MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS AND PRECISION MEASUREMENT

INTRODUCTION:With the introduction of space-age technology, machines have been developed which are capable of producing workpieces to extremely fine tolerances. Measurement has assumed a very important role in machine shop and manufacturing.

MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS AND PRECISION MEASUREMENTThe need for accurate measurement was necessary because of interchangeable manufacture, where parts produced in one plant maybe assembled with parts from another country. This type of manufacturing and assembly requires that all parts are made to accurate size with very close tolerances. The need for high precision have, in turn, led to the need for a standardized system of international measurement. MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS AND PRECISION MEASUREMENTIntroduction:

TWO MAJOR SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENT USED IN THE WORLDA) The metric (decimal) systemB) Inch-pound [US Customary System, (USCS)]

Over 90 % of the worlds population uses some form of the metric system

Inch- pound system is traditionally used in North AmericaMEASUREMENT SYSTEMS AND PRECISION MEASUREMENTMEASUREMENT SYSTEM:OBJECTIVES:The aim of this unit is to enable you to.Identify the various measurement SystemsUnderstand the relationship between the inch and metric measurement systemKnow when precision and semi-precision tools should be used MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS AND PRECISION MEASUREMENT

METRIC(DECIMAL) SYSTEM:SI Short for French word Systeme Internationale -Is the most advanced and easiest to use system of measurement.

Meter(m) is the base unit of length in SI-All other unit are directly related to the meter by a factor of 10.- In order to convert from a smaller to a larger unit, or vice versa, divide or multiply by 10, 100 etc.

INCH-POUND SYSTEMInch-Pound system(USCS) has for many years been the standard of North American IndustryInch- is the base unit of length-Other linear units are related to the base unit by odd and unusual factor- Can be divided by halves, quarters eights, sixteenths, thirty-seconds, sixty-fourths, tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths, etc. Some linear units larger than inch:1 foot = 12 inches = 0.3048 m1 yard = 36 inches = 0.9144 m1 mile = 63, 360 inches = 1609.344 mInch- Pound system is far more complex than SI
