Club Mission It will be the mission of Jammers Volleyball Club to provide a competitive, high quality volleyball development program in the Durham area. Headquartered at Riverside High School, Jammers Volleyball Club welcomes all interested players, regardless of skill level or school affiliation...our only requirement is for you to have the desire to become a better volleyball player.

ObjectiveTo form Junior Jammers, Regional, Regional Plus, Regional Select, Semi-National and or National volleyball teams to enter into the 12s thru 18s age groups at CRVB divisions appropriate for successful competition.

• Jammers Volleyball Club is dedicated to its continued financial assistance through the Megan Hodge Scholarship Fund for players in need and possessing the desire to extend their participation in volleyball beyond the public or private school level.

• Jammers Volleyball Club is dedicated to training volleyball players with the understanding that club, or JO volleyball, is a competitive arena and demands more commitment than found at the middle school, high school and recreation league level. This is extremely important when making the decision to join a club, as there is a commitment of time, finances and of the player's mind, body and soul.

Officiating and Score Keeping Clinic JO players are required to officiate matches during tournaments. Due to this requirement, each player will be required to attend an Officiating Clinic. Jammers Volleyball Club will host a FREE Officiating Clinic at Riverside (date to be determined), for the sole purpose of providing Jammers Volleyball Club players with an opportunity to receive their certification locally and without cost to the players. Anyone NOT attending the club-sponsored clinic will need to make arrangements to attend another clinic, which will result in a $10 fee. More information on these clinics will be distributed as soon as it is available.

CoachesEach Jammers Volleyball Club team will have one Head Coach, with some teams being assigned an assistant coach. Jammers Volleyball Club will also utilize “Floating Coaches”, making them available for individual training and for assisting the head coaches during practices and tournaments. Our floating coaches are experienced, qualified current or former players who have the desire to teach the game and involve themselves with helping progress the sport and our club. They are skilled adult coaches that due to family or professional obligations cannot commit to a head coaching position, but will be working with teams and players of all ages.

All of our coaches receive a salary for their time and coaching efforts. Along with CRVB, Jammers Volleyball Club requires all of its coaches to be IMPACT certified, and actively promotes coaching education through USAV resources and with the incorporation of coaching seminars conducted by High Performance and collegiate coaches. All Jammers Volleyball Club coaches and adult members associated with Jammers Volleyball Club are required to submit and pass a background screening process prior to the start of each JO season.

Team Selections Each year during tryouts we consider every athlete as a prospective member of the Jammers Volleyball Club. Some athletes have extensive playing experience while others do not. Athletes go through a battery of tests related to the athletic requirements of a club player; we then assess their skill execution, as well as intrinsic traits.

We reassess each athlete in the Club every year. In addition, the staff is continually evaluating athletes we see, whether in our club or another, on a high school team, at camps, even in other sports events. Each athlete must come to the tryouts ready to compete for a place on a team, sometimes against teammates from Jammers Volleyball Club and sometimes against athletes new to the Club.

We base our player selections on many factors:a) Skill levelb) Specific athletic ability for volleyballc) Overall athletic potentiald)Work ethic/body languagee) Drive to performf)Willingness to be coachedg) Competitive attitudeh) Particular needs of a specific teami) Interaction with other players

Players should never assume that just because they were on a team one year they would automatically be on a team the following year.

We select athletes for teams because they show the ability or potential, in our opinion, to help those teams compete successfully at the appropriate level. (An athlete with a limiting physical or medical condition should talk to the Head Coach prior to the start of the tryout period.)

Teams are selected by the Head Coaches, and with the assistance of a panel of coaches, who review all available physical testing data; skills test results, and by observing the quality of play during tryouts. Athletes are strongly encouraged to attend ALL try-out sessions for their age group. Athletes who miss sessions will have fewer opportunities to showcase their skills.

What Jammers Volleyball Club expects from You As a player, you should be committed to attend regular practices and tournaments. Every player is expected to adhere to the USA Volleyball Participant Code of Conduct and in addition should exhibit good sportsmanship and support their teammates. Parents are expected to make certain their children arrive at their scheduled practice or tournament at the time specified by their coach.

