SEASON OUTLOOK

To win the national championship, a team needs talent, ex-perience, depth and leadership. Th e 2006-07 UCLA men’s golf team has all of these ingredients in abundance. Credit

fi fth-year Head Coach O.D. Vincent’s vision and diligence in building the UCLA program into one of the nation’s elite and for accomplish-ing many milestones that eluded his predecessors. Under Vincent’s tutelage in the past four-plus seasons, the Bruins have learned how to win, capturing 32 team titles, a national leader, including 11 last season. Included in that victory total are two Pac-10 titles and a pair of NCAA Regional Championships. After earning four straight NCAA Championship berths, the Bruins have fi nished among the Top 10 three times, twice in the Top 3. Vincent has instilled in his players the confi dence needed to win. Eleven Bruins have won 14 individual titles, including a pair of Pac-10 medalists and two NCAA Regional winners. In addition, six players have earned All-America honors on Vincent’s UCLA watch, and 10 have been selected to the all-conference team.Th e players in Vincent’s system gain experience by playing as much as possible. Last year’s lineup that represented UCLA in the NCAA Championship featured one junior, two sophomores and two fresh-men. Th ose players combined for 304 rounds of college golf before the championship began and that fi vesome tied for seventh nationally. Th e Bruins are deep, too. Among their 11 team victories last season, they won six Gold events. In addition, every returning player on this year’s roster boasts at least 30 rounds of collegiate experience.Poised to contend for the 2007 national title, the Bruins are prepared and motivated. Th e competition to earn one of the fi ve spots on the NCAA travel squad is fi erce, similar to the battle for the NCAA team title.Following are capsule summaries on the Bruins’ personnel:

THE SENIORSTh ree-year lettermen Peter Campbell and Chris Heintz each enter their fi nal seasons with more than 85 rounds of experience and at least one collegiate individual title to his credit.Campbell has won twice in his career, capturing the Carson Daly Invitational as a freshman and the Gold Rush title as a sophomore. In his career, he boasts a 75% counter ratio, 12 Top 20 fi nishes and 18 rounds under par.“Peter enjoyed a good outing at the Husky Invitational and that gave him confi dence entering his senior year,” said Vincent. “He is a long hitter, who uses his power to his advantage. He’s a player who’s waiting to pop.”In September, Campbell tied for fi fth at the Husky Invitational, his eighth career Top 10 fi nish. It was his best fi nish since February when he recorded a runner-up fi nish.Heintz, elected team captain this season, has played more rounds (106) and made more starts (36) than any player on the team. Last season he won the Braveheart Classic with a seven-under par total of 209 (69-70-70) at Oak Valley. He also earned 2nd Team All-Pac-10 honors and was selected to the GCAA Scholar All-America Team.“Chris is a very consistent player. He hits so many greens and fairways,” said Vincent. “He’s a great driver of the ball.”Heintz’s leadership will be essential in the post-season. He boasts 22 rounds of Pac-10 and NCAA experience, including seven rounds of NCAA Championship experience. Last season he tied for sixth at the Pac-10 Championship, a career best.

THE JUNIORSUCLA’s juniors — Kevin Chappell, Daniel Im and Craig Leslie — have each won a tournament and fi gure to contribute signifi cantly this season.Chappell served notice last season by winning the NCAA East Re-gional at Lake Nona in Florida with scores of 70-73-68—211 (-5). His victory helped the Bruins qualify for the NCAA Championship and earned him Honorable Mention All-America honors. He enters his junior seson with 75 rounds of experience, including 14 rounds of post-season play.“Kevin had a great summer and played well in several top events,” said the head coach. “Th e strength of his game is his ball-striking ability and shot-making.” Over the summer, Chappell tied for fi fth at the British Amateur at Royal St. George’s, tied for third at the Pacifi c Coast Amateur and won a U.S. Amateur qualifi er at King’s Country Club near his hometown.Im became UCLA’s sixth Pac-10 champion last season while leading the Bruins to the fi fth conference title in program history. He earned GCAA All-America Honorable Mention honors and 1st Team All-Pac-10 acclaim. Despite fewer starts, he also improved his production. He increased his total of scores under par by two-thirds and his Top

10 fi nishes by 50%.“Daniel’s talent speaks for itself,” complemented Vincent. “He is a great fi ghter on the golf course and possesses an outstanding short game. When he’s focused, he’s tough to beat.”Over the summer, Im advanced to the quarterfi nals of the U.S. Ama-teur Publinks at Gold Mountain, tied for fourth at the Scratch Players Amateur and recorded two other Top 20 fi nishes. In September, he was named by GolfWeek as one of 50 Players to Watch.UCLA’s third junior, Craig Leslie, won his fi rst collegiate title at the Pala Mesa Invitational with scores of 68-71-71—210 (-6). Last season, he also recorded two runnerup fi nishes and improved his scoring average by more than half a stroke. “Craig is extremely determined to establish himself this season,” re-marked Vincent. “He has matured as a player and now understands his game better.”Over the summer he recorded two Top 10 fi nishes, and fi red a 65 in the fi nal round of the Rosauers Open to place seventh. He began the Fall season by tying for fi fth at the Husky Invitational.

