The NCAA recently announced rules violations at Stanford involving their softball team exceeding daily practice hours on numerous occasions, and also for two boosters providing impermissible extra benefits to a football player. The two Stanford boosters provided the football player with nearly $3,500 of extra benefits, including an impermissible loan to purchase a bicycle, free use of a vehicle, meals and the use of a vacation home. This football student-athlete lived with a booster as part of a short-term housing program during the summer months, which allowed the booster the opportunity to provide many of these impermissible benefits. The player was given a one-game suspension and the housing program was discontinued by the university because of the risks involved. By definition, Wooden Athletic Fund members are boosters. Once identified as a booster, that status remains forever and NCAA rules will always apply to you. NCAA rules are clear that you MAY NOT provide gifts, money, loans, transportation, housing, restaurant meals, groceries, discounted or free services or any other extra benefit to a current UCLA student-athlete or prospec- tive student-athlete or their relatives or friends. What is “Institutional Control?” When college athletic programs make headlines for NCAA rules violations, a lack of institutional control is often cited when significant penalties are involved. The NCAA Constitution provides that UCLA must: • Control its intercollegiate athletic program in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations; • Monitor its program, including identifying and reporting to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and take corrective actions; and • Insure that coaches, student-athletes, university staff and others representing UCLA’s athletic interests share responsibility for complying with NCAA rules. As an NCAA member, UCLA is responsible for the actions of its alumni and supporters. As you may know, UCLA Athletics recently announced NCAA extra benefits violations involving a member of the football coaching staff. At the time the violations were discovered, UCLA moved swiftly with self-imposed sanctions, including suspension and a fine to the coach, reduced recruiting days, and repayment of those benefits by the student-athletes involved. Due to well-established monitoring systems in place and the honesty and cooperation of all UCLA staff throughout the review, the NCAA did not penalize UCLA with a finding of lack of institutional control, something we can be proud of. As loyal Bruin supporters and fans, what is your role? Simply, please keep NCAA rules compliance in mind, ask before acting, and “don’t let it happen here!” For questions on NCAA rules, feel free to contact Dan Goldberg, Assistant Athletic Director Compliance at (310) 794-8813 or [email protected]. CLICK HERE TO VIEW PHOTOS FROM THE UCLA OLYMPIAN REUNION WEEKEND CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE UCLA CHANCELLOR’S CENTENNIAL SCHOLARSHIP MATCH PROGRAM Bruin Olympian Reunion Weekend – September 23-24, 2016 On September 23rd, Bruin Olympians past and present began a weekend of festivities as they were honored for their outstanding achievement in representing their country and UCLA at the Olympic games. This inaugural Bruin Olympian reunion, hosted by the Athletics Department, was not only a way to honor these extraordinary athletes, but a way where they could meet and reconnect with fellow teammates and other Bruin Olympians. UCLA was represented in every Olympic games since its inception in 1919 except for one (1924) and out of over 400 Bruin Olympians, nearly 100 attended the weekend’s events. The festivities began Friday evening, where a reception and dinner were held at a private residence in Brentwood, where Olympians in attendance mingled and received a special UCLA “Olympian” hat for them to wear at Saturday’s football game. UCLA alum and LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman was also in attendance and spoke to guests about Los Angeles’ bid for the Olympics in the year 2024. Saturday’s activities began with a campus tour of the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex, which included seeing the “42 Statue”, John Wooden Statue, Drake Stadium, LA Tennis Center, Acosta Athletic Training Center and Weight Room, Pauley Pavilion, and the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. Later in the day was the UCLA vs. Stanford football game, which began with tailgating at the exclusive Then Now Forever tent at the Rose Bowl, where Olympians mingled with former football student-athletes, donors and friends. During the UCLA vs. Stanford football game, all Olympians received on-field recognition at halftime, where they were given a standing ovation. It was a proud moment for the Olympians and a proud moment to be a Bruin. EVENT RECAP Men’s Basketball Open Practice and Tip-Off Dinner – October 19, 2016 This month, UCLA Athletics will be hosting the 2016 Men’s Basketball Open Practice and Tip-Off Dinner on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. All members of the Wooden Athletic Fund are invited to attend this event, as well as those who have donated to support the Mo Ostin Basketball Center or the UCLA Men’s Basketball Bruin Hoopsters Fund. This will be a great opportunity to join together with fellow Bruins and watch the new team members practice with the returning players and see how the coaches run their drills and scrimmages. Dinner will be held in the Pavilion Club in Pauley Pavilion, where Head Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Alford will introduce the 2016-17 team, coaches, and staff, as well as give an inside preview of the upcoming season. For more information regarding this event or to see how you can qualify for complimentary admission, please call 310-206-3302, or email [email protected]. UPCOMING EVENT Late last month the UCLA Athletic Department announced a significant financial contribution from NBA All-Star Kevin Love to its Mo Ostin Basketball Center project. This gift matches the largest donation in school history made by a former basketball student-athlete – Kevin’s UCLA teammate Russell Westbrook. In honor of Kevin’s gift, once the Mo Ostin Basketball Center is completed, UCLA's basketball-specific strength and conditioning facility will be known as “The Kevin Love Strength and Conditioning Center.” For his generosity, Kevin was honored during the first quarter break on the field during the UCLA vs. Stanford football game at the Rose Bowl, and was presented with a large plaque to commemorate his gift. After speaking briefly to the crowd, he led the packed Rose Bowl in a spirited UCLA 8-Clap. As a freshman, Kevin helped lead the Bruins to a Final Four appearance in 2008, leaving UCLA after that season to pursue a career in the NBA. Since being drafted into the NBA, Kevin has been an NBA All-Star three times, a gold medal winner on the U.S. Men’s Basketball team, and a member of the 2016 NBA Championship team. The Mo Ostin Basketball Center, currently under construction, is on schedule to open in late 2017. Additional naming opportunities remain. For more information on how to become involved in this campaign, please contact the Wooden Athletic Fund Office at 310-206-3302, or visit www.uclabasketballfacility.com. NCAA VIOLATIONS AT STANFORD INVOLVING BOOSTERS – DON’T LET IT HAPPEN HERE!