Movement Between TeamsOn occasion, we will move an athlete from one team to another as needed to complete a roster. We will not move an athlete from or to another team until we discuss the move with the athlete and her parents. It is usually simply to fill a temporary need due to injury, illness, or scheduling conflicts. However, if Jammers Volleyball Club feels a player will be better served, and can benefit another team by filling a needed position, Jammers Volleyball Club reserves the right to place that player on another team at their discretion. In addition, if it becomes apparent that a player is not providing the needed skill level for that team, she may be placed on another team at or below the level of her original team.

Team Practices A practice schedule will be released as soon as teams are finalized, after we have and coaches have turned in their practice night requests. Practices will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons. Anticipated times for weeknight practices will be 6:00pm-8:00pm, 6:30pm-8:30pm, 7:00pm-9:00pm and 7:30pm-9:30pm. Sunday practices will begin at 1:00pm and may finish as late as 9:00pm. Sunday practices will be broken into 2 hour segments. A complete and defined schedule will be available once actual teams have been determined. Junior Jammer, Regional, Regional Plus and Regional Select teams will practice 2 nights a week. Semi-National and National Teams will practice 3 nights a week.

Current and Past Practice Locations

Riverside High School Carrington Middle School Triangle Day School Northern High School Trinity School of Durham Lucas Middle School

Jammers Volleyball Club will continue to seek additional practice facilities in order to provide the very best and most logistical friendly locations possible. Any parental assistance is appreciated.

All players will be required to wear Jammers Volleyball Club practice t-shirts to EVERY practice. Practice T’s are a part of the uniform package. Additional shirts may be purchased for a nominal fee on spirit wear site.

Scheduling ChangesIn the event of bad weather, a decision whether to cancel a practice will be made by Jammers Volleyball Club or DPS. Any facility not affiliated with DPS, will make a determination as to the availability of their gym when required. Jammers Volleyball Club coaches will not cancel a weather related practice without prior permission from the club’s administration.Tournament cancellations or postponements will be announced as early as possible. Tournament cancelations will come directly from CRVB via posting on their web site. Cancellations by Jammers Volleyball Club and/or RHS will be posted on the Jammers Volleyball Club website and coaches will be notified. If roads are hazardous in your area, please carefully consider whether to attend practice. Call your coach if you are uncertain as to whether there is a change. In the event that a coach cannot attend a scheduled practice, the coach will not be allowed to cancel practice without permission from the club’s administration. Every attempt will be made to locate a substitute coach as not to disrupt the regular training schedule of the team. There will be no dues refunded due to tournament cancellation from Region.

Practice ParticipationAbsences from practice will be determined as excused and unexcused. Excused absences will be defined as, but not limited to, illnesses, injuries, required attendance to official school events and certain family commitments. Unexcused absences will include, but not be limited to, forgetting about a scheduled practice, homework or school projects, test preparation and or conflicts with a second sport (unless approved by your coach). Jammers Volleyball Club understands the importance of academics and will not attempt to put athletics ahead of education, but it is necessary that the student-athlete understand the commitment she has made to the club and her teammates, making sure to allow appropriate time for academics and athletics. If a player foresees an absence from a scheduled practice, she must phone or email her coach 24 hours prior to the event. If there is a possible conflict with a scheduled tournament, the player must notify her coach at least 30 days in advance.

In fairness to the team for which your daughter has been selected, it is important that it is understood that volleyball is a team sport where the dynamics of the team are extremely important. Volleyball requires an established rotation of position players, each providing an element to the team’s design. If a player is absent from practices and tournaments, then it upsets the overall design of the team, and leaves the coach and remaining players trying to re-design something that works during the most crucial time of the season.

