4 Migrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array to a VNX Platform Using Celerra Replicator

Executive summary EMC’s new VNX™ series of midrange storage platforms features major new architectural innovations such as unified Fully Automated Storage Tiering (FAST), unified replication, unified management, and the new SAS back end. The point-to-point architecture of the SAS back end offers higher availability and better performance than older architectures such as Fibre Channel.

This white paper serves as a migration guide to help you move data from an EMC® midrange file-storage array (such as a Celerra® NS model) to a new VNX series storage platform. The paper provides simple step-by-step best practices that show you how to use Celerra Replicator™ (V2) software to perform a low/no-cost migration of data to your new VNX platform, so that you can start taking advantage of the new VNX technology as quickly as possible.

If you need to migrate data from one of EMC’s block-storage arrays (such as a CLARiiON® AX or CX™ model) refer to Migrating Data from an EMC CLARiiON Array to a VNX Platform Using SAN Copy.

Introduction To help ensure a smooth transition for customers who wish to migrate their data from older EMC midrange arrays to the powerful new VNX series platform, EMC supports a wide range of data migration tools and techniques. EMC recently performed numerous tests to pinpoint the most efficient way to use these tools to migrate data to a new VNX array. After careful testing, EMC concluded that the most effective way to migrate data from a block-based array (such as a CLARiiON AX or CX model) is to utilize EMC SAN Copy™, which is described in Migrating Data from an EMC CLARiiON Array to a VNX Platform Using SAN Copy.

On the other hand, our tests showed that when migrating from a file-based array (such as a Celerra NS model), the most effective tool is Celerra Replicator. The rest of this white paper provides a step-by-step procedure, including best practices, to help you make a smooth transition to your new VNX platform using Celerra Replicator and VNX Replicator. This procedure will cover the specific use case of migrating CIFS shares on Virtual Data Movers (VDMs). There are variations on the procedure if you are not using VDMs or if you are using NFS. NFS considerations are covered briefly at the end of the document.

Audience

This white paper is for customers who have purchased, or are considering purchasing, an EMC VNX series platform and wish to migrate their data from a previous generation EMC file-storage array to the new VNX series hardware. The paper also serves as a guide for EMC field services and customer service employees. Familiarity with Celerra Replicator is highly recommended.

5 Migrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array to a VNX Platform Using Celerra Replicator

Terminology Celerra Replicator: Celerra Replicator is licensed software that resides on the

Celerra array; you use this software to replicate file systems from one storage platform to another. Traditionally this software is chargeable; however, EMC provides this license free of charge for 180 days to customers who wish to migrate their data from a Celerra to a VNX platform.

Please note that you need be running Celerra Replicator (V2) and not the older version (V1) to perform the migration described in this paper.

Virtual Data Movers (VDM): A VDM is a software feature on the Celerra that allows an administrator to separate CIFS servers, replicate their CIFS environment, and move servers from Data Mover to Data Mover.

VNX Replicator: VNX Replicator is licensed software that resides on the VNX series platform. This software requires a license before you can enable it via Unisphere™. There is a free 180-day license available for users who wish to migrate file systems from a Celerra to the new VNX platform.

Using Celerra Replicator and VNX Replicator to migrate data from a Celerra to a VNX series platform This procedure shows you how to migrate Common Internet File System (CIFS) files in VDMs from a Celerra array to a VNX platform. Please note that this data migration procedure is for customers who wish to migrate from a Celerra who:

Are running DART operating system release 6.0 or later

Are running CIFS and have Virtual Data Movers enabled

Have less than 20 TB of data

Have 20 or fewer attached hosts

Are in the same domain and network as the target VNX to which you plan to migrate the data

If your Celerra does not meet these requirements, we strongly encourage you to engage Professional Services from EMC, or an EMC partner, to execute your data migration from your Celerra to a VNX.

The step-by-step procedure

As would be the case with any migration procedure, we highly recommend performing a full file system backup before undertaking any of the following steps.

