Sylvan Lake Area Master Plan Public Workshop #1 July 22, 2019 and July 25, 2019, 5 to 7pm MST Custer Courthouse Annex The Outdoor Campus Meeting Notes Meeting Notes - Public Comments: Lake: • Save fishing - People tossing left over food in the lake. • Fish are getting caught in the shoreline weeds. • There are no more platforms for fishing, they are being used for other things, like sunbathing. • Don’t make store like Legion Lake, it’s too busy. • Parking lot drains into the lake. Trails: • Sunday Trail Gulch - notify people that they need to carry water! • ADA path to lake edge and store from parking lot. • North loop trail needs maintenance. • The far side of Lake Trail is too difficult for seniors. • Create loop trail at Little Devil’s Tower. • Need for trail maintenance - too many ruts. • Provide signage that indicates how technical/difficult a trail is. • Is there a website that shows all the trails? • Develop more family friendly green bicycle trails. • Link northern Custer State Park with Centennial Trail. Trail access needs to be improved •. Provide a 3% grade, loop trail • Make trail more difficult to Poet’s Table to discourage access • Erosion and high steps on some of the trails makes it difficult for those with small children and elderly folks to use. • General trail improvements are needed around the lake. • There are too many social trails. • Get rid of boardwalks around the lake trail, use something else like natural stone. • No problem with moving or constructing a new trailhead for Black Elk Peak trail either inside or outside of the park. • Off trail pedestrian use in areas logged for MPB are now enticing for people and somewhat denuding the area of vegetation creating erosion and rugged trails with exposed roots and rocks have appeal and may be the most sustainable on and water quality concerns. May need to consider temporary restrictions to allow vegetation to establish. • Undesignated trails from resort – may need to map them and understand them better and perhaps make some changes. • Create trail connections to Sylvan Lake from Mickelson and the City of Custer.