Quitting a TeamIf a player quits a team after the season has begun club fees will be prorated for the time they have been a member of the team (monthly proration November-January 50% of dues will be collected February-March 75% of dues will be collected, April 100% of dues will be collected). A 15% termination fee will also be charged in addition to the prorated amount charged. After a commitment letter has been signed by a player, Jammers Volleyball Club will not release a player to play with another club.

Outside Conflicts We expect Jammers Volleyball Club practices and tournaments for the most part to take priority over all other outside activities including other travel sports, band, drama, school trips, vacations, etc. Being in a community where many of our athletes are multiple sport athletes, we will attempt to be as flexible as possible provided the appropriate notice is given. Good communication between coaches and players or parents is vital. If you cannot attend a practice or tournament, you need to inform your coach as early as possible.

Dual Sport Athletes Jammers Volleyball Club is supportive of players who participate in other sports (high school or otherwise). It will be at the coach’s discretion, however, to consider such conflicts and the potential effect on the team at the time team selections are made. Players are requested to communicate with coaches prior to team selection regarding other sports and other activities that may cause potential conflicts. Coaches may choose not to select players because of commitments to winter or spring sports and are encouraged to ask all players about potential schedule conflicts. Once teams are selected, pressure from coaches for athletes to quit other activities will not be tolerated. For a club to field successful, competitive teams, that team demands a 100% commitment to attending ALL practices and tournaments. It is assumed that your daughter’s second sport coach will also demand 100% commitment to attending ALL practices and or games.

Playing Time Philosophy Jammers Volleyball Club has the philosophy that PLAYING TIME for all athletes is determined by the playing ability of the athlete, and IS LEFT TO THE DISCRETION OF HER COACH. In other words, PLAYING TIME ISSUES WILL NOT BE ISSUES. WE DO NOT GUARANTEE EQUAL PLAYING TIME ON ANY TEAM OR AT ANY EVENT. JAMMERS VOLLEYBALL CLUB WILL GUARANTEE THAT EVERY PLAYER WILL RECEIVE AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO EARN PLAYING TIME. During the season, if you are concerned with playing time, the athlete should first talk with the coach after practice or at a scheduled time. The appropriate attitude is for the athlete to ask the coach what she needs to do to get more opportunities to play in matches. Parents can best help their athlete by assisting their athlete with setting goals to achieve more opportunities to play. The amount of time any given athlete is on the court is the result of a complex determination, in that coach's opinion, of the athlete's ability, the athlete's potential, the team's needs at the moment, and the team's needs in the future. If an athlete does not feel comfortable speaking with the coach herself, her parents may be present. However, a coach will never speak to a parent regarding this issue without the athlete being present, and we prefer that all discussions take place in person rather through electronic means where many times tone is assumed and feelings cannot be conveyed.

The goal of participating in JO Volleyball is to train and improve the skills needed to compete at a higher level, whether it is at a middle or high school level, to seek a position on a more competitive club team, or even prepare for a college team. No one should consider club dues as monies paid to purchase playing time for your athlete. The paying of club dues is to provide your daughter with the opportunities to train and reach the above-mentioned opportunities. No one is paying for playing time, and Jammers Volleyball Club does not sell promises of playing time.

tournaments*Number of tournaments will be based on availability and timing the max number listed is not a guarantee. Tournaments may overlap thus shortening the number of events available to the team.

Travel ing to and from tournaments Each team for each tournament will decide on traveling to and from tournaments. Jammers Volleyball Club does not require to players carpool, or leave from an assigned location when traveling to tournaments. If staying overnight for a regional tournament, teams should try to stay together as it may assist in making sure everyone arrives at the venue on time. When carpooling, each player should leave and return in the same vehicle as to avoid any situations with players being left behind. If a player’s parents are not in attendance, Jammers Volleyball Club does advise players to notify their parents if any changes are being made in their travel arrangements. It is not advisable for players from different teams to travel together unless necessary because departure times and return home times can vary by several hours.

