Media Evaluation Question 1
By Holly Crossley Turner
• 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
• Before I created my own music video I did plenty of research into other music videos and the conventions they typically have. My video has some of the usual conventions of a music video but challenges others. My video also contains conventions of previous Israel Kamakawiwo’ole videos.
Artist in the music video
• At first my video conforms to the convention of having the artist in the video because in the opening part of the video the artist is the only one on screen.
• However, apart from a few small tiny parts towards the end the artist is not featured in my video. Instead there are other people singing along to the artists song. This challenges the usual convention of having the artist in the majority of the video.
Lip synching
• Lip synching is a common convention of music videos. My music video conforms to this convention as the whole video features lip synching.
The music channel logo and title of song and artist.
• When conducting my research into music videos I watched plenty of music channels. Through doing this it became apparent that every video on a music channel includes the music channel logo and titles which include the name of the artist and the song. I stuck to this convention and included both of these in my own video.
Scenes of nature • Whilst scenes of nature are not a typical convention of all
music videos they are an extremely common feature of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole videos. I have stuck to this convention and included some footage of nature in my own video.

A ‘feel good’ feeling• Having a video which gives off a feel good vibe is not
only a typical convention of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole videos, it is also typical in videos of the pop/easy listening genre which my song fits into. I have stuck to this convention by including scenes of people laughing and having fun which should hopefully reflect on to the audience.
• In conclusion my music video mainly stuck to the conventions of previous music videos, in particular the conventions of previous Israel Kamakawiwo’ole videos. The major convention it challenged though was having the artist in the video as the artist of my video was only in it a small amount.
