A Message from Your Editor!

Hello readers! Say goodbye to April showers and say hello to May flow-ers! I hope you are all doing well and I hope you are all ex-cited to be reading the May newsletter! It’s the second news-

letter of my term and every since the first I have learned so much from the best so I hope you can see my improvement! I know everyone is stressed since we just finished CST test-

ing and then to add onto that AP testing and finals are slowly but surely coming. However, I have complete faith in all of

you! Study hard but don’t forget to take a break once in a while and breathe! This month I had trouble trying to come up with a layout

and font that would fit for this month and something that would be completely different than the first. Please don’t be afraid to give me some constructive criticism. I want to hear

all of your opinions. I was constantly changing the format of it and was totally unsure of how it looked in the end. I kept

changing it until I was satisfied so I still hope you all like what I produced. Enjoy!

Hollywood Walk @ the Hollywood Walk of Fame

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No it’s Superman!

At the Hollywood Walk members were able to volunteer

beside a Superman impersonator to cheer for the runners in

the marathon. With their great enthusiasm and spirit they were

able to encourage many to cross the finish line. Although

having to stand in the sun for 4 hours, they never lost their

smile or voice and continued to shout their hearts out. While

many were handing out medals as a reward to those who

completed the race, a few of the members also handed back

the personal belongings that the runners left behind to be

taken care of. Although having to spend hours handing out

medals, we were still able to see many stars such as the Past

Action Heroes and Michael Blackson. After the last runner

crossed the finish line with tears in their eyes from feeling ac-

complished that they finished, the volunteers spent time after

the race to clean up. They were able to orderly put tables

back and clean up trash left behind. The day ended with a

raffle to win prizes.

On the weekend of April 20, 2013, Key Club Members had the

opportunity to volunteer at A Noise Within Theater where a riveting

performance of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath took place.

The jobs available at this event included tearing tickets, handing out

programs and audio devices, and ushering theater goers to their

seats.

Once the audience members had started to move into the

theater as a result of the live music being played, everyone had to

work hard and quickly to get everyone programs and into their seats

in a quick and clean fashion. After about twenty minutes of running

around and helping everyone who needed it, the head manager of

the theater unexpectedly told the volunteers that they could take

any empty seat to enjoy the show. While none of the volunteers had

read the book The Grapes of Wrath, everyone really enjoyed the

play and there were even laugh out loud moments as well as times

where everyone in the audience would gasp of surprise. Once the

show had ended in a way that I surely did not expect, it was time for

everyone to move around the seats and clean up any stray trash or

programs.

Once everything had been cleaned up and all our duties com-

pleted, the time was about 11:00 o’clock and we were exhausted.

Despite that, I know everyone had a great time; we were all given

the opportunity to see what it was like to work in a theater and at the

same time we were given a free show. I will definitely be signing up

again as should many others.

March of Dimes & DCM @ University of Southern California

Past Events Continued . . .

On April 27th many Key Clubbers from different divisions

were able to come together in order to walk for the March of

Dimes. This walk helped raise money for premature babies and

to help moms have full term, healthy pregnancies. Upon arriving

at 7:30AM, division 3 north was full of spirit, excitement, and a

passion for helping out to raise money and awareness for the

cause. We started of our day by playing ice breakers which in-

volved having to awkwardly be in contact with someone else

despite the fact you just met them and being quick enough to

shout “WAH!” at the correct time.

Once we started walking at approximately 8:30AM, every-

one was full of laughs and cheers. Throughout the walk, no one

lost their spirit and continually cheered their hearts out in order

to show their true inner Key Clubber. Even though the march re-

quired you to walk for two hours in the blazing sun, everyone

persevered and made it to the finish line.

After a tiring walk, the division was able to come together

to eat a small meal before starting our monthly DCM. We shared

what has been happening in our school clubs in order to keep

each other updated. On this day, we all had the chance to

meet new people and create new friendships along the way.

Today left everyone anticipating for next year.

Special Olympics @ Crescenta Valley HS Track and Field

5

Special Olympics is an event where disabled athletes come and

compete with each other. This year we had over 200 athletes coming

from Antelope Valley, Glendale, Tri-Valley, and many more, these

athletes competed in different events. Examples are 50-meter dash,

100-meter dash, 50-meter walk, long jump, shot put, and many more.

The one that stood out to me was the wheel chair race. Before the ath-

letes could do all this, they did the opening ceremony. The opening

ceremony had the Marching Band playing, Color Guard dancing and

doing their thing, and the cheerleaders cheering them on. The cheer-

leaders had a special cheer just for the athletes, which made them

pumped up. After the opening ceremony, the athletes had done a

warm-up stretching routine, which was led by a USC coach and his

assistants. This routine had the athletes really warmed up now.

Then the games began, with races going constantly and awards

handed out. These awards were handed out by the firemen and po-

licemen who congratulated all the athletes for doing their best. Even

though everyone could not have gotten first place there were still

smiles everywhere you see. This event could not have been com-

pleted if not for the over 400 volunteers that volunteered. The volun-

teers were put in a buddy system with the athletes to accommodate

the athlete with anything they need. Not only did they help the athlete

they also became their friend. This event was an amazing experience

not only for the accomplishments, but also the new friendships.

With her sweet

smile and gentle

disposition, Tiffany has

definitely started off the

new term with a bang.

Attending the last

general meeting, she

was one of the first

people to stand up and

participate in the

icebreaker that was

meant to get fellow

Key Clubbers to know

one another. Victory

was sweet for her and

her team as they won

one round of the telephone charade game.

She also volunteered at the annual Special

Olympics held at the CV track. Tiffany and her

comrade, Alli Meyer, spent the entire 6 hours under

the hot sun to cheer on and help their buddy par-

take in the various events. Tiffany is always seen as

being very helpful with a giving heart. I hope all fel-

low key clubbers take the time to get to know this

wonderful girl. She is a true representative starfish

who is firmly stuck on service.

Marianne has

been the smiling face

of Key Club ever

since I can remember.

With her endless

cheerful spirit, she

helps to have a posi-

tive look on even the

most stressful situation.

Marianne has main-

tained one of the

highest Key Club

hours in our school

ever since she joined

her freshmen year.

With her golden smile

she serves with a pas-

sion and dedication,

motivating not just her fellow members, but also her

peers. Marianne embodies all the heart and spirit of a

true Key Clubber and shows herself to be a true model

for service. Recently Marianne has stepped up in her

roll from our school's historian to take on the position as

our Bulletin Editor. Just with one look, her first bulletin

submission once again proved to me her unbelievable

level of devotion and compassion for Key Club as well

as her unbelievable talent for her position. On top of her

amazing submission, Marianne also earned one of the

highest service hours in what was probably one of the

most hectic months of her high school life. Even through

the busiest moments of her junior year, Marianne

proved to be a true Key Clubber and a responsible offi-

cer. I truly admire Marianne's unending commitment to

Key Club and know that she will always be the perfect

model for all the ideals Key Club represents.
