Chapter 3 - How to communicate with the MD110

This chapter deals with how we can communicate with the MD110. How to send commands and the programs we use. You will also meet ALEX, the main source of information about the MD. This Windows-based browser contains all you need to know about commands, parameters and all kinds of instructions on how to use the MD110.

3.3 General

The command language consists of selected parts of CCITT’s Man Machine Language (MML). Commands can be entered from a PC equipped with a V.24 interface. The MML-commands are transmitted from the PC based configuration and maintenance program WinFIOL (FIOL=FIle transfer and OnLine PC program). This programs feature multichannel communication allowing simultaneous connection with three I/O-devices for WinFIOL.

ALEX is an electronic book publishing system that accepts ISO 8879 Standard Generalised Mark-up Language (SGML) text. In ALEX you can find reference documentation about the MD110. It’s a tool designed for you working with the exchange when for example, searching information about MML-commands.

A command consists of a command name possibly followed by one or more parameters.

For communication with the system the following special characters are also used:

- States e.g. supplement when stating hardware position.

, Separates parameters from one another.

& Separates values in a parameter, e.g. 100&200.

&&

Separates start and stop values for a consecutive series, e.g. 100&&200.

: Separates command and parameter part.

; Terminates a command.

The maximum number of characters for a command is 200, i.e. two lines. All characters are in ASCII code.

The NANSI command is a number analysis command and the parameters state what kind of usage the number series will have.

3.5 ALEX

The ALEX browser is a product that allows you to access information about the MD110 in an on-line environment. ALEX displays electronic books in windows on your screen. In this chapter we will only discuss a few things about the browser. To receive further help about how to use ALEX, consult the items in the help-menu in the program.

3.5.1 Searching

3.5.1.1 Overview

Searching is initiated by entering the search parameters in the input field located on the toolbar and pressing the 'Enter' key or clicking the Search button. The Search type pull down menu located after the input field defines the scope of the search. Once the search is completed, a list of matching documents is presented. The document titles in the list are hyperlinks that are used to load the corresponding documents. If only one document matches the specified search criteria, then this document is displayed automatically.

3.5.1.2 Multi library search

It is possibile to search through multiple libraries at a time. When a search is initiated while the document frame shows a list of libraries (i.e. on a sub-level), the search will be carried out in all the listed libraries. When the multi-library search is available the text <Multi-library search> is shown in the search field.

3.5.1.3 Search types

There are five different search types to choose from, that sets the scope of the search performed:

Full Text Search searches through the contents of every document in the library

Document Title searches through the document titles only Command or Block name searches command codes and function block names

only (catchword) Document Identity searches for matching document identities only Title + Command + DocID is a combined search function of the three search

types listed aboveNo search functions are case sensitive.

3.5.1.4 Search expression and wild cards

The normal wild card characters can be used: '?' to represent any one character, and '*' to represent any number of characters. These can be used in all types of searches. Please note, however, that extensive use of wild cards can slow down the search.

To make the search function as easy to use as possible, ALEX will in some cases automatically insert a '*' character at the end of the expression. These cases are:

Document Title search, and Document Identity search

When searching for Command or Block name, the situation is different: For instance when searching for 'RE' the user most probably wants to find that specific catchword (function block RE), and not a list of documents with catchwords beginning with 'RE...'. To get this type of list, 'RE*' must be entered as the search expression.

3.5.1.5 Logical operators

The following standard logical operators are supported for the Full Text Search type: AND, OR and NOT. Also, the use of parenthesis is allowed to compose accurate search expressions.

& AND operator, both terms must be present in a document| OR operator, one of the terms must be present in a document! NOT operator, term following the NOT operator is not allowed in document

Examples

((alarm | allip) & GSM) ! R7 will search for documents containing the words alarm or allip and in addition the word GSM, but will reject documents that contain the term R7.

3.5.1.6 Printing

The Print button located on the toolbar is used when a user wants a high quality paper printout of the document, including the full Ericsson header. This function sends a Postscript version of the currently viewed document back to the browser. What the users browser does with the Postscript file can be configured in the browser preferences. The Postscript file can be saved to local disk or viewed and printed with various plug-in or helper applications, such as GhostView. Thus, the ALEX print function can be seen as an HTML to Postscript converter. The print function in the browser can naturally always be used to make a printed copy of the document format shown in the browser.

