View of the Legands of the Autobahn field at 6:45a.m. Friday morning. There were over 300 BMW's in the show to celebrate BMW's one hundredfith anniversary year. We wished them a Happy Birthday and reminded them that we were thirty when they were hatched. There were 95 Mercedes-Benz and about fifty Audi's on the field
plus many others in the Corral . Legands has become the fourth largest car show during the Monterey Week.
Michael Cooper, Steve Ross, Brian Kruse and David and Murina Coomber departed on the morning of Aug 16
and headed North for Monterey , stopping in San Luis Obispo where they made camp for the night. The second
party, Bob Gunthorp and Gary Jarvis traveled the inland route stopping in Paso Robles. On Wednesday
afternoon everyone met up at the gate to the Presido in Monterey and checked into our lodging. Wednesday
evening Carol Ross and Diana Kruse arrived by air and we all settled in for the night in preperation for the fun to
begin Thursday morning in Carmel by the Sea when the Pebble Beach entrants arrive after their 17 mile drive.
This is a car persons narvina! There was exhaust smoke, the roar of enginers and the smell of gasoline, plus
beautiful exotic automobiles. Oh yeah

Bob Gunthorp and Steve Ross entered a Mercedes-Benz for judging and Michael Cooper, David Coomber, and Gray Jarvis had cars in the corral. Tim Pestotnik and
Packard Club member and friend of Mercedes-Benz joined us for the week of fun and cars. The judged Mercedes-Benz both came away winners. Bob Gunthorp second in class with his 200D Limo and S. Ross was a first place winner in class, for the second year.

while the MBCA Executive Director, dark, shirt khaki trousers looks on, Bob is standing to his right. Photo on right is the loaded limo approaching the Michelin man and trophy award ceremony.
Bob also entered the Concours d'LeMons. A bribe with Dutch beer was no help at all. This is an interesting
show with some truly unusual, unique and even weird automobiles on display. Don't think the bear helped either.

1938 Maybach SW38 Roadster by Spohn sold for $1,072,500 A slightly modified "Mommie" Wagon. Puts out 701 HP so you may get to the store and back quickly.
This 1960 220SE Cabriolet sold for $264,000 at Gooding auction. The Maybach styling design compared to a Mercedes-Benz of that era seems to me to be a dated styling. It looks more like a very early 30ies styling.

This 1933 Maybach belongs to Mercedes-Benz and was accompanied by the two gentleman, in the right of the photo, from Germany. While
looking over the car I noted that it was fitted with radial tires. Since there are many mixed opinions about using radials on vintage cars, I thought I would ask them what they thought. After they understood my question, they sort of gave me the look as to why I was asking. They said that is all they use in Germany and there are no problems as far as they are concerned.
Comparing the style of this 1933 does not show a lot of progress, to me. The last cars Maybach built were in 1940 and were purchased by Daimler-Benz in 1960.

There was a lot of laughing and giggling going on and ooohing and aaghing over the cars. August 20, 2017 is the date for next years Monterey adventure. One of my customers purchased a Mercedes coupe online and picked it up in LA. The seller told him that it had
been damaged in the past and it was repaired using the rear body parts (a rear clip) from another vehicle. My
customer looked the vehicle over without having the underside inspected. He could see by looking in the trunk
that the repairs had not been done correctly. In addition, the engine was running poorly and the differential was
noisy. He went ahead and bought it anyway because as he said “I got it real cheap”.
The first thing that he did was put five new tires on it. He then brought to me so that we could get the engine
running correctly, which we did. He also asked us to look at the body repairs that were done to the trunk floor.
We were only asked to look at the trunk floor and not the rest of the body for damage and repairs. He drove it
for a week and then wanted us to replace the noisy differential. Well, when we got the vehicle up in the air we
were able to inspect the body damage and repairs more closely. What we found at that time that was still
severe frame damage that was not repairable without replacing the complete body from under the front seats
back. The cost to do the repairs correctly was not economically feasible. He ended up selling it to me for less
that my first repair bill for getting it to run correctly. I think that in the end his “I got it real cheap” car cost
him over $ 5000. The moral to this story is that he saw all of the signs of a very bad buy but he was blinded by
the low price. He should have had it inspected by a professional. If he paid as much as $ 500 for a though
inspection that would have been less than 10% of that he lost in the end.

This is the Sixth Anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America and the Fifty Ninth Anniversary of the San
Diego Section. If these two events are not a reason for celebration then we do not know what is. The San Diego
Section is one of the oldest Sections in the MBCA. I think we are the number two or three earliest chartered
sections in MBCA.
We are going to celebrate these significant occasions with lunch it the Bluewater Boat House in Coronado, CA. The
boathouse was built in 1897 as the Boathouse for the Del Coronado Hotel and was converted into a restaurant
several years ago. We will meet up at the boathouse at 11:15 a.m. on November 6, 2016. There is free parking for
over 100 Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
There will be many unique door prizes awarded and a special treat for any new
member that joined us this year, and something special for anyone that has been a
member of the MBCA for over 10 years. This going to be a great party folks I kid you
not.
Here are the particulars. The menu starters, your choice of New England Clam
Chowder or Caesar salad. Entrée, Cheese Burger with all the trimmings and fries,
Tilapia topped with lemon caper sauce, seasoned veggies, and green rice. Fish and
Chips with Cole slaw and fries. Panko Shrimp, six large panko fried shrimp, with cole
slaw and fries. Desert Bread Pudding with vanilla ice cream or key Lime Pie. Coffee and ice tea are included.
All this for only $36.00 per person including tax and tip. There is no need to make your menu
selection now. You may do that when you are seated and have your refreshment.
What the program is at a glance; Send $36.00 per person to Steve Ross at 16151 Fruitvale
Road, Valley Center, California 92082.

Every car guys dream? Will maybe not very car guy. She isn't even using a
creeper. I also question the tool selection. Is this a Chevy?
Circa 1880, this early switchboard operator portable hardware weighed 6 pounds. Telephone operator was one of the high tech jobs open to women in that era. Men probably did not want to carry this rig around for 8 hours or more.

Presidents' Message
September is “Race Time” in San Diego ladies and gentleman. This month we will be going to the vintage automobile races on Coronado. (See info in this newsletter). If you have never been, I recommend that you go.
I would also like to thank all of the San Diego Section members that joined us in Monterey last month. What a wonderful time we had. As we wind up this 3rd quarter of the year, we look forward to finishing the year with elections, Wine tasting in Temecula with our friends in the Desert Stars Section and closing out with our annual Holiday party. This has been a very busy and event filled year. For those of you that have joined us at
these events…. Thank you and we hope you have enjoyed yourself. (Because we have really enjoyed meeting you this year and spending time with you) And for those of you that have yet to attend an event this year, it’s not too late. We hope to see you soon
Thank you for the support