Page 6: Migrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array to a VNX Platform ... · PDF fileMigrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array 4 to a VNX Platform Using Celerra Replicator Executive summary EMC’s

6 Migrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array to a VNX Platform Using Celerra Replicator

Step 1 Obtain and install a temporary Replicator license key

On your Celerra and VNX platform, click the Settings tab, and click Manage Licenses for File. Enable Replicator and SnapSure™, as shown in Figure 1. Log out of the GUI and log back in.

Figure 1. Enabling necessary licenses

Step 2 Create interfaces on the VNX platform

Next, you must configure interfaces on the VNX platform that will be used to present the file systems to the Windows servers that will be migrated onto the VNX. To configure the interfaces using the command line on the VNX Control Station type in this command:

server_ifconfig server_2 -create -Device <device> -name

<name> -protocol IP <interface IP> <subnet mask>

<broadcast>

Or, you can configure the interfaces in the VNX Unisphere GUI. To do this, select Settings > Network > Settings for File, click the Interfaces tab, and click Create at the bottom of the window that opens.

Step 3 Create interfaces for the Data Mover interconnects

Create interfaces on both the Celerra and the VNX. Replicator will use these interfaces for the DM-to-DM interconnects (paths) during replication.

To do this using the command line on the Celerra Control Station, type in this command:

server_ifconfig server_2 -create -Device <device> -name

<name> -protocol IP <interface IP> <subnet mask> <broadcast>

Or, you can do this in the Celerra Unisphere GUI by going to the System tab and clicking Create Network Interfaces on the left-hand panel.

Step 6 Replicate the file systems on the VDM that you wish to migrate to the VNX

When file systems are on VDMs, both the VDM and the file system(s) need to be replicated. Now that you have replicated the VDM, you need to replicate any file systems on the VDM that you wish to migrate to the VNX. First, you must open the Replication Wizard again to help you migrate the desired file system(s).

Select a Replication Type by selecting File System, then click Next as shown in Figure 25.

Now you need to:

Specify your destination array: This will be the same target VNX platform you selected when running the replication wizard for the VDM (as shown in Figure 10 on page 16), then click Next.

Select Data Mover Interconnects: Since you created Data Mover interconnects the last time we ran this wizard for the VDMs, the available interconnect(s) will appear in a list. Select the desired interconnect (as shown in Figure 18 on page 24), and then click Next.

Select the replication session’s interface: Accept the defaults of Any (as shown in Figure 19 on page 25) if this is the only replication session you plan to have running. If you have multiple sessions running, then it may prove beneficial to select a specific interface for this replication session. Click Next.

Select Source: Give the file system replication session a name, select the desired file system you wish to replicate from the drop-down list (as shown in Figure 27), then click Next.

Step 7 Verify the last synchronization time

Under the Replicas > Replications tab, highlight the session(s) you have created and click Properties to open the properties window; this window should show that last synchronization time is recent. If it is not recent, make sure that Update Policies is set to Time Out of Sync: 10 minutes or some other reasonable value, as shown in Figure 32. If the data has changed recently, the session should be keeping the replica synchronized every 10 minutes.

Figure 32. Verifying the last synchronization time

Step 8 Change the source file system to “Read Only”

Before you switch over the file system from the source Celerra to the destination VNX platform, you must change the source file system to Read Only mode. This step begins the brief period of data unavailability that ends when your file systems become fully synchronized and switched over to the VNX platform. You should not perform this step until you are ready to incur the brief outage associated with the switchover period.

Page 39: Migrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array to a VNX Platform ... · PDF fileMigrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array 4 to a VNX Platform Using Celerra Replicator Executive summary EMC’s

39 Migrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array to a VNX Platform Using Celerra Replicator

We recommend that you quiesce or otherwise shut down any application that is writing to the source file system from your host. To be certain that nothing is still writing to your source file system, unmap the file system, and change the file system properties to Read Only as described below.

In Unisphere on the Celerra array, go to Storage > File Systems and click the Mounts sub-tab. Select the file system mount that you are going to migrate and click Properties at the bottom of the window to open the Properties window. In the Properties window, select Read Only and click OK as shown in Figure 33.