THE SOPHOMORESTh e Bruins’ three sophomores — Erik Flores, James Lee and Lucas Lee — each conributed diff erently to the success of last year’s team.Flores earned 2nd Team GCAA All-America honors on the strength of four second place fi nishes and a team-leading 72.1 scoring average. A fi nal round 69 at the NCAA Championship enabled him tie for 27th individually, the highest fi nish of any player on the team. He also led the team with 10 rounds in the 60s and seven Top 10 fi nishes.“Erik enjoyed a tremendous freshman year,” Vincent commented. “He is a player with high expectations for himself and we look for him to become a much more consistent player.”Flores last season also earned Freshman of the Year acclaim from the Pac-10 and GCAA All-Freshman Team honors. On the strength of tying for 21st at the Pac-10 Championship, James Lee earned a trip to the NCAAs last season. He made the most of the opportunity by posting four scores that counted and tying for 32nd individually, second to Flores. During the season, he recorded two Top 10 fi nishes in 10 starts and posted six rounds under par.“James Lee has one of the best golf swings I’ve ever seen,” said the head coach. “He’s a very accurate driver of the ball; he hits almost evey fairway.”During the summer, he recorded a pair of Top 25 fi nishes and played the fi rst 54 holes of the Players Amateur in 11-under par.Lucas Lee won twice as a freshman and earned All-Pac-10 Honor-able Mention honors. His scoring average of 73,3 ranked third on the team. He also recorded 12 rounds under par, a total that tied for third on the team.“Lucas Lee is a very steady player, who improved his putting tremen-dously over the summer,” Vincent remarkd. “He’s had a great start this season.”In four starts and 12 rounds in the Fall, he improved his scoring average more than one stroke per round and led the team at 72.0 with four rounds under par and three rounds in the 60s.

THE FRESHMENTh e Bruins welcomed two freshmen to the program this Fall and Vincent expects both of them to contribute signifi cantly during their college careers.Fresno native Charlie Harris (Sunnyside HS) earned seven varsity

letters in golf (4) and water polo (3). He earned all-league honors in both sports, including team MVP honors as a goalie in water polo. In golf, he recorded two Top 20 fi nishes in three starts at the U.S. Junior Amateur over the past three years.“Charlie Harris is a very good athlete,” said Vincent. “In golf, he has tremendous potential and he’s learning how to play better and what it takes to be a part of this program.”Over the summer, Jason Kang qualifi ed for the U.S. Amateur at Cypress Ridege with a 36-hole score of 138, fi nishing second. At Th e Amateur, he tied for 37th in stroke play with scores of 74-72—146 (+3). He also qualifi ed locally for the U.S. Open. His junior golf resume included fi ve Top 20 fi nishes in six starts in 2005, highlighted by a pair of Top 10 fi nishes. He was named to the 2005 Rolex All-America Team.“Jason Kang possesses a great work ethic and he will really improve as the season progresses,” Vincent commented. “He’s a long hitter with a lot of power. He’s a hard worker with high expectations for himself.”

OVERALL OUTLOOKVincent feels that this is one of the best teams he’s ever coached, and that the competition for spots on the travel roster for Gold events will be fi erce. However, there is much room for improvement and the coaching staff must choose the right personnel in time for NCAA Championship.“As usually is the case, we will need to become more effi cient around the greens,” he explained. “We must learn to value each shot, stay prepared and fi ght for every birdie and par. All we can ask is to have a chance to win every tournament.”

Lucas Lee won twice as a freshman last season.

THE COACHING STAFF

In four seasons, O.D. Vincent has elevated the UCLA men’s golf program to elite status among the nation’s best teams.

