RAMS & GUESTS Spring Getaway
Pinehurst, NC Save the dates of April 12 to 15 for the RAMS spring getaway to Whispering
Woods and Legacy in warm sunny Pinehurst, NC. Guests are welcome.
Also, mark March 1st as the date checks are due to the RAMS.
RE-GRIP SPECIAL The winter “off season” is the perfect time to have your golf clubs re-gripped. Players tend to grip their clubs too tightly when their grips are worn and slick. This creates tension in the set up resulting in short, fast, and choppy golf swings. The end results are errant shots and poor scores.
During March the Golf Shop is offering 2 FREE Grips when you install a full set of 13 grips, ANY style (you’ll pay for 11 grips).
Turn-around time can be as fast as one day depending on what day you leave your clubs for re-gripping. This offer applies to full sets only.
Congratulations, John Hall, who won the drawing for guessing the
correct hole of our Golf Display. Members who guessed correctly were
placed in a drawing for (2) Complimentary Buffet Tickets!

Bird Dog: “No, I just try to live my life by this
philosophy.”
Bird Dog: “Hey remember this, it’s easy to grin,
when your ship comes in,
and you’ve got the stock market beat.
But the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile,
when his shorts are too tight in the seat!?
Hamburger: “Bird Dog, I’ve sentenced boys younger than
you to the gas chamber. Didn’t wanna do it, but I felt I
owed it to them.”
Pomona Roman: “Superintendent Weedwacker, do we
have a grounds keeping analogy to shaving?”
Chairman Wisegarbage: “OK, thanks everyone for your
input. Steve, is it safe to say in closing that while a roller,
would be an excellent tool, we do have other equipment
needs with a higher priority?”
Superintendent Weedwacker: “Definitely! We have a
number of equipment needs that would help us
immensely, if the membership can find a way to get
them. And finally, thatching is the closest thing to
shaving that we do. However, we do not require much
thatch removal, since the grasses we use are not big
thatch producers. I would classify our grass removal as
more depilatory in nature as opposed to shaving.”
Chairman Wisegarbage: “On that note, meeting
adjourned.”

From the GREENS to the CLUBHOUSE
Communiqué from the MCC Green Committee
In January it was brought to my attention that the first two editions of this monthly
message may have contained references to individuals that were a bit too vague. For the
February communiqué I tried to be a little less obscure with my name associations.
However, it is not as much fun to use real names. Also, I don’t want the membership to
think that my only resource for topics is from the Grill. Fortunately, last month’s topic
about gifts to the Club meshes nicely with what I will share this month. This time, my
message does not come from the Grill, but from the inner sanctum of Committee work.
With that said I hope to provide you with a brief glimpse into the very inner workings of
one of our most important Committees, the Green Committee. A full transcript of the
minutes from our most recent meeting would be far too long to share in the Newsletter. A
segment of the dialog discussing just one issue from our most recent meeting might be
interesting.
Chairman Wisegarbage: “Recently it was suggested to Steve that some donated funds
might be available for a new Roller. While this offer is extremely generous, there may be
some equipment needs that should take priority.”
Superintendent Steve Weedwacker: “That is correct. MCC has never had a roller and
while it would be an excellent tool, we have some greater equipment needs to maintain our
course in a consistent manner.”
Hamburger: “What exactly does the roller do?”
General Manager Poppincorn: “One important aspect to a roller is that it can be used to
flatten the grass on the greens if mowing must be delayed. This can help keep the putting
surfaces more consistent.”
Superintendent Weedwacker: “That’s right. A roller can be used to smooth greens and is often used in conjunction with mowing to increase green speed. In our case, a roller would be used as an alternative to mowing. However, the roller would not be used as a replacement to mowing during wet weather since it would significantly increase the rate of soil compaction at the greens surface. Compaction is an important issue at MCC due to how our greens are constructed. Having efficient and well functioning mowers is far more important to conditions than rolling.”
Bird Dog: “I understand. It’s like a bad comb-over. Rather than cutting the hair, you
mash it down, flatten it out and try to cover things up.”
Mort: “I see people every day that must use rollers on their heads.”
Lois Hitsitstrate: “Gentlemen, rollers can have different meanings. I know many ladies
who use rollers to build body in their hair.”
Pomona Roman: “I agree Lois. But being able to properly cut the grass rather than paste
it down is a bigger priority when it comes to equipment.”
GM Poppincorn: “Yes, and we also need to keep in mind that mowing and then rolling
requires additional labor.”
Superintendent Weedwacker: “We have two Toro Sandpro bunker rakes that are so old
and worn that we are concerned about them being available for this golf season. One unit
has over 6000 hours of run time.”
Bird Dog: “Wow, now we’ve gone from comb-overs to exfoliation.”
Hamburger: “So the bunker rake is sort of like a loofah?”
Mort: “Judge Smail’s wife liked to use a loofah.”
Lois Hitsitstrate: “Well even sand traps need a good loofah from time to time.”
Hamburger: “Bird Dog, that is profound, do you own a boat?”

Club de Vin News Thank you to all who came to the February Wine Club, and special thanks to
Cheryl and Melissa, who by all reports did a fantastic job in my absence. Please
allow me the opportunity to thank these two publicly because without them, and
their help, I am not sure I could continue making Club de Vin what it is to all of us.
There is so much work and preparation that goes on behind the scenes and I so
appreciate all they do in support; and keep in mind these two are not (yet) even
members of Meadowbrook Country Club! (Hey, maybe we should “comp” our
Membership Director a wine tasting to seek out these two prospective members!)
Anyway, we are so excited that 2015 has been extremely well attended and the
Wino of the Year race is off to a great start with some surprising new winos in the
forefront of the race. And more importantly, we have a lot of wonderful events
planned this year!
~Jerry Creehan, CSW
Taste 4 Chardonnay’s from different regions around the world.
We’ll also sample 2 wonderful reds from our favorite regions in Italy.
For this event, taste two wines in a side-by-side comparison and learn to taste
differences and associate the characteristics of each wine to the region of origin.
