Our physical body has served its purpose, and it

is now time to return its elements to nature.

(Gen. 3:19, Eccles. 3:20, 12:7).

The Memorial Garden and Interior Columbarium

are open to all church members, former members

and their families. Former pastors of Valley View

United Methodist Church and their families are

also eligible. The Senior Pastor and the church

board may consider special friends of the

congregation.

The Agreement

Interment shall be officiated by Valley View

United Methodist Church clergy or a person

approved by the church clergy. The church shall

be responsible for preparing the site. Only the

ashes from cremation will be interred either in

the ground or in an interior niche. No markers,

flowers, or other symbols will be placed to mark

the location of a specific interment.

The ashes will be placed in the ground during a

Christian service. A permanent suitable common

marker has been placed on the church’s outside

wall bearing the name, date of birth, and date of

death of those whose ashes are buried in the

garden. Also, a permanent suitable common

marker will be placed on the faceplate of the niche

bearing the name, date of birth, and date of death

of those whose ashes are buried in the niche.

These names shall also be recorded in the church

office. Consistent with the concept of sacred

Throughout history the church has marked

our new birth by baptism and our entrance

into eternity by burial. The Columbarium

holds the names and the memories of those

that were dear to us. As a living-growing

memorial, it cycles the ongoing flow of life

and death. The Columbarium placed in the

mainstream of church life, is a witness

to the Christian concept of death and

resurrection.

When Christians desire to make decisions

about their burial or burials of loved ones

there are several options to consider. One

of the burial practices accepted by

Christians is cremation. This informational

pamphlet seeks to assist as you consider

this option at Valley View United

Methodist Church in Overland Park,

Kansas.

Cremation is the process of reducing the

human body to its basic elements. We have

been taught that God created us, gave us

the gift of life, and that our human body is

the temple in which God resides while we

are living. As such, our body is to be cared

for and honored. We have also been taught

that when our life on earth is over, God

gives us a spiritual body.