Since 2002 (and prior to the 2006-07 season) the Bruins have recorded three Top 10 NCAA fi nishes, won two NCAA West Regional titles, a pair of conference championships and a total of 30 tournament titles. Additoinally, 11 players have won 14 individual tournament crowns during his UCLA coaching tenure.Last season, the Bruins won 11 team titles, including their second conference crown under Vincent, and barely missed setting a school re-cord for victories in a season. Five new players won six individual titles, three players earned All-America honors, three were selected to the All-Pacifi c Region team and four earned all-conference honors. In addition, junior Chris Heintz was voted to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team for the second straight year, and became a fi rst-time selection to the GCAA Scholar All-America Team.In 2006, Vincent earned his third Pac-10 Coach of the Year award and his second as coach of the Bruins. The past two September editions of Golf Digest proclaimed UCLA the nation’s “Best Balanced” program in a survey ranking more than 1,000 schools’ academics, facilities, coaching, climate and golf. In a short period of time, Vincent has singlehandedly upgraded UCLA’s golf practice facilities, fundraising efforts, recruiting and results. Most importantly, the Bruins are once again considered one of the nation’s top col-legiate programs. In 2004-05, the Bruins won three team titles, including the inaugural Gold Rush hosted by UCLA at the SCPGA facility in Calimesa. The

Bruins also won The Prestige for the second straight year and tied for fi rst at the Cougar Invitational, a Blue Team event.Freshman Daniel Im won the Southern High-lands Collegiate, fi ring a fi nal round 68 and defeating several outstanding players. Im and fellow frosh Kevin Chappell each earned All-Pac-10 honors. Overall, six players — Chappell, Im, Erik Flores, Steve Conway, Travis Johnson, John Merrick and Roy Moon — have earned All-America honors during Vincent’s reign. Merrick won the 2003 Pac-10 title, Im captured the 2006 conference crown, Chappell won the 2006 NCAA East Regional championship, Johnson won the 2004 NCAA West Regional title and the Bruins have produced seven other individual champions since the beginning of Vincent’s tenure. In 2003 and 2004, Johnson earned GCAA Scholar All-America honors.Three years ago, the Bruins won nine tourna-ments, including six Gold events. The year before they won seven times, including their fi rst Pac-10 title in 18 years and their fi rst-ever NCAA Regional crown. The Bruins also fi nished the 2003-04 season ranked No.1 by GolfStat for the fi rst time in their intercollegiate golf history.Fueled by the return of four veteran players, Vincent guided the Bruins to a record-setting victory in his UCLA coaching debut four years ago. They won the Pacifi c Invitational by 16 shots, and set a 54-hole school scoring record of 34-under par. At the end of that season, the Bruins’ seven tournament victories led the nation. Conway won a pair of individual titles, and Merrick won the 2003 Pac-10 individual title. Merrick’s

Th e Bruins have qualifi ed for 18 of the last 29 NCAA Championships. In 1988, the Bruins captured their fi rst NCAA golf title. Below is a list of UCLA’s year-by-year fi nishes since 1947.

1988 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP SUMMARY

In 1988, the Bruins won their fi rst and only NCAA golf team championship at North Ranch Country Club in Th ousand Oaks, CA. On the fi nal day of the tourna-ment, UCLA, 13 shots behind the leader, rallied for one of the great comebacks in NCAA golf history. Th e Bruins shot a one-under par 287 over the fi nal 18 holes to win the national champi-onship by three shots over Texas-El Paso. Th e Bruins’ Brandt Jobe fi red a fi nal round three-under par 69 to record a one-under par 72-hole score of 287 and fi nish in a tie for second place. Jobe’s fi nish was the best individual fi nish ever by a UCLA golfer in the NCAA Championship. Although no other Bruin fi nished among the Top 20, clutch performances, especially on the fi nal day, produced one of the most memorable championship moments in UCLA history. Below are the scores from the 1988 NCAA Championships.1988 Team score: 1,176. Individuals: Brandt Jobe, 2nd tie (72-73-73-69 — 287); Bobby Lasken, 26th tie (74-71-75-75 — 295); Tim Cruikshank, 31st (79-73-73-71 — 296); Kevin Leach, 43rd (76-78-72-72 — 298); Rich Greenwood, 85th (82-79-77-77 — 315).