3.6 WinFIOL

WinFIOL is the Windows version of the older DOS-based O&M program FIOL.

WinFIOL is the tool used for communication with the MD110. In the program it is possible to enter commands, transmit files or parts of a file and send binary files via X-modem.

Here are a couple of screenshots from the program, executing under Windows NT.

This picture illustrates how to, from an open textfile, mark a few rows. These rows can then be transmitted by pressing F4 or the ‘send lines’ button.

This picture shows how to select the Xmodem feature of WinFIOL from the menu. This can be used to transfer files when making an additional load of a program unit.

3.7 Communication with the system

When communicating with the system you use WinFIOL and the IPU or NIU. We must have an I/O-port that we can use. We know that port number one on the IPU/NIU board is auto-initiated.

If we want to do a network logon we must set this up with command IOEQI.

3.7.1 Initiation of I/O-port

3.7.1.1 IOEQI, Input Output EQuipment position Initiate

IOEQI is used to initiate an I/O port and give it a logical name. The I/O board must have been initiated (IOBPI) before its I/O ports can be initiated.

Each I/O port can be initiated either for terminal traffic (USAGE = MML) or for transferring data from/to an external computer (USAGE = OUT).

The following combinations of parameters are available:

1. IOEQI:IODEV=,EQU=,TYPE=NETWORK,USAGE=MML;

Function: Define stated IODEV as logical name for a MML session over Telnet.To allow more telnet sessions to the Ethernet port, the command must be entered several times with different values for IODEV, e.g. TELNET1, TELNET2.

2. IOEQI:IODEV=,EQU=[,USAGE=MML];

Function: Define V.24 port on I/O board for MML-communication.

3. IOEQI:IODEV=,EQU=,USAGE=OUT;

Function: Define V.24 on NIU as output to another device with no protocol.

4. IOEQI:IODEV=,EQU=,USAGE=OUT,TYPE=NETWORK;

Function: Define V.24 on NIU as networking connection, using PPP.

3.7.2 Removal of I/O-port

The table below illustrates how you remove an I/O-port.

3.8 Log-on to the system using NIU

3.8.1 Account information

The NIU board has a slightly different procedure for logon than the IPU. Instead of having one password for each authority level, it is possible to define user accounts. Up to 64 accounts can be defined.

Information included for each account is:

User name

Password

Authority level

Expiration date

Text description

The system contains a default account (user name = MDUSER, password = HELP, authority class 7, no expiration date). This account is valid after initial load of a system, until a valid account is initiated. At this point it is recommended that the default account be removed (manually).

Both user name and password must be between a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 20 characters long. The text description can be maximum 30 characters long.

3.8.2 Initiation of user account

3.8.2.1 IOUAI, Input Output User Account Initiate

IOUAI is used to initiate new accounts in the system. A maximum of 64 accounts is allowed.

The user may not initiate accounts with the expiration date set later than that of his own account. This check will not be made if IOUAI is entered via IPU.

If the defined date expires, it will not be possible to log in to the system using that account. The account will however remain defined, and can be updated with IOUAC. If the date parameter is not given, no expiration date will be set (account valid forever).

If password is omitted, the account will be given the default password, “HELP”.

When a user account is used for the very first time the system prompts the user to change the password.

3.8.2.2 Removal of user account

Table 2-1 illustrates how to remove a user account.

3.8.3 Procedure to access the system

MML ports can be accessed through V.24, TELNET via PPP or TELNET via Ethernet. It is also possible to access the NIU board directly with NIUX.

3.8.3.1 General

It is only possible to log in to the system from a Telnet or V.24 session. FTP will only give access to the filesystem on the NIU/HDU.

Before a system level login can take place from a Telnet session, a Telnet port has to be defined in the system. This is done with IOEQI.

3.8.3.2 Procedure for V.24 login

Scenario for a login attempt:

1. Press the keys Alt (Esc. In FIOL)and F5 simultaneously to switch to TTY-mode.

2. Send letter S until S is echoed back.

3. Press ; and then RETURN.

4. Result: The screen displays ENTER USER NAME

5. Write MDUSER (No semicolon!)

6. Press RETURN

7. Result: The screen display ENTER PASSWORD

8. Write e.g. HELP (No semicolon!)

9. You are now logged on to system.

10. Switch back to buffer mode by pressing Alt (Esc. In FIOL)and F5 at the same time.

3.8.3.3 Procedure for TELNET login

3.8.3.3.1 Setting of IP address

IONPC, Input Output Network Port configuration Change

The command is used to change the network configuration of an I/O port; i.e. IP address and so on. The network port must not have any open connections. Only the parameters that are stated will be changed, other parameters will keep their existing values.

