TERRI (STELLER) CLEMENSINDUCTED - 1995Teri (Steller) Clemens was a multi-sport athlete and team MVP in softball, field
hockey and tennis during the mid-1970s at Truman. Clemens was the University's1978 Female Athlete of the Year. Clemens was hired by Washington University inAugust of 1985 as their volleyball coach. She led the Bears to the 1989 Division IIItitle, the first in a century of Hilltop athletic history. Clemens then built a dynastythat extended itself to seven NCAA titles, including six in a row from 1991 to 1996.Clemens, who retired at the end of the 1998 season after 14 seasons as head coach of
the Bears, left the program as the winningest coach in NCAA volleyball history by winning percent-age (529-77, .873).
Deb Weno came to Truman and stepped right in as a key contributor on asolid Bulldog softball team. In 1985, the team won the MIAA tournament andwent all the way to the Midwest Regional final of the NCAA Division II tourna-ment. Weno was named MIAA freshman of the year and second-team all-MIAAfor her efforts as a pitcher and at third base. She was a second-team all-MIAApick her sophomore year as the team advanced to the Final Four. She was a first-team all-conference pick her junior year and an NCAA All-American her senior
season. Weno's legacy is still prominent in Bulldog softball, as she still holds several schoolrecords. Weno has the record for most career games played with 173, most career RBI's with 80,most career innings pitched with 526 2/3, most career starts on the mound with 74, most careercomplete games with 71 and most career saves with four.
TRISH (KONGABLE) BROWNINDUCTED - 1996Trisha (Kongable) Brown, a softball pitcher for the Bulldogs, was a
two-time all-MIAA first-team selection, a 1986 NCAA Division II all-America second team pick and a two-time academic all-America. In1986, she was named the MIAA conference MVP. Brown owns 10school records that still stand. She worked as an assistant softball coachwhile she worked on her master's degree in speech pathology.
TAMARA BILLERBECKINDUCTED - 2000Tamara Billerbeck starred for the Bulldogs from 1984-87 in soft-
ball, and also played on the basketball and volleyball teams as well. However it is her exploits on the softball field as a utility player thathave etched her name into the Bulldog record book. She was a first-team all-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association selection ineach of her four seasons with the team, the only Bulldog to ever accom-plish that feat, and was the conference MVP her final year. Billerbeck
was an all-Midwest region pick as a junior and senior, and earned third-team all-Amer-ica honors following her senior campaign. She completed her final year ranked third inthe nation in strikeout average with 7.6 a game, and was 14th with a 0.84 ERA.

Why was the nickname, Bulldogs, selected for Truman StateUniversity? O.C. Bell in 1908 referred to his performers as Bull-
dogs, but it wasn’t an official designation. Sofar as is known, this term wasn’t used againuntil the spring of 1915.
At the time, a committee of students, in-cluding the late President Emeritus WalterH. Ryle, recommended the adoption of the“Bulldog” as the official emblem becauseof the beast’s tenacity and ability to fight
desperately to the end.The spirit of the
Bulldog has been ev-ident since the name was
selected 90 years ago. It’snot unique though, as atleast 16 NCAA schools
have adopted the "Bulldog".
What’s In A Nickname?
