For one week of the year, thedarkness and quiet of the PineBarrens are replaced with thesounds of carousels, carnivalgames and the aroma of home-cooked goodies. That week waslast week as the Pine Barrens Fes-tival celebrated 25 years.

Its been a great success, an-other great community-buildingevent, Father Andrew Jamiesonof Church of the Holy Eucharistsaid on the opening night of thefestival. We just want everyoneto turn out and enjoy a great timewith their families and children, enjoy great food and great enter-tainment. Its a great time.

The annual festival takes placeon the Church of The Holy Eu-charists property and continuesto be the biggest event on the re-gions calendar. Between 35,000and 40,000 visitors were expectedto visit this year and enjoy thefamily friendly atmosphere,

while supporting a good cause. The money goes directly to

the parish and its upkeep for theyear. Its our biggest fundraiserfor the church, Jamieson said.We need a new roof, with theproject beginning in September, and $70,000 is slated for that sowere hoping the festival can go along way in raising that.

    Finally, nine months after Super-

    storm Sandy touched ground,

    New Jerseys economy is gain-

    ing momentum.

A report released last week by Wells

Fargo, the states second largest bank

by deposits, says that federal and in-

surance money flowing into the stateto aid in the Sandy recovery started to

pay dividends in the first half of 2013,

and should continue to propel the

economy for the rest of this year.

According to the report, the state

    added 4,200 construction jobs from

January to June of this year. The

same time last year, the industry lost

    4,500 jobs.

Its a great sign for the state. Gov.

    Christie estimated New Jersey suf-

fered $37 billion in damage from the

    storm. Approximately 22,000 homes

    were left uninhabitable and 325,000

    others were significantly damaged.

Now, in the dead of the summer, with the start of hurricane season ap-

    proaching again, construction is heat-

ing up, fueling the states overall eco-

    nomic recovery.

The Wells Fargo report wasnt all

    peachy, though. While New Jerseys

    economy was significantly better in

the first half of this year compared to

last, it still lags behind national aver-ages. Six percent of all mortgages are

    in foreclosure, the second-highest rate

in the country behind only Florida.

Housing prices grew only 2.9 percent

year over year, while the national aver-

age stood at 12.2 percent. New Jerseys

    unemployment rate dropped almost a

point in the last year, and that trend is

expected to continue, but it still sits at

8.7 percent compared to the national

    average of 7.6 percent.

    These stats beg the questions:

Should we compare New Jersey to the

rest of the country? Or should we justcompare the Garden State to itself ?

New Jersey is a very unique state in

that its economy is fueled strongly by

    two major metropolitan regions whose

city is in another state. The economy

    works differently here. Employment

    works differently here. Elections work

differently here. So why, then, if we

are an outlier, must we compare our-

    selves to others?

For once, we need to focus on our

own recovery, and ensure we are

adding as many jobs as we can, no

matter what our stats look like com-

    pared to every other state.

Recovery finally catching a breakConsiderable momentum gained in first half of 2013, report says

    Your thoughts

Should we rejoice in the positive outlookfor New Jerseys economy? Or shouldwe be worried that we lag behind therest of the country? Let your voice beheard through a letter to the editor.

police reportsThe following is on file with the Med-

    ford Township Police Department:

Medford Township Police announce thearrest of seven subjects involved in threeseparate home invasions and the attempt-ed murder of a quadriplegic Medford man.

The arrests were a result of a five-month investigation, which began on Feb.24. At approximately 2:11 a.m,. four indi-viduals entered the home of the 47-year-

old disabled man while he slept. The four suspects intended to rob the

victim, however two of the suspects hadalso conspired to kill the victim.

One of the suspects was armed with aknife and attempted to kill the victim as heslept in his wheelchair. However, he wasstopped by one of the co-conspirators be-fore injuring the victim.

On May 7, at 2:55 a.m., the four men re-

nate their time to the event fromboth within and outside theparish. The parish maintains allthe booths, and the only part ofthe event run by an outsidesource is the rides.

Majestic Midways continuesto be great in providing the rides,

and they draw a lot of people tothe festival, Jamieson said. After 25 years, the thought may

be that not much would changeyear to year, but for the first timea classic car show was part of thecelebration.

We had more than 70 cars and15 monster trucks, Jamiesonsaid. We hoped it would bringmore people, come see the carsthen check out the festival or getsomething to eat. Were definitelyhappy about it being a part of the

event. Its not all funnel cakes and

games as each night of the festi-val is dedicated to honoring a Vol-

Each town nominates two peo-ple and the festival committeemakes the selection of who is Vol-unteer of the Year, said MaryFischl, chairperson of the Cul-ture and History and Nature Re-sources tent at the festival, in ad-dition to organizing Volunteers ofthe Year. The award is given tosomeone who has made an out-standing contribution to the cul-

    If you've been wearing

dentures for a long time, you know what the den-ture look means. Not

    everyone who wears den-

tures is old, but when den-

tures get old, they make you

look that way. Thin lips, deep creases at the corners

    of the mouth, a more

    prominent chin these are

    all signs of the denture

    look.Facelift Dentures is a

    new technique. Mt. Holly

Family Dentistry is one of a

    very few dental offices in

the US trained in thisprocess. It utilizes the prin-

    ciples of neuromuscular

    dentistry that we have, for

many years, used to help pa-

    tients who suffer from

headaches and TMJ prob-lems. We start with relaxed

    facial muscles to determine

    the most comfortable bite

position and the optimumfacial aesthetics. We build

the denture from that as astarting point and with

    those goals in mind.

    Mt. Holly Family Den-

tistry has a lot of experi-ence creating new smiles

    for our patients. Dental

    makeovers have been a cor-

    nerstone of our practice for

many years. Now we can ex-tend that service to denture

    patients. We frequently get

    notes and letters from

    spouses and children of our

patients telling us what adifference the new dentures

    have made. Its an exciting

    and gratifying process for

    doctor and patient. For

    Police chief remindsresidents of many

    ways to report crime

dents entered in the system, Bew-ley said.

We view it as a very effectiveprogram, he said.

According to Meder, the infor-mation used from New World Sys-tems assists in identifying crimepatterns in Medford that may besimilar in other towns.

It makes information in othertowns a little more readily avail-able. For instance, we can talk toEvesham if something pops up,like a rash of burglaries, and talkto them about how to stop it,Meder said.

In addition to New World Sys-tems, the department utilizesFacebook to provide information

to residents. One of the things we have

done is maintain a good relation-ship with homeowners alliancesthroughout the township, Medersaid, noting the Facebook pageand email alerts to the alliancesnotify them of crime patterns. Ifwe see something thats affectingthe township, we to try make peo-ple aware of whats going on sothey can be more vigilant.

Meder suggests simple solu-tions to preventing crime, includ-ing locking doors at night or whenresidents have left the property.

Medford is a safe place, butpeople need to be cognizant oftheir homes. Something as simpleas locking your doors can deter[criminals], Meder said. Wewant to have a better relationshipwith the public to communicatewith them. Theyre our eyes andears.

There are 28 officers on Med-ford Townships police force. Ac-cording to Meder, at the height ofemployment, there were as manyas 49.

Meder recently applied for agrant that would allow the town-ship to hire more officers.

The council has allowed us toapply for the grant. Hopefully itwill work out, Meder said.

Meder wants to remind resi-dents there are multiple ways toreport crime in Medford, includ-ing the citizen tip hotline, theFacebook page, the website and ageneric email to which they cansend in anything.

To report crimes in the area, call the confidential tip line at(609) 714-0302, contact the police at(609) 654-7511, or through email [email protected].
