How does your media product represent particular social groups?

MASTHEAD- Juke Box

Juke box-a coin-operated phonograph, typically in a gaudy, illuminated cabinet, having a variety of records that can be selected by push button.

In the 1920’s/ 1930’s the Juke Box was very popular way to listen to music. Its normally associated with antique, classic and old fashion.

This therefore represents alternative representation for the Pop genre as its not expected to be recognised with old fashion in fact quite the opposite ; current, fresh and modern. However I wanted

my magazine to have an edge but not too out there as it still needs to follow the basic guidelines or it wouldn’t represent the social groups.

So… the indie genre which completes my magazine links with the Juke Box idea as the social groups that are categorised indie also follows the vintage image too so therefore it’s acknowledged as Dominant representation for this subculture which ties the magazine together.

Colour Schemes

The front cover and somewhat on the contents page I followed the typical Orange and black colour scheme which is associated with Halloween (Dominant representation)

I wanted to also wanted to add more personal colour that both social groups could relate to; Purple for Pop and Red expressing the indie genre.

RED- Danger, love, fire, passion, war, desire, hurt, blood, determination, sexy & energy

PURPLE- power, nobility,

luxury, and ambition,

independence, creativity, mystery &

magic.

Content- Cover lines, Stories, Articles

Front Cover- I've included current gossip, gigs, fame and tours which all express the fun with friends going out enjoying yourself; living life to the full which follows the idea of Dominant ideology.

Double Page Spread- it feature a teen girl group which is dominant representation as this would be expected an the norm for the target audience. The double page spread includes fashion, love, gossip and fame which relates to all teenagers and expresses dominant ideology

Pictures…

Trees in the background to represent the Halloween spooky theme.

The face paint, again dominant representation as it dressing up and costume is expect at Halloween.

Clothing just a blazer pretty mainstream fashion like pop music .

The blazer with no top, show the sex appeal without being over the top which is appropriate for teenagers.

Coloured hair show the indie side but also the pop as coloured hair has recently become more mainstream.

All wearing dresses black again representing indie genre and the pink poke a dot give s sense of the Pop music

The props ( skulls) all relate to the Halloween side of the magazine an also the rock/indie style.

This image represent dominant

ideology as it shows fun in

the teenagers face portraying

the norm of having fun and living lie to the

full.

This image is the typical hand on hip pose expressing the typical model and teenage moods.

Fonts:

Halloween- the inked letters and the hand prints give a horror, death , mysterious and dark atmosphere.

Pop- the cut out letters and a mixture of capitals and lower case letter create a fun, bubbly and lively sense which represents the Pop genre and teenagers.

The old rocky look of the font express the indie side of music and also relates to the band featured in the article. The line through the title portrays the rebellious side of teenagers.

This font is again shows the indie genre but with elegance expressing the emotions the audience may have; hurt and ease.

The mast head was important so I tired to show a mixture of pop and rock/indie to it indicates to the reader the type of magazine. I went for a font which is rocky, damaged with swirls. I have followed the colour scheme of red and purple expressing the genres and is explained more on ‘Colour’ page.

Layout:

The way the images are places within the text express bursting with life, fresh, confident, bubbly and fun. This is dominate ideology as it again sending the message of teenagers having fun

The females in this article illustrate teenage individuality as they all express there own style and the separate images even though they also exist as a group

The broken up text with images and stamps muddled up refers to the teenage audience as it shows a fun and varied expression of a weighty text; Rather than a stereo typical newspaper suited for mature/professional readers.

The red stamps were added to create a scrapbook feel expressing the stereo typical girls diary.

The large image reflects the boldness of teenagers and the expression of their personality and society we live in today.

The bright colours express the Pop element of this magazine. It also follow the scrapbook/ diary idea.

The makeup express the Dominant representation as it would be expected to be associated with Halloween.

Dominant ideology is expressed here as its encouraging teenager to go out to music festivals and enjoy time with friends and life.

Its featuring a teenage female artist which is emergent ideology as its portraying young females as successful and independent.

Alternative representation- its different that this magazine features both a Indie/Rock and Pop. This is indicated to the audience by the names of artists (association)

The spilt makeup also indicates to the reader there may be a divide: in this case the music genres.

Alternative representation- from research an planning I learnt there wasn’t many if any Halloween featured magazines but how ever there were elements shown. So the Halloween special is a very different idea.