The network port configuration can be reset by specifying IP equal to NONE. The IP address of the network port, the IP address of default gateway, and the address mask will be reset to default values indicating that the network port configuration has not been set.

The IP addresses are normally obtained from the local network administrators.

3.8.3.4 Initiation of a network connection

IONCI, Input Output Network Connection Initiate

IONCI is used to initiate a network connection to an application. Both the network port and the application must have been defined in the system.

Following combinations are available:

1. IONCI:IODEV=,USER=,LPORT= ;

Function: Define stated I/O device (IODEV) to be used as server for stated application (USER).

2. IONCI:IODEV=,USER=,IP=,RPORT= ;

Function: Define stated I/O device (IODEV) to be used as client for stated application (USER) to a server with IP address (IP) and port number (RPORT).

3.8.3.4.1 Removal of a network connection

The table below illustrates how you remove a network connection.

3.8.3.5 TELNET login

Scenario for a login attempt:

1. A user initiates a Telnet session, e.g. TCP/IP channel in WinFIOL, from a remote terminal (PC).

2. NIU (Telnet application on the board) confirms connection to user, a login prompt. Hit ‘Enter’ to proceed.

3. User enters ‘SSSSS;’ to log in to system.

4. NIU senses the attempt to log in and directs it to a free Telnet resource. If no free resource is available, no action is taken.

5. The user is prompted for a user name.

6. User enters name, MDUSER (No semicolon!)

7. The system prompts for a password.

8. User enters password, e.g. HELP (No semicolon!)

9. The user is logged on to the MD.

A maximum of six simultaneous telnet sessions can be open at the same time on one Ethernet port on the NIU. The number is determined by how many I/O devices have been defined on the Ethernet port with IOEQI.

3.9 Log-on to the system using IPU

3.9.1 Passwords

A maximum of 8 words of authorisation, so-called password, can be initiated in the system. A password can consist of a maximum of 16 alpha-numerical characters. Each password is given an authorisation code from 0 up to 7, where 0 indicates the lowest and 7 the highest authorisation. The authorisation code 7 gets the password ‘HELP’ automatically by the system at start-up from the initial load directory. When the remaining 7 passwords have been initiated, ‘HELP’ must be changed to another secret password.

Any command that can be executed from a terminal is assigned to one of the authorisation codes 0 to 7. An operator, who will be able to execute a command, must be given a password with an authorisation code higher than or equal to that of the command. Commands that are initiated from a PABX operator console will not be given any authorisation code, because the PABX operator will be able to execute every command that can be initiated from the PABX operator console.

3.9.2 Procedure to access the system

You can log on to the system from WinFIOL in different ways. Below you will find two of them. They assume that the program is started on a PC that is connected to the MD via a serial cable.

1.

Press CAPSLOCK.

Press the keys Alt and F5 simultaneously to switch to TTY-mode or select TTY-mode in the Config-menu.

Send letter S until S is echoed back. This is in order to synchronise the MD and the PC and determine the transfer speed.

Press ; and then RETURN.

Result: The screen displays ENTER PASSWORD.

Write HELP; and press RETURN.

Now you are logged on to the system.

Switch back to buffer mode by pressing Alt and F5 at the same time or deselecting TTY-mode in the Config-menu.

Press the connect button.

Type in HELP; and press RETURN.

After you have logged on you will get a printout. Here comes an example, where the station is named KARLSKRONA and the IPU board has position 1-0-42-01. The time is not valid, so it has to be set by the command CATII.

3.11 Log-off the system

Manual log-off is performed in the following way:

Press the function key F12 to terminate the command handling.

The system responds with:

If no command has been given for 10 minutes the following printout appears:

3.12 Command execution

Commands that are entered to the system can be given from three different sources:

from I/O terminal or modem via V24 interface.

from a command file on the HDU.

internally in the system, for example from the PABX operator’s telephone set.

