BRUINS HIT THE ROAD FOR GAME AT MEMPHIS UCLA (2-0), which moved into the national rankings for the first time this season at No. 25 in the Associated Press poll, travels to Memphis (1-0) for a non-conference match up on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. PT/ 11 a.m. CT. The game will be televised by ABC on a full national basis. The Bruin IMG Radio Network will radio broadcast the contest which will also be aired over Sirius/XM, uclabruins.com and tunein.com and the TuneIn App. UCLA is 4-1 in first road games of a season under Coach Jim Mora.
The Bruins last faced Memphis in a 2014 game played in the Rose Bowl and prevailed in that contest by a score of 42-35.Quarterback Brett Hundley passed for 396 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Paul Perkins rushed for two scores and UCLA
withstood a fourth-quarter push by the Tigers for a victory. After two straight scores by the visiting Tigers evened the score at 35, Hundley found Thomas Duarte for a 33-yard TD pass with 10:52 left. The Bruins defense then made three late stops to secure the victory. Memphis future first-round NFL draft selection Paxton Lynch passed for 305 yards and rushed for a score.Thomas Duarte finished with two TD passes and linebacker Myles
Jack rushed for his first score of the season, from 4-yards out in the third quarter. Perkins found the end zone on a 17-yard score on UCLAs second drive. Hundley then threw a picture-perfect pass to Kenneth Walker for another score. Hundley established a school record with the third 400-yard total offense effort of his career (422 yds) after completing a then school-record-tying 33 passes for 396 yards and three scores.
THE WATCH LIST The last time the Bruins played in Memphis was in the 1976 Liberty Bowl. It was the first time UCLA had participated in a bowl game other than
the Rose Bowl. Alabama defeated the Bruins 36-6 in that contest played on December 20, 1976 in 34-degree weather before a crowd of over 52,000. Theotis Brown (1,092) and Wendell Tyler (1,003) became UCLAs first twin thousand-yard rushers for a season during the game.
UCLA senior associate head coach/ tight ends Rip Scherer was the head coach at Memphis from 1995-2000. One of his biggest wins came in a 1996 upset of then No. 6-ranked Tennessee. The 26-point underdog Tigers scored a last-minute touchdown to secure a 21-17 win over the Vols, the first in Memphis program history after 15 straight losses to Tennessee, which would go 10-2 that season including a win in week two over the Bruins.
A win over Memphis would be the 599th in UCLA football program history. The Bruins played their first games in the 1919 season. Josh Rosens 9 scoring passes in the last two games sit behind Drew Olson, who threw 11 in a pair of 2005 games vs. Wash. St. (5) and Oregon
St. (6) on the all-time school list...D. Olson had 13 in a three-game stretch, which is the school standard for that stretch. Dating back to 1980, Rosens 88% completion performance rates as the second-best by a Bruin QB behind Rick Neuheisels 25-27 effort (.925)
in a 1983 game vs. Washington UCLA, now at #25 according to the Associated Press this week, was last in the AP poll in the 2016 preseason listing (#16) ... It dropped out
after a season-opening overtime loss at Texas A&M. UCLA is 4-1 in first road games of a season under Coach Mora. UCLA has scored a touchdown on 12 of the past 14 drives Josh Rosen has started out under center (end of game v. Texas A&M, end of half v.
Hawaii) ...Over the last 5 quarters of play, Josh Rosen has completed 41 of 51 passes for 620 yards and nine touchdowns, no interceptions. The win over Hawaii was victory #43 for Coach Mora who is in fifth on the all-time Bruin coaching win list. Coach Mora needs seven more Ws to
become just the fourth UCLA head man to reach the 50-win mark (Terry Donahue - 151, Bill Spaulding - 72, Red Sanders - 66, Bob Toledo 49) Josh Rosen is 474 yards shy of tying Cory Paus for 4th on the all-time UCLA career passing yards list and 123 yards shy of tying Paus for the
4th on the career total offense yards list. The Hawaii contest marked Rosens 11th-straight game in which he has played that he has thrown at least one TD pass ... He has at least one
scoring pass in 20 of his 21 career games (not Washington State) ... The Hawaii game was the 7th in which he has at least 3 TD passes. Brett Hundley is the only UCLA quarterback to have thrown for three 300-yard passing games in a row in the same season (2012). Against Hawaii, Darren Andrews became the first Bruin receiver to haul in three touchdowns passes in a game since Marcedes Lewis in 2004.
VS.MEMPHIS/ THE AAC This will be the second meeting between UCLA and the Tigers on the gridiron. The schools last met in 2014, a 42-35 Bruin win in the Rose Bowl.
