MINISTRY JUBILEE TABLE OF CONTENTS

Vision StatementThe vision of the Detroit Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church is to create and nurture

dynamic and fruitful congregations who make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the

world.

As a conference, we commit ourselves to fulfi lling our vision through the accomplishment of the

following strategies and goals:

Dynamic and fruitful congregations will be fostered as we:

Create a culture where discipleship means more than membership*

Create and nurture congregations that are seeking and reaching persons of all ages, races and cultures*

Encourage the constant development and transformation of leaders, both clergy and laity*

Intentionally develop new congregations, new worship services, and new satellite locations for congregations*

Discipleship will be fostered through congregations who:

Change lives through effective, engaging and inviting worship*

Empower and equip people to call others into a new relationship with Christ*

Teach and model effective Christ-like service as a way of life*

Pray for healing and wholeness, both inward and beyond*

Encourage people to identify and respond to a call to a life of ministry and service*

Transformation will take place as we create and nurture congregations who strive to:

Identify and engage the needs of their communities*

Respond, both fi nancially and with service, to ministries beyond * the local church and throughout our United

Methodist connection

Work for justice so that all persons experience the peace of Christ*

Risk change to move forward in mission and ministry*

Sisters and brothers in Christ,

Jesus made it very clear in his way of living and teaching that his followers were to be

aware of and responsive to the needs of others. He goes so far as to declare that when

you and I connect with even the most disenfranchised members of society that we are

connecting to Christ himself. We are being formed as disciples of Jesus Christ as we

connect directly to the missional needs in our local communities, across our Detroit

Conference and globally through our United Methodist connection.

Ministry Jubilee is now over twelve years old. It allows you to guide your local church

into direct involvement in a variety of hands-on ministries across our conference. The

intent of Ministry Jubilee is to invite you and your local church leaders to prayerfully

identify specifi c ministries that you can then become informed and inspired about. Then

we invite you to get fully engaged in those ministries through your fi nancial gifts, your

faithful prayer support and possibly through direct volunteer involvement.

The projects have been examined by the sponsoring conference agencies, and 100% of

every dollar you give to that Ministry Jubilee Project will go to the designated ministry.

Any and all Jubilee Gifts designated as Agency Gifts will be directed to that agency to

make decisions about which projects need support. Any contributions made as Jubilee

Gifts will be directed by the Conference Leadership Team for current or emerging

ministries.

May you fi nd Christ more fully as you deepen your involvement in these ministries.

Networking, Organizing and Advocacy for Health (N.O.A.H.) grew from Detroit Central UMC by offering lunch twice

a week to people who were homeless in downtown Detroit. Realizing that much more was needed to be done to assist

people suffering from mental illnesses, substance abuse, lack of affordable housing, etc., the Bag Lunch program was

expanded into the N.O.A.H. Project in late 1999 through a collaborative effort with Family Service, Inc., a longstanding

counseling agency. While still providing lunch twice a week, we now offer clients a comprehensive array of services,

such as mental health, domestic violence and substance abuse counseling, physical health assessments, assistance

with transportation, clothing, prescriptions, phone calls, hygiene items, etc., including referrals to other area service

providers. With the help of over 65 Detroit area churches and civic groups, the N.O.A.H. Project, in 2010, served

The God’s Country Cooperative Parish, located in the eastern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, covers a 2,500

square mile area from Engadine to Paradise to Grand Marais, and encompasses McMillan, Germfask, Newberry and

Hulbert. Although located in some of the most beautiful country, the isolation, extremely harsh long winters, and

scarcity of jobs, bring real challenges to these churches and the communities they serve. Unlike our more densely

populated areas where you might fi nd another United Methodist Church within a few miles, these churches are

anywhere from 25 to 100 miles from sister churches. Yet these seven communities of faith combine their resources,

share their faith and through their active presence work to bring self-esteem, hope, and faith to all of God’s children

The Methodist Children’s Home Society (MCHS) has been providing care for Michigan’s children since 1917.

Annually, MCHS provides assistance to hundreds of children and families through its core programs. The residential

treatment program provides intensive treatment for 70 boys ages 6-17. Licensed foster care is furnished for children,

birth through age 17, who have been temporarily removed from their homes. Every attempt is made to reunite children

in our care with their birth families. Because this is not always an option, we identify adoptive families and place

children into loving, permanent homes. In 1992, MCHS developed BookPartners, an after-school mentoring program

in Jackson, where children receive individual attention from volunteer mentors who use an individualized approach

centered on the interests of the child. The success of this program led to the establishment of additional programs in

Shaftsburg and Howard City in 2004. MCHS is continuing to expand the number of mentoring programs. The Board of

Directors and staff are proud of the agency’s long tradition of caring for children in need, and we value our connection

to both the Detroit and West Michigan Conferences of The United Methodist Church.

Founded in 1906 as the “Methodist Old Folks Home,” United Methodist Retirement Communities was established

to provide a home for Methodist ministers and their wives. We now serve people of all faith at Chelsea Retirement

Community (CRC), with retired Methodist ministers and their spouses still an important part of our community.

Our Chelsea campus includes Towsley Village, a state-of-the-art facility for those with Alzheimer’s. Although care

at Towsley is more costly than elsewhere on campus, people can move to Towsley from anywhere at CRC without

having to fi nancially re-qualify. Providing a home for life is fundamental to our mission, but is also expensive. In 2010,

benevolent care costs were more than $1.3 million. No state or federal reimbursement is received for any portion of this

care. Without the generous support of people and churches, we could not continue to honor our Methodist founders’

commitment – we will care for all who live here, even if they outlive their savings.