It is critical to remember your uniforms, team t-shirts, knee pads, court shoes, and lunch when preparing for a tournament. Many sites sell food, most often not nutritional, and occasionally no food is available. Past seasons have seen much success with a parent organized plan to bring food items such as sandwiches, bagels, fruits, chips, energy bars, sports drinks and plenty of water. Bring a water bottle for use during matches, and label it with your name or some other identifying mark. Remember to remove your trash from the bench after your match.

WE TRAVEL TO TOURNAMENTS TO COMPETE; everything else is secondary.Athletes may not leave the tournament area at any time without permission from their Coach or a team chaperone. Athletes must report any illness or injury to the coach and chaperone immediately. NO cell phones, iPods or other entertainment devices will be allowed on the bench, at the scorer’s table or while calling lines during a match.

Regional Tournament Procedures Carolina Region Junior Volleyball Tournaments are held on weekends from January to mid-May, and are played using a round-robin pool play format. Each team will play at least three matches, and possibly more depending on the tournament. Most, but not all tournaments use the pool play matches to determine seeding for elimination play, but the exact format varies both by tournament and age group. Events usually begin at 9 A.M. and may finish as late as 9 P.M. Tournament pools and schedules are generally posted on the Carolina Region website, www.CarolinaRegionvb.org.

Page 11: Microsoft Word - JVC 2013 file · Web viewPlayerand Parent Handbook. Jammers . Volleyball. Club. 15 . Stillhouse. Place. Durham, NC. 27704

10

Athletes are required to wear only Jammers Volleyball Club attire while attending tournaments. At no time will the wearing of school specific clothing be allowed while representing Jammers Volleyball Club.

On tournament days, players should arrive 1 hour before the first match and should be dressed for warm- ups at the court at least 45 minutes prior to a match. About 30 minutes before game time, the team should be warming up indoors wherever possible, and with a volleyball if space and tournament rules permit. During the day, each team should stay together and must inform their coach if needing to leave the site to obtain food. Be aware of the match schedules and when your team plays, referees, or rests. The schedule is available at the tournament site.

Teams finishing last in their pool are required to officiate the 1st match of the playoffs. Please do not leave any tournament until your coach has checked in with the tournament director and received permission to leave. Teams leaving without fulfilling their duties will be reported to the Region and a fine may be imposed on the club that will be passed along to the team.

Pool PlayTeams are typically grouped into pools of four or five teams. Each pool will play the teams within their pool, and normally on the same court throughout pool play. Teams not scheduled to play are required to supply officials (two referees, three scorers, and two line judges) or will enjoy a rest period. The rest periods should be used for meals and relaxation. In most tournaments, the top two teams in each pool will advance to the elimination round, or playoffs. In the case of any ties, teams may be required to play a tiebreak, to determine which team advances to the next round. Teams that do not advance to the elimination rounds may still be required to provide officials. Semifinals and finals are usually officiated by adult USA Volleyball Referees, one of which will be present throughout a tournament in order to supervise youth officials during pool play.

Out- of- Town / Out- of- State Tournaments When a team is traveling to a regional tournament that requires an overnight stay, or when traveling to Out-of-State tournaments, the following policies will be in effect:

• Absolutely NO member of the opposite sex is permitted in the player’s rooms• Players will act respectful whenever in the hotel lobby, dining area and hallways• Players will not disturb other hotel guests with loud or obnoxious behavior• After arriving at the hotel, players should not be out of their rooms after 10:00p.m.• Lights-out should be no later than 11:00pm or time designated by your coach. This includes the

television, computers or any other device that might keep you or your roommates awake.• When attending any club related event, you are representing Jammers Volleyball Club and we

expect you to act accordingly and show respect for your club, your teammates, your coach, your parents and everyone that made it possible for you to be competing today and participating in something you enjoy.

Any player(s) who fail to comply with the above stated travel policies may incur an immediate suspension of play, or be deemed ineligible for a future tournament requiring an overnight stay.

