. We would like to host an event to bring together potential volunteers with organizations who use volunteers in our community.

We would also like to establish a group for people who would like to volunteer on an as-needed basis. We are looking for a name for our group, ideas are welcome. Many skills can be used from picking up trash at parks, to developing marketing campaigns, acting as receptionist, driver, washing dishes, assisting in the classroom, etc.

If you are interested in working with this committee, have some ideas we should check out or want additional information, please contact Steve at (952) 939-8366 and he will get you in touch with our committee. Look for more details in coming months. 2
