To Our Guests:

If you are new to Cityview, or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards (called “Connection Cards”) at the end of each aisle. These are a way for you to both communicate with us and to request information about Cityview. Connection cards come with a “no hassle” guarantee- we will not call you unless you specifically ask us. However, if you request information, the appropriate ministry leader will get in touch with you.

Our Purpose: You might be wondering, “Whatʼs this church all about?” At Cityview, we keep it simple: We are imperfect people that gather together in response to the grace of Jesus Christ. We are committed to worshiping God, loving each other well and serving the West Loop, the city of Chicago and the world.

The Easter Season

In the early Church the feast of Easter was established as the starting point in the development of the liturgical church year. The year as a whole receives its “Sunday” at Easter. Just as the first day of the week gives meaning and purpose to the weekly pattern of human life, so also the celebration of Easter in the Spring orients the entire year around the victorious resurrection of Christ for the life of the world. The early Church did not intend for this yearly pattern to replace or weaken the weekly Sunday worship of the church. Rather, the annual pattern was intended to enable the church to understand even better the mystery of Christʼs making all things holy, time included.

In the feast of Easter we celebrate the climax of God's redemptive story: Jesus Christ, God in flesh, came to dwell with us, died for us, and rose again from the dead. As the apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Corinthian church, this moment changes everything. If Christ did not rise from the dead, then "our faith is futile." But if he did rise from the dead, then we can take hope.

As N.T. Wright says,

"The point of the resurrection is not simply that the creator God has done something remarkable for one solitary individual (as people today sometimes imagine is the supposed thrust of the Easter proclamation), but that, in and through the resurrection, 'the present evil age' has been invaded by the 'age to come', the time of restoration, return, covenant renewal, and forgiveness. An event has occurred as a result of which the world is a different place, and human beings have the new possibility to become a different kind of people."

Prayers for Reflection: (These prayers are available for personal reflection and prayer during or after the service.)

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may

turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you – the true and living bread.

Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely and run with

perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever

dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared

hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserve in order

to offer me complete forgiveness. I know that you have been raised from the

dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be

undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If

what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of

who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and

that leads to the life you promise. Amen.

*Indicates congregation standing Preparing in Stillness: We often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we often are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read these reflections, look over the rest of the service, or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

Call to Worship: We need to be “called” to come and worship God be-cause we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas, and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

Order of Worship

Prelude Preparing in Stillness “What is beyond dispute is that Jesus of Nazareth is one of those perennial question marks in history with which mankind is never quite done. With a ministry of two or three years he attracted and infuriated his contemporaries, mesmerized and alienated the ancient world, unleashed a movement that has done the same ever since, and thus changed the course of history forever.”

-–J.P. Meier

GOD CALLS US

*Call to Worship From Psalm 118

Leader: Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; His love endures forever.

All: In our anguish we cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting us free.

Leader: Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; His love endures forever.

All: The LORD is our strength and our song; he has become our salvation.

Leader: We will not die but live, and will proclaim what the LORD has done.

All: Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; His love endures forever.

Leader: The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;

The LORD has done this; and it is marvelous in our eyes.

Leader: This is the day the LORD has made; All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

*Prayer of Adoration Leader: God of grace, you have given us minds to know you, hearts to love you, and

voices to sing your praise. Fill us with your Spirit that we may celebrate your glory and worship you in spirit and in truth through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

Confession of Sin: Because sin is so pervasive in

both our individual and corporate lives, we are called

to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for

both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We

confess corporately to show our unity even in our

brokenness.

GOD CLEANSES US *Call to Confession — John 11:25-26, NRSV

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

*Prayer of Confession All: Father in heaven, this week we continue to celebrate how you have raised

Jesus from the dead. You have brought life to our dying and decaying world. You have begun to heal everything that is broken. You have begun to heal us. We confess that we forget that you are inviting us to share in your victory. We focus instead on our failures and the failures of others. Because of this, we live as a despairing, cynical and critical people. Forgive us for forgetting this is your victory. Forgive us for trying to overcome by our own power. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Assurance of Grace: Christ has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his Name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

Worship Through Giving: Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that every- thing we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are just glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.

*Assurance of Grace From Acts 13:38; Ephesians 1:7 Leader: Through Jesus Christ forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.

In Christ we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. This is the good news.

All: Thanks be to God!

Leader: Brothers and Sisters, you have heard Godʼs holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?

All: We do. *Hymn of Comfort O Christ, Our King, Creator, Lord Words: Gregory the Great Music: Stephen Barnes

The Sermon: Some view the Sermon as a

way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore,

as you listen, pray to be open to the Spiritʼs leading,

exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

GOD SPEAKS TO US

Sermon Text Mark 6: 1-13 He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” 5 And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief.

And he went about among the villages teaching. 7 And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 9 but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10 And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.

Guidelines for Communion: Communion, also called the Lordʼs Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with His Church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament. Please note: we use wine. White grape Juice is in the center cups of the trays.

GOD STRENGTHENS US *Confession of Faith The Massai Creed

(Composed in 1960 by the Maasai people of East Africa, in collaboration with missionaries from the Congregation of the Holy Ghost, a Roman Catholic Congregation in Nigeria)

All: We believe in the one High God who out of love created the beautiful world

and everything good in it. He created man and wanted man to be happy in the world. God loves the world and every nation and tribe on the earth. We have known this High God in the darkness, and now we know him in the light. God promises in the book of his word, the Bible, that he would save the world and all the nations and tribes.

We believe that God made good his promise by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, a man in the flesh, a Jew by tribe, born poor in a little village, who left his home and was always doing good, curing people by the power of God, teaching about God and man, showing that the meaning of religion is love. He was rejected by his people, tortured and nailed hands and feet to a cross, and died. He rose from the grave. He ascended to the skies. He is Lord.

We believe that all our sins are forgiven through him. All who have faith in him must be sorry for their sins, be baptized in God, live the rules of love, and share the bread together in love, to announce the good news to others until Jesus comes again. We are waiting for him. He is alive. He lives. This we believe.

Prayer of Thanksgiving & Consecration

Communion Communion Hymn The Love of Christ is Rich and Free Words: William Gadsby Music: Sandra McCracken

Leader: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to our God. All: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

1. The love of Christ is rich and free; Fixed on His own eternally; Nor earth, nor hell, can it remove; Long as He lives, His own Heʼll love. 2. His loving heart engaged to be Their everlasting Surety; ʼTwas love that took their cause in hand, And love maintains it to the end. Chorus: Love cannot from its post withdraw; Nor death, nor hell, nor sin, nor law, Can turn the Suretyʼs heart away; Heʼll love His own to endless day.

3. Love has redeemed His sheep with blood; And love will bring them safe to God; Love calls them all from death to life; And love will finish all their strife. 4. He loves through every changing scene, Nor aught from Him can Zion wean; Not all the wanderings of her heart Can make His love for her depart. (Repeat chorus) 5. At death, beyond the grave, Heʼll love; In endless bliss, His own shall prove The blazing glory of that love Which never could from them remove.

Page 10: May 8, 2011

10

Communion Prayer All: Gracious God, we thank you for the love that brings us food from

heaven, gives us the life of your dear Son, and assures us that we belong to the company of all his faithful people in heaven and on earth. Grant that, strengthened by this fellowship and by the power of his Holy Spirit, we may continue his work in the world, until we come to the glory of your eternal kingdom; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

GOD COMMISSIONS US *Hymn of Benediction For the Beauty of the Earth Words: Folliot S. Pierpoint Music: Conrad Kocher

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.
