This newsletter will provide you with up-to-date information about this important expansion of San Diego’s regional transit system. Project Working Group update The next meeting of the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project Working Group (PWG) is scheduled for Wednesday, December 2 at 3:30 p.m. The group will learn more about SANDAG and its roles and responsibilities, including regional transportation planning through the 2050 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). Additional comments will also be sought on the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project Public Involvement Plan. PWG meetings are held at SANDAG and are open to the public. Meetings also are broadcast live via the Internet at www.sandag.org. The link to the Web cast is posted on the SANDAG home page 15 minutes before the meeting. SuperLoop service a success Interim service for the SuperLoop, a local circulator transit service serving the North University City community, began in June 2009. Early ridership numbers have exceeded expectations. Daily weekday ridership is currently averaging more than 2,000 passengers. Ridership increased significantly when students at UCSD returned for the fall semester, with a one-day high of 4,111 passengers. The SuperLoop is designed for frequent service and quick trip times - improvements such as signal priority, queue jumper lanes and special road markers ensure that SuperLoop vehicles move smoothly through traffic. In 2010, SuperLoop service will expand from the current 9 stations to include 15 stations. The SuperLoop will connect to the future Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project and will help link residents and workers in the community to the regional transit system. Happenings in the Mid-Coast Corridor: UCSD Expansion As one of the key destinations in the Mid-Coast Corridor, providing additional connections to and from UCSD to the regional transit system via the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project is a high priority. UCSD currently has more than 29,000 students and continues to be in high demand. The university is continuing to grow and evolve. Twelve capital improvement projects are currently or will soon be in construction, and another 11 projects are in the planning and design phase for future development. These projects will serve UCSD’s growing needs for student housing and instructional space, and ensure that the university stays on the cutting edge of graduate and undergraduate education, patient care, and scientific research. What is the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project? The Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project will extend transit service from the Old Town Transit Center north to the University City community, serving major destinations including Westfield UTC, UCSD, and downtown San Diego.