Out- of- State/National Tournaments For the 2017 season, Jammers Volleyball Club will ONLY handle hotel arrangements for team coaches. All accommodations for players and parents will be the responsibility of those individuals. Jammers Volleyball Club will make every effort to secure rooms for attending parents, but it will be the responsibility of the parent to contact the hotel and reserve their rooms. Many tournaments now have a STAY and PLAY policy in place. This means in order to participate in those national events, every team MUST book rooms in the designated hotels. Once a team’s attendance is confirmed for a multi-day tournament, information regarding area hotels for each tournament will be made available as soon as possible.

Club Dues Jammers Volleyball Club dues for the 2017 season vary with player age and level of competition. Jammers Volleyball Club dues include training, facility rental fees, equipment use, equipment upgrades, tournament registrations, insurance, coach’s salaries, coach’s CRVB registrations, coach’s travel costs and administrative costs. Other expenses such as personal travel expenses and food are the responsibility of each individual player.Once a player has accepted an offered position, that acceptance will be determined a binding contract with Jammers Volleyball Club, and a deposit will be due on the scheduled “signing day” for ALL team

members. Remaining balances will be divided into 2-5 equal payments and will be due on the 15th of each month.

(For the 2017 season, Jammers Volleyball Club will institute a 10% Sibling Discount. This adjustment will apply to club dues ONLY, not uniforms, bags or warm-ups.)

Payments for club dues can be delivered to Priscilla Awkard, mailed to Jammers Volleyball Club, 2912 Landing Falls Lane, Raleigh, NC 27616, or submitted via PayPal on our web site. Please do not give payments to your coach; it is not their responsibility to handle funds.

IMPORTANT: Any player not in good financial standing may not be allowed to participate in practices or tournaments until the issue is rectified. Any returning player not in good financial standing with the club will not be allowed to participate unless previous financial obligations are corrected.

Financial Commitment and Injuries For obvious reasons a player can be excused from Jammers Volleyball Club and the remainder of their obligation if the participant becomes disabled or so severely injured while playing or practicing with the Club that she cannot practice or compete for more than three (3) months (Disability). Upon notice of such cancellation, the Club may retain that portion of the fees or collect that portion of the indebtedness incurred by the Participant that is equal to the proportionate value of the services, use of facilities, equipment, registration, and travel fees the Participant has already received from the Club. Any player receiving uniform or equipment items prior to an injury withdrawal will be expected to remit those fees as well. The Participant must provide proof of a Disability by furnishing the Club with a written statement from a medical doctor certifying the Disability. The Participant will be readmitted to participation in the Club only with a written release from a medical doctor certifying her fitness to participate in Club activities.

There is an application process in which requests for financial assistance will determine eligibility. All information submitted in relation to the application will remain strictly confidential. Scholarship awards are for assisting to reduce Club Dues for individuals/families who demonstrate an existing financial hardship that would otherwise prevent a player from participating in our program. Understanding that participation in JO Volleyball is completely voluntary, and that there are less expensive playing options available, Jammers Volleyball Club will award scholarships based on not only the individual’s need, but also the club’s need up to $500 max. For the 2017 season, a strict limit to the amount of awards will be instituted and scholarships will be revoked if ANY terms of the scholarship agreement are violated (i.e. missed payments or delinquency)

All complaints will be investigated. Any staff member found to be in violation will be subject to discipline, which may include dismissal. There will NEVER be any retaliation against any complainants or any witnesses who participate in an investigation of said inappropriate behavior. Player/Parent Behavioral StandardsJammers Volleyball Club will not tolerate hostile, aggressive confrontations between a parent and any official, a parent and any coach, a parent and any athlete, or a parent and any other parent, regardless of whether the coach, athlete or other parent is a member of Jammers Volleyball Club or not. Violation of this policy may result in the athlete being dismissed from Jammers Volleyball Club.It is not appropriate for an athlete or a parent to complain to other Jammers Volleyball Club players or parents about a problem the athlete or parent is having with Jammers Volleyball Club, a coach, a teammate, or about disagreement with an administrative decision. The players will be the ones to suffer the consequences if there is any inappropriate behavior whether it is the behavior of the player or the behavior of their parents.

