The detection of a low number of bacteria - like Legionella - in drinking water is usually done with sterile membranes of mixed cellulose ester or cellulose nitrate with 0.45 µm pores and 47 mm diameter. As Legionella are lightly coloured, black membranes are preferred for easier visibility with higher contrast.

A high frequency of samples can be handled more efficiently by using sterile monitors with the required membrane type and a cellulose pad underneath. These monitors are connected to a manifold filtration unit by a small adapter. After the filtration step the funnel can be removed, thus the remaining lid and base fit to a Petri dish, which covers the membran and the absorptive pad. You just apply the microbiological media and incubate the dish. There is no transfer of the membrane to the Agar-plate needed. The monitors can easily be adapted to a manifold filter holder.

If Legionella have to be collected out of a large volume with a low concentration and be transferred for further investigation, the choice of a Polycarbonate membrane with 0.40 µm pore size is recommended. Due to its very smooth and shiny surface the bacteria can be removed much easier than from common membrane types. In addition Polycarbonate membranes enable a microscopic analysis directly on the membrane. For this issue a transparent version is available.