The player was given a one-game suspension and the housing program was discontinued by the university because of the risks involved.

By definition, Wooden Athletic Fund members are boosters. Once identified as a booster, that status remains forever and NCAA rules will always apply to you. NCAA rules are clear that you MAY NOT provide gifts, money, loans, transportation, housing, restaurant meals, groceries, discounted or free services or any other extra benefit to a current UCLA student-athlete or prospec-tive student-athlete or their relatives or friends.

What is “Institutional Control?”

When college athletic programs make headlines for NCAA rules violations, a lack of institutional control is often cited when significant penalties are involved. The NCAA Constitution provides that UCLA must:

• Control its intercollegiate athletic program in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations;

• Monitor its program, including identifying and reporting to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and take corrective actions; and

• Insure that coaches, student-athletes, university staff and others representing UCLA’s athletic interests share responsibility for complying with NCAA rules. As an NCAA member, UCLA is responsible for the actions of its alumni and supporters.

Scholarship Endowments - UCLA Chancellor’s Centennial Scholars Match Program There is a new, limited-time opportunity available to enhance the impact of giving to create a Forever Champions UCLA Student-Athlete Scholarship Endowment. The UCLA Chancellor’s Centennial Scholars Match program was recently announced, the aim of which is to add $150 million to endow undergraduate scholarship support. With this challenge, scholarship endowment donations of $75,000 up to $1M will be matched by the UCLA Campus at 50%, meaning that 50% will be added to your total endowment fund! Gifts eligible for matching funds can be to establish a new endowment or to add to an existing endowment.

Besides the knowledge that your gift will assist generations of UCLA student-athletes with their financial needs, an endowed scholarship leaves a lasting legacy in your name for the sport of your choice. Another key benefit of our UCLA Athletics Forever Champions Scholarship Endowment program is that when a scholarship endowment is established with UCLA Athletics, you automatically receive 5% annually in credit towards the Wooden Athletic Fund for the remainder of your lifetime. With this matching program, you can get 50% more WAF credit at no additional cost to you.

This challenge will be offered through June 30, 2017 and matching funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds have been committed. Because these funds are accessible to every unit on campus, we encourage you to act quickly before this unique opportunity is gone.

For more information regarding the Scholarship Match Program, please contact Sarah Lazaro at [email protected] or (310) 206-1952, or [email protected].

Bruin Olympian Reunion Weekend – September 23-24, 2016 On September 23rd, Bruin Olympians past and present began a weekend of festivities as they were honored for their outstanding achievement in representing their country and UCLA at the Olympic games.

Late last month the UCLA Athletic Department announced a significant financial contribution from NBA All-Star Kevin Love to its Mo Ostin Basketball Center project. This gift matches the largest donation in school history made by a former basketball student-athlete – Kevin’s UCLA teammate Russell Westbrook. In honor of Kevin’s gift, once the Mo Ostin Basketball Center is completed, UCLA's basketball-specific strength and conditioning facility will be known as “The Kevin Love Strength and Conditioning Center.”

For his generosity, Kevin was honored during the first quarter break on the field during the UCLA vs.