40 Migrating Data from an EMC Celerra Array to a VNX Platform Using Celerra Replicator

Step 9 Create a server interface on the VNX

Before failing over your data from the Celerra to the VNX platform, you need to create an interface on the VNX platform that has the same name as the interface that is being used for the source Celerra server. If you are not sure of the name of the interface you need to create, you can try executing the switchover in step 10; the wizard will tell you the name of the interface that needs to be created if it does not already exist.

Bring up Unisphere on the VNX platform, select Settings > Settings for File, and from the interfaces tab, click Create. Create an interface and specify the same name as the name of your interface used for the source Celerra server.

Step 10 Using Unisphere on the Celerra, switch over the replicated VDMs

In Unisphere, select Replicas > Replications, select the VDM session(s) you want to switch over, and (with the session still highlighted) click Switchover, as shown in Figure 34. You will be asked to confirm the switchover. Click OK to confirm.

The status of the session will change to Switched Over, as shown in Figure 35.

Step 11 Using Unisphere on the Celerra, switch over the replicated file systems

Once you have switched over the VDMs, you need to switch over the file system sessions. Select the desired file system replication session(s) you wish to switch over, and click Switchover, as shown in Figure 36. Click OK to confirm the switchover.

The file systems should change to Switched Over as shown in Figure 37.

Step 12 Verify file systems are available

After the failover, if the DNS and NTP settings are configured properly, the file systems will still be accessible via the same host/share name. Although the underlying IP address has changed, it is transparent to any host that has the share mapped using its hostname. Alternatively, you may choose to remap your shares using the interface IP address created on the VNX platform. Ensure the file systems are mapped and accessible.

Step 13 Clean up replication sessions

After the migration is complete, delete the replication sessions from the Celerra and VNX platforms. This can be done under the Replicas tab in the Unisphere GUI on the source Celerra array, as shown in Figure 38.

Step 14 Back up file system data

On the VNX platform, this is a good time to make a full backup of the data in case the data becomes unavailable at a later time.

Considerations for copying NFS-accessed file systems File systems that are accessed by NFS may already be mounted in the VDM being copied by the methods given previously, and so those file systems will already be copied. Or they could be mounted separately within the Data Mover, in which case they need to be copied by a file-only replication session.

Various elements of the source NFS environment need to be reproduced on the target Data Mover, so that the NFS environment can be re-created. Since these NFS configuration pieces are not copied by the Replicator tool, they must be copied manually. The following items can be completed in the preparation stages of the migration:

The DNS configuration for UNIX domains, if separate from the Windows DNS used for Replicator

The NIS configuration, if it is configured on the source

The /.etc/passwd and /.etc/group files from the source Data Mover

Any Data Mover parameters that affect NFS or mixed usage of file systems, if they are non-default values on the source Data Mover. These might not only be nfs-facility parameters but also may include such cifs-facility parameters as acl.extacl (for mixed backup), acl.extendExtraGid, or acl.unixCheckAcl.

The /.etc/hosts and /.etc/netgroup files, if they were used on the source. These must be copied into files of a different name; otherwise you may get two hosts of the same name on different IP addresses.

When the file systems have been copied, you can switch over to the target system. In order for the NFS clients to mount files from the target Data Mover, you will need to:

Restore the names of /.etc/hosts and (if used) /.etc/netgroup on the target, and rename them on the source, so that the target takes the hostname

Re-create the NFS exports, as they were originally on the source. A script can be prepared for this earlier, using information gathered from a “server_export <movername> -l” console command on the source Data Mover

If there are clients that use NFS mounts by IP address instead of hostname, they will have to be addressed either individually, or if “automount” is used, by adjusting the automount tables.

Conclusion EMC recommends using EMC Celerra Replicator as the preferred tool for data from an EMC file-storage array (such as a Celerra NS) to one of EMC’s new VNX series platforms. This white paper provides simple step-by-step instructions on how to use Celerra Replicator and VNX Replicator to perform the migration. If you wish to migrate data from an EMC block-storage array (such as a CLARiiON AX or CX array), please refer to the white paper Migrating Data from an EMC CLARiiON Array to a VNX Platform Using SAN Copy.