FRIENDS OF GOLF

Th e Friends of Golf (FOG) organization has been a fi xture of fi nancial support for the UCLA golf program and collegiate and youth golf nationwide for the last three decades. Th e origins of this group come from former UCLA head golf coach Eddie Merrins, who served as Bel Air’s head professional for nearly 40 years. Under his active leadership, the UCLA golf program has developed into one of the most successful in the country. To implement that program, Merrins pioneered the FOG organization to aid in fundraising activities for college and youth golf programs. FOG was incorporated in 1981 as a non-profi t organization and has drawn enthu-siasm from many prominent professionals in the business and sports communities. Th e annual FOG event is highlighted by an elaborate golf tournament and dinner held at Bel Air Country Club. Luminaries such as Dinah Shore, Digger Phelps, Rick Pitino, David Wolper and Richard Crenna distinguished the tournament in 1991. Highlighting the 10th annual tournament was the legendary Jack Nicklaus. Each year, FOG honors a member of the PGA Tour, which has enabled Friends of Golf to endow the Golf Scholarship Fund at UCLA. Legendary golfer Byron Nelson calls the annual FOG event, “Th e best one-day golf tournament in the country.” At right is a list of the past honorees:

KEY ADMINISTRATORS

DAN GUERREROATHLETIC DIRECTOR • UCLA ’74 • 5TH YEAR

GLENN TOTHSENIOR ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR • UCLA ’76 • 30TH YEAR

In four years as UCLA’s Director of Athletics, Daniel G. Guerrero has presided over 13 NCAA team titles and 28 conference championships, and has the program poised to reach the century mark in 2006-07. A former Bruin baseball player, Guerrero exudes the pride of a student-athlete who is now calling the shots at his alma mater. Declaring his current position his dream job, his goal is to help each sport at UCLA maximize its potential and contend for a national championship.

Guerrero is serving his second year as a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and “Th e College Basketball Partnership,” a group that includes many of the most infl uential people in the sport. Last year, UCLA won NCAA team championships in men’s volleyball and women’s water polo while seven teams fi nished among the Top 10 in their championship races. In 2004-05, UCLA won three NCAA team championships — men’s and women’s water polo and men’s tennis. Overall, UCLA leads the nation with 99 NCAA team titles. In 2002-03, Guerrero earned numerous honors, including: 2002 UCLA Latino Alumnus of the Year (October); 2003 Cal State University Dominguez Hills Alumnus of the Year (March); and 2003 “Father of the Year” by the Father’s Day Council of the American Diabetes Assn. (June). He also became the fi rst athlete in any sport at Banning High School to have his jersey (No. 8 in baseball) retired, and on Sept. 10, 2002, the Los Angeles City Council honored him with Dan Guerrero Day. In addition, the May 5, 2003 issue of Sports Illustrated listed him No. 28 among the 101 Most Infl uential Minorities in Sports. He was one of 28 people whose photo was on that issue’s cover. He also served as a member of the NCAA Baseball Committee during the 2002-2003 year. Guerrero came to UCLA from UC Irvine, where he had served as UCI’s fi fth permanent Director of Athletics since December 17, 1992. Guerrero, 54, received his Bachelor’s degree from UCLA in 1974 and played second base for the Bruins for four years. He is married to the former Anne Marie Aniello and they have two daughters: Jenna (24) and Katie (20).

Glenn Toth, who begins his 30th year of service to the athletic department, enters his ninth year in charge of both the golf and tennis programs. Last year, all four teams fi nished in the top 12 nationally. A senior associate athletic director with a variety of administra-tive duties, Toth is responsible for the department’s association with adidas, and was the architect of the original 1998 contract with the shoe and apparel conglomerate and the 2004 extension. Previously the

department’s corporate relations director, Toth played the key role in researching and soliciting UCLA’s new sports marketing partner, ISP, which now manages the relationship with television, radio, the department website, the game program publisher, and corporate relations. Selected trade relationships are still handled by Toth. Toth also has administrative responsibility for the athletic equipment room, which designs, outfi ts and maintains all of the Bruins’ uniforms, practice and playing equipment. In addition, the athletic training room/sports medicine area, which provides injury treatment, rehabilitation, and therapy services to more than 700 student-athletes, falls under Toth’s supervision as does the intercollegiate weight room and strength coaches. Toth graduated from UCLA in 1976 with a degree in economics. He was hired after gradu-ation to work in the events and travel offi ce. From 1978-84, he supervised the management of athletic events and managed football and basketball team travel. In 1982, UCLA football made its move to the Rose Bowl, creating a need for the athletic department’s fi rst Marketing Director, a title and function added to Toth’s Assistant Athletic Director status. Promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 1984, he was credited with several award-winning football marketing campaigns. In 1992, he was given duty as the department’s director of corporate relations. A lifelong golfer, Toth lettered in golf at Tustin’s Foothill High School. He enjoys scuba diving, hiking and home repair in his spare time. He also serves as a reserve deputy for the L.A. County Sheriff ’s Department, performing both patrol and diving duties.
