2009 ANNUAL REPORT

Message from the Executive Director

It isn’t often that being called a “fat cow” is a compliment—but in Southern Sudan it is the highest praise imaginable, for cattle are the most prized possession of any family. And a few months ago, that’s exactly what a rural Sudanese woman called Mercy Beyond Borders: “a fat cow whose milk feeds the whole village.” With this report on our 2nd year as an organization, we pass that praise on to you, the donors who literally raised from infancy this healthy cow which now nourishes so many Sudanese women and girls.

Calendar Year 2009 brought strong growth to Mercy Beyond Borders: despite the difficult economy here in the United States, we more than tripled our number of annual donors (from 253 to 873 in 36 States plus Canada and Ireland) and more than tripled our annual revenue (from $97,000 to $315,000). Above all, we expanded both the scope and the geographic reach of our projects in Sudan. All of this is such good news. You can feel very proud of what your participation in our mission is accomplishing. On behalf of our Board of Directors and Advisory Board—and of course all the women and girls with whom we are working in Sudan—I thank you and look forward to continuing this partnership with you in the years ahead.

Education: $40,800 • St Bakhita School, Narus• Loreto Girls High School, Rumbek• Kakuma Refugee Camp Girls’ Scholarships

Besides continuing its general funding for the 800 girls at St Bakhita School in Narus, MBB underwrote in-service Teacher Training for the faculty there, gifted the school with one Kindle eReader as a pilot project, and supported Sr. Kathleen Connolly’s year of teaching hygiene and sports to the upper classes.

The students in the newly-launched Loreto Girls High School in Rumbek benefitted from a gift by MBB to their bursary fund for incidentals such as medicines, sanitary supplies and other needs.

MBB began a partnership with New Scholars, Inc. by giving high school scholarships to two Sudanese girls from Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.

Maternal/Child Health Promotion: $20,600• Kuron Medical Clinic• Women’s Health & Hygiene Workshops

MBB strengthened its ties with the rural medical clinic at Kuron Peace Village, receiving a grant to begin a 2010 pre-Nursing internship there for 4 Sudanese young women. In the area surrounding Narus, Sr Kathleen Connolly conducted basic health workshops for village women, teaching women who’ve never had any formal schooling about the connection between hygiene and health: “Wash your hands. Boil your water. Cover your food.”

Women’s Economic Development: $4,800• Sudanese Women’s Voice for Peace• Bicycles for Women Project

2009 saw the completion of the Bicycles Project by the Sudanese Women’s Voice for Peace. Women in 10 villages received bikes to ease their travel and increase their safety when transporting goods to market. The recipients danced and sang when the bikes arrived: “We are not forgotten! Mercy Beyond Borders is our family now.”
