Madama ButterflyTuesday, May 14, 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m.Location: Danville Senior Center, Community Hall

Presenter: Diane Mauch, M. Mus., University of Michigan, Director of Education, Florida Grand Opera

Madama Butterfly is one of Giacomo Puccini’s most famous and frequently-performed operas. Few can resist its story of young love pitted against formidable odds, the exotic setting in which that love unfolds, the pathos of betrayal and abandonment in which the story ends and the soaring musical structures that tell the tale. Ms. Mauch will explore the origins of the opera, which was based on both a novel and a play, and analyze the stylistic and musical atmosphere of 19th century Italian opera in which Puccini’s genius flourished. She will also offer us selected scenes and singing performances from some of the great productions of the opera. The curtain’s about to rise; don’t be late!
