What is Magic-5?

INFN: Bari, Cagliari/Sassari, Catania/Palermo, Lecce, Napoli, Pisa, Torino/AlessandriaUniversities: Bari, Genova, Lecce, Napoli, Palermo, Piemonte Orientale, Pisa, SassariHospitals: Alessandria, Bari, (Lecce), Livorno, Milano, Napoli, Palermo, Pisa, Sassari, Torino, Udine

• Development of software tools for medical applications:

o 2D-3D Image Analysis

o Computer Assisted Diagnosis (CAD)

• Grid virtual organization (distributed databases and code)

Magic-5 chronologyCALMA (Computer Assisted Library for Mammography)

Study of image analysis algorithms for computer assisted diagnosis in mammographicscreening. Development of an annotated mammographic database.

GP-CALMA (GRID Platform CALMA)

Implementation of a GRID prototype for accessing the database (e.g. for remote diagnosis, training, …. )

MAGIC-5Refinement of Mammographic (2D) image analysis algorithms

Extended development of the GRID-ware and the GUI. (GPCALMA VO)

Study of 3D image analysis algorithms and setting up of a distributed lung CT imagesdatabase. (VO ANPI)

Apply GRID facilities to PET image analysis for an early diagnosy of Alzheimer Desease

MAGIC-5 activity

The medical applications of the MAGIC-5 project cover at present three main fields:

1. breast cancer detection in mammograms

2. nodule detection in lung CT images

3. the diagnosis of the Alzheimer disease (AD)

…of course by using the GRID !

The GRID approachThe example of mammographic screening

4 mammograms (about 60 MB) per examIn Italy: 6.8 millions of women in the 49-69 age range1 exam / (2 years), gives 3.4 M scans per year, ≈ 200 TB/yearIn Europe: about 1 PB/year

Therefore…1. … we are facing with an intrinsically distributed database (hospitals) with…2. … a huge amount of data3. … which must reside in a secure environment4. … and have to be accessed interactively and remotely5. … in order to share common datasets for algorithm comparison and validation6. … with the possibility to use also a meta-data catalogue

AliEn ( http://alien.cern.ch )

PROOF ( http://root.cern.ch )

One of the future prospects of our project is the migration from AliEn to the EGEE/gLitemiddleware, which might become a European standard, in the case it will provide more

sophisticated tools with respect to the present AliEn functionality.

The basic functionality is available and testedPrototype based on:

AliEn for Data ManagementPROOF for interactive remote analysis

Data are analysed where taken Demos at SC2003, HG2004, IEEE2004

Status of GPCALMA

The near future:set up local CAD station in more hospitalsoperate it locallykeep improving the algorithm performancesmove to EGEE/gLite as Grid Service Provider? Yes, but we need:

single-VO mode & easy installation/configuration - run in hospitalsreliable Data Management and Storage Element Servicesaccess GRID Services from GUI application

Nodule detection in lung CT scansTwo initial steps have been already implemented:

1. automated extraction of the pulmonary parenchyma;

2. detection of nodule candidates based on a dot-enhancement filter

The case of the Alzheimer deseaseThe quantitative comparison, through the SPM (Statistical

Parametric Mapping) software, of PET images

from suspected AD patients with images of “normal” cases, allows powerful

suggestions to an early AD diagnosis.

The use of an integrated GRID environment for the

remote and distributedprocessing of the PET

images at a large scale, is strongly desirable.

This application is now being implemented in the MAGIC-5

GRID infrastructure.

Summary …The AliEn server managing the VO services has been installed and configured. Moreover

some AlEn clients already in use.

The remote analysis of mammographic images successfully works, thanks to the PROOF facilities.

All blocks required for the tele-diagnosis and screening use cases are integrated into a working prototype system

Migration from AliEn to the EGEE/gLite middelware, which might become a European standard, in the case it will provide more sophisticated tools with respect to the present AliEn functionality.

Further improvements of the mammographic CAD are under study, showing promising results

New algorithms are being successfully developed in lung CT image analysis for early nodule detection

A new VO is now being implemented in order to manage the PET image analysis for an early AD diagnosis
