MEDIA EVALUATION QUESTION 6 & 7

Page 2: Media Evaluation - Question 6 & 7

I have learnt how to use Word press which is an online blog where I can update posts consistently. I uploaded posts of my progress with media such as screen shots, videos and text of my production.

I also had learn how to use a professional video editing software, Final Cut Pro X. This was on the Mac OSX operating system which was different for me as I normally use Microsoft Windows 8. I had to adapt to using this editing software as I was used to using Windows Movie Maker which was a lot simpler to transfer footage and edit it.

I have also learnt the power of camera angles and their individuals meanings when used. For example a low angle shot connotes power, dominance and high status.

I have improved my skill in making title sequences with different fonts, colors, and animations. This was key because a lot of credits and story points were needed in my film.

I have also learnt how to download, play and edit copyright free music. This is also helpful because it also allowed me to decide which music suits my production the most. Downloading copyright free sound effects is also helpful because the default sound effects in the editing software aren’t perfect which made me research for more suitable ones. For example the gunshot sound in my production.

Lastly I have learnt how to use the Nikon D3200 (DSLR) camera which required me to change the zoom and focus manually.

I have also learnt how key the story board is for the production of a film. The storyboard is key because it plans out all your camera angles, body language and props. Although my production isn’t exactly the same as the storyboard is gives a strong idea of what you’re going to do and vital moments which are key for the film. These are a few pages of my storyboard.

My preliminary task wasn’t as good as my final production because of many reasons. One reason was because of the sound. The sound quality was very poor in the preliminary task because of the camera microphone quality. The sound file was very poor. The wind interfered with the dialogue and the sound effects from this I learnt that sound obviously is a big part in the production as it needs to be clear what is occurring and what purposely has been placed there for the audience to hear. In the preliminary task the sound was jumping about and skipped a lot due to different footage being put together via movie maker which isn’t great compared to Final Cut Pro X. I learnt to fix this we has to use pre recorded sound and place it over the footage such as the clock noise in the preliminary task.

Another point is that the specific angles we used didn't really match the purpose of the shot. We did this so we have a variety of camera angles to chose from and see what suits the purpose of the shot the best. At that moment when editing the preliminary task (Feed the Fish) I learnt that different shots clearly have different meanings and needed to be shot in a certain way to suit the purpose perfectly.

For example this low angle shot. This shot shows that the boss (Katie) has a lot more power over the person who had taken care of the job. This gives the viewer a clearer view on who is in charge and who is meant to seem more frightening and aggressive.

Finally I learnt that breaking the 180 degree rule played a big part in working out what is going on. We broke the 180 degree rule a few times which we fixed. From this we could recognize that our viewers were lost because they couldn’t tell where each character was meant to be in the room. After a short while we finally got the hang of using the 180 degree rule correctly and didn't break it noticing that the footage was edited correctly.

From the screen shots on the next slide you can see that the cut between each character when speaking, do not go over the table. This shows that the 180 degree rule is used correctly after being fixed. We learnt from this mistake as these screenshots indicate how hard it would have been to understand the placement of the camera if the rule was broken.

PRODUCT? I have also learn that the placement of props (clothes)

when cutting away should stay the same unless being used. If they do not stay the same it can indicate to the viewer that the shot was taken at a different time which gives the viewer a bad opinion on the film and shows poor planning. These screenshots show that my bracelet is in two different places on my arm when there is no movement shown which would have affected this in the footage. This shows to me that it is important to keep everything the same if possible so that the footage is accurate.

I have also learnt that a more detailed story board is needed. This is important because otherwise you will not get the correct intended shots. The story board for my preliminary task is a lot less detailed than my final production story board. I knew when making my final production story board that it had to be very detailed in order to shoot important footage correctly. These also helped me a lot when editing.
