Die Fotografin begegnet der fremden Frau auf der Straße,

wieder und wieder. Sie spürt ihre Intensität. Irgendwann

fragt sie, ob sie sie fotografieren dürfe. Sie besucht sie zu

Hause und wird hineingezogen in ihre rituelle Welt – und

ihre Pein: die hasserfüllte Stimme einer jungen Frau, die sie

unaufhörlich anschreit: „Ich bin du, ich bin du, ich bin du!“

Aus der bizarren Beziehung zwischen Fotografin und fremder

Frau entstanden eine Buchidee und ein Dummy, komponiert

aus eigenen Bildern und Schnappschüssen vergangener

Zeiten, gebunden in der Technik des Altarfalzes, die es er-

laubt, die Seiten des rechten und linken Buchblocks beliebig

miteinander zu kombinieren. Das Projekt gewann den dies-

jährigen Dummy Award des 4. Internationalen Fotobuch-

Festivals in Kassel. Es überzeugte die Jury nicht nur wegen

der ebenso eloquent wie rätselhaft inszenierten Geschichte

dieser fremden Frau, sondern auch wegen der außergewöhn-

lichen Buchgestaltung. Die Fotografin heißt Milou Abel, die

fremde Frau bleibt namenlos.

The photographer meets the unknown woman on the street,

over and over again. She senses the woman’s intensity.

Eventually, the photographer asks her if it would be pos-

sible to take her photograph. When she visits her home, she

is drawn into a world of rituals – and torments: the voice of

a young woman full of hatred, who never stops screaming,

“I am you, I am you, I am you!” The weird encounter be-

tween the photographer and the strange woman gave rise

to a book concept and a dummy, composed of her own im-

ages and snapshots from past times, using a double gate

fold technique to allow the right and left-hand sides of the

book to be combined with each other at will. The project

won this year’s Dummy Award at the 4th International

Photobook Festival in Kassel. It convinced the jury not only

because of the eloquent and enigmatic rendering of the

story of this peculiar woman, but also because of the extra-

ordinary design of the book. The photographer’s name is

Milou Abel while the strange woman remains anonymous.

The Dummy Award of the 4th International Photobook Fes-

tival in Kassel covers the complete production of the book

by Seltmann+Söhne publishers, a presentation in European

Photography as well as material support from Blurb.
