MIETTE VELDMAN n LORD BOTETOURT 2018 2019 Some people paint Some collect coins. Others enjoy photography. What did Miette Veldman do in her spare time in 2018-19? She played basketball. Veldman represented Lord Botetourt pretty well on the hardwood last winter. She scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds against Region 5D champion William Fleming … twice. She had 29 points and 25 rebounds in the Region 3D final against Magna Vista, leading the Cavaliers to the VHSL Class 3 semifinals against Spotswood and earning Timesland player of the year honors. That came on the heels of the 2017-18 season when she also was named Timesland player of the year after Lord Botetourt won the state title. Not bad for a hobby. Veldman’s trade is volleyball. The 5-foot-11 rising senior is a two-time Timesland player of the year as an outside hitter who powered Lord Botetourt to a 63-1 record and two Class 3 state champi- onships in the last two years. The turnaround from volleyball season to a long win- ter basketball schedule is a short one. Veldman has managed to take part in three state championships while earning four Timesland player of the year awards. Not a bad net result. — Robert Anderson VOLLEYBALL n VHSL Class 3 player of the year n Timesland player of the year n Led team to 32-1 record and state title n Had 510 kills with 20 in state final BASKETBALL n First-team VHSL Class 3 n Timesland player of the year n Averaged 18.5 points, 11.8 rebounds n Led team to 27-2 record and state semifinals MISCELLANEOUS n Committed to play volleyball at James Madison Sunday, June 30, 2019 The Roanoke Times 5 2018-2019 H All-Timesland