Player Punishment or Restrictions Jammers Volleyball Club does not condone or promote any type or form of punishment levied towards any player for issues concerning missed practice time, absence from tournaments, etc. However, there is a direct impact on a team’s chemistry and success when players are chronically absent from scheduled workouts and competitions. Therefore, a player missing multiple scheduled practice sessions may be subject to a reduced amount of playing time at an upcoming tournament.

Player DismissalAny athlete found in possession of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs or engaged in inappropriate or unlawful behavior at any point in time during the Jammers Volleyball Club season will be immediately suspended/removed from the program. In the event that a team is traveling, the athlete will be released to the custody of their parent(s) and, in the event the athlete is not accompanied by their parent(s) or legal guardian, they will be sent home at the expense of the parent(s) or guardian. This policy also includes any proof of inappropriate behavior that occurs at any point during the Jammers Volleyball Club season.

Social Media As the technology of electronic media has become more advanced and utilized by more people at younger ages, it has become a source of concern for the club and its attempt to ensure a positive experience throughout the season. As a result of the well-known and wide spread use of sending or posting negative or derogatory Text Messages, Tweets, FaceBook Posts, Instagram Posts or through any other social media source available, Jammers Volleyball Club will institute a NO TOLERANCE policy towards this issue. Any player or parent found to have sent or posted any comments, statements or opinions that are deemed to be inappropriate or negative in nature towards the club or any of its members or staff, will be subject to disciplinary action. As monitoring of this problem cannot be placed solely upon the club, it will be the responsibility of the parent(s) to police their daughter’s actions and use of these message delivery systems. This will also include any siblings, family members and friends etc., who choose to violate this policy on behalf of a current member of Jammers Volleyball Club.

Coach/Player/Parent Concerns Competitive team athletics, by its very nature, creates situations where everyone may not be happy all the time. For the psychological health of the athletes and the Club as a whole, if you have a valid concern that is unrelated to playing time, you should talk to your head coach. If you feel you cannot approach them with the matter, please feel free to speak to any member of the Board of Directors. Please be proactive in your

address of the situation because any comments that undermine the staff, other players on a team, or the Jammers Volleyball Club program may result in the dismissal of your daughter from the program. If you as a parent have legitimate concerns about a coach, you need to speak with the club Director or President. We will not discuss any issue involving a player with anyone OTHER than the player, her parents or her coach. Please note again that "coaching decisions" are not, in Jammers Volleyball Club’s opinion, subject to discussion. The practice of a parent talking about any player; other than their own, is highly frowned upon and will be considered detrimental to the team and the club.

Parent/Player/Coach ProtocolIn adherence to the philosophy of the Jammers Volleyball Club, we have outlined a schedule of protocol for the communication relationship between players, coaches and parents.

ANY MEETING BETWEEN A COACH-PLAYER-PARENT WILL NEED TO BE CONDUCTED IN THE PRESENCE OF JAMMERS VOLLEYBALL CLUB ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL, UNLESS PERMISSION TO EXCLUDE JAMMERS VOLLEYBALL CLUB ADMIN HAS BEEN OBTAINED PRIOR TO MEETING. THIS IS TO ENSURE DISCLOSURE AND PROVIDE PROTECTION FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED, THUS PREVENTING A HE-SAID/SHE-SAID SITUATION.

Coaches1. Coaches will be responsible for informing ALL players of practice times, practice lengths, tournament

times, arrival times, tournament duties and match specific issues.2. Coaches will maintain a level of communication between themselves, the players and their parents

relevant to the aforementioned items.3. Coaches will provide parents with information directly related to player development and/or player

expectations on an as needed, one-on-one basis.4. Coaches will not discuss any player issues with any parent other than the player’s own.

President – Director – Team/Coach Director

1. Issues concerning club policy.2. Issues related to coaching assignments, coaching decisions and/or questions concerning coaching

issues.3. Issues relevant to team assignments or player positioning.4. Any disciplinary issue between players, coaches and/or parents.5. Player/player, player/coach or coach/parent conflicts.6. Any questions regarding club finances.