3.12.1 Interrupting a command

An authorised maintenance operator have the possibility to send a ‘break’ signal to the system during transmission of data in either direction. This causes the system to be immediately ready to receive commands.

WinFIOL has a break-button or you can use F12. The system will confirm by sending the characters:

When the ‘break’ signal has been initiated the following possibilities are available:

B; ‘RETURN’ to interrupt a printout.

; ‘RETURN’ to continue a printout.

F; ‘RETURN’ to interrupt a command that already has been accepted. If the command has been partly executed, changes in exchange data that may have been performed will remain.

3.12.2 Dangerous commands

A command is classified as ‘DANGEROUS’ if it affects the function of the system, e.g. removal of an extension. Dangerous commands are echoed to the maintenance operator and followed by the printout:

To execute the command, the maintenance operator then has to answer Y; or YES; followed by ‘RETURN’. If the maintenance operator answers N; or NO; followed by ‘RETURN’ the command will not be executed.

3.12.3 Printouts

The system has four different types of printout:

Verification printouts - consists of a command being echoed back to the terminal if the command is classified as dangerous to the system.

Procedure printouts - gives the maintenance operator information whether the command has been executed, partly executed or not executed at all. If the command has been accepted, the following printouts may occur:

EXECUTED The command has been fully executed

ORDERED The command has been accepted by the system but not yet executed. The result of the command will be printed to the terminal when the requested operation has been completed.

If errors are detected during execution, the following printouts are occurred:

NOT ACCEPTED The command is erroneously specified. No action has been taken.

PARTLY EXECUTED The action specified has been partly executed but detection of an error has interrupted the execution.

Immediate response printouts - gives information as soon as the system has accepted a command. If the response time to printout is long, WAIT will be printed.Immediate response printouts terminate with END.

Result printouts (Spontaneous printouts) - don’t appear immediately when the command has been initiated. The printout may appear after the maintenance operator has logged off. The printout may also appear in connection with some other command when the requested job has been finished. Result printouts start with SPONTANEOUS PRINTOUT and terminate with END.

3.13 Exercises

Exercise 1- ALEX

In this exercise you will learn how to use ALEX.

Start Internet Explorer eller Netscape

Enter the address to your ALEX location, i.e. http://ebcalex.ebc.ericsson.se/alexserv.

The ALEX Library window will open.

Choose HELP in the top right corner.

Browse your way through the contents.

Now you are familiar with ALEX. You are going to use it a lot during the course.

Exercise 2 - WinFIOL

Soon you are going to logon to the system and communicate with the exchange. You communicate with the exchange by sending MML-commands in WinFIOL.

Start the WinFIOL program on the PC and bring up the Help window by selecting Contents from the Help-menu for more information.

Exercise 3 - Switch on the power

Before you switch on the power, get a piece of paper and a pen to write down the digits on the LPU display.

Switch on the power.

Write down the numbers that appear on the LPU display.

Look in ALEX for the different meanings of the numbers under Fault locating - General.

Exercise 4 - Logon to the system using V.24 interface on the NIU.

Now it’s time to logon.

Follow the procedure described in the book.

Now the fun starts! You are now able to communicate with the MD110.

Exercise 5 – Set time and date

The function calendar data includes initiating date, time and calibration of time. The time is lost when the entire system is reloaded.

To initiate the clock, use the command CATII:DATE=,TIME=;

Exercise 6 - Extra I/O channel

Because of the logon security protection, it is wise to initiate the other two V.24 individuals as soon as possible. If you fail to logon, the individual you are using will be locked, but if there are others initiated you simply move the cable to one of them and make a new attempt.

Look in ALEX after a command that initiates input/output equipment positions. (Hint! Search for IOxxx).

Exercise 7 – User accounts

You are now going to initiate an account by using the command IOUAI. You are going to have the user name: MD110, password: ACCOUNT,

authority: 5, expiration date: two weeks counting from now and the description: Exercise seven.

After you have done this try the command on your own.

Exercise 8 – Ethernet Connectivity

You are now going to initiate an Ethernet connection.

Print existing port information IONPP.

Change to correct parameter values IONPC (See Instructor for values).

Initiate the port with IOEQI.

Restart Board if required RFBOI:BPOS=1-0-60;

Open Ethernet connection in Winfiol.
