Direct observation Counting each organism in a population.Ex: We counted all the tomato plants in the
garden.
Indirect Observation Counting the signs of the population.Ex: We counted all of the prairie dog holes.
SamplingCounting the number in a small area then
estimating the big area.Ex: We counted how many fish were in a
small part of the pond then estimated the number in the whole pond.
Mark-and-recaptureCapturing a few of one species marking
them then come back and see how many are marked there
Ex: We captured a few birds marked them then waited for more to come back and counted the ones with marks.
