All mind maps have some things in common

• Colour• A central image• Structure that radiates from the centre• Curved lines• Symbols, words, images – using brain friendly rules• They mirror your brain’s natural way of doing things.

Neurons: Building Blocks of the Brain

• There are an estimated 150 – 200 billion neurons and their connections within the brain which transmit information through the brain by means of chemical signals called neurotransmitters.

• 100,000 – 1,000,000 chemical reactions take place every minute.

How do mind maps work?

• left and right brain• key words • colour and image• clearly marked labels and interconnections• association and creative thought• ‘deep learning’• power of your whole brain (Buzan 2003, The Speed Reading Book, ,BBC Worldwide Limited, London p.

147)

• integrated map of the intellectual territory (Buzan 2003, The Speed Reading Book, BBC Worldwide Limited, London p. 147)

Mind maps and learning

• 'Mind mapping is a strategy that can be used to encourage ‘deep’ rather than ‘surface’ learning (Biggs & Telfer 1987; Marton & Saljo 1976)

• Mind maps encourage higher order thinking skills

Master mind map

Track your research with a mind map – link it to your expanding body of knowledge

Keep it for your on going studyUse it as a tool for life long learningThe rewards will be great as you will

assimilate what you learn and it will become part of a body of knowledge which is truly your own.
