Sr. Francis Ennis was an Irish nun I had the good fortune to know many
years ago back in Dublin. She was the director of a small “nursery school,”
but a school with a difference. Many of the children there had been re-
ferred for care by the children’s courts, children’s welfare officers, or the
Gardai (Irish Police). To describe her as bossy, pushy, tyrannical, and a
force to be reckoned with would be an understatement. She was a true
dragon of a nun, but I have never come across a more devoted or truer advocate for children
and their parents. With the put-upon, the beaten, the outcast, the hurt child, the broken soul, she
was as gentle as a lamb. With the bully, the abuser, the violent, when it came to protecting chil-
dren and mothers, she was a lion. Sr. Francis was one of the best shepherds I have ever had the
privilege to know.
There are lots of different sorts of shepherds and Jesus chose this image to describe Himself and
those He placed in leadership over the Church - the pope, bishops, and priests. Men who were to
be willing to die, if necessary, to care for God’s sheep. Yet, as you are now tired of hearing me
say, the most important shepherds in our children’s lives are their parents. Protecting, feeding,
guiding, and even searching for the lost is all part of the life of the shepherd, and the parent.
Obviously, Sr. Francis didn’t have any children of her own. That didn’t matter, she was a shepherd
of other people’s children, and other people. This is the same for us also. Jesus calls us all to be
good shepherds and the good shepherd takes care of all the sheep not just his/her own. Being a
shepherd is a way of life, not a job. We are called to be shepherds. In fact, God sends us into the
world to be shepherds. A shepherd must be as fiery as a dragon, as strong as a lion, and as gen-
tle as a lamb. Not just for his own, but for the sake of all the sheep. What a great way to live a life.
Jesus, in a moment of sadness and empathy, said to His apostles, “I look around and I see the
people and they are like sheep without a shepherd.” It is my hope, one day, to commission for
our church a great painting of the Good Shepherd to remind us all of our calling and our mission.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
Today, we celebrate “Good
Shepherd Sunday” where we
reflect on Jesus’ care and love
of us and hear his words, “I
came so that they may have
life and have it more abun-
dantly.”
By your gift to the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul you will reveal
the love of the “Good Shep-
herd” to your suffering brothers
and sisters.
QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
REFLECT AND RESPOND TO THE SCRIPTURES
FIRST READING
Luke tells us that Peter often testified: “Save yourself from this
corrupt generation.” How is this message still applicable today?
SECOND READING
Peter asserts that the virtue of patience in one’s suffering is a
grace from God because Jesus modeled patient suffering. How
does the exercise of this spiritual disposition help bring peace of
mind?
GOSPEL READING
Using the metaphor of sheep and gatekeeper, Jesus teaches his
disciples the importance of remaining focused on his voice. Why
do you think people are so easily distracted from other voices?
Please show your support for
our parish by supporting our
advertisers. We wouldn’t be
able to bring you our bulletin
every week without them,
and right now they need
your help more than ever.
Please encourage and
remind others to show their
support and do business with
our advertisers during these
hard times.

EXTENSION OF PUBLIC MASS SUSPENSION
The Lord is
my shepherd;
there is nothing
I shall want.
(Psalm 23)
On April 28, 2020 the Catholic bishops of Ohio announced that
they are extending the suspension of public Mass through Friday,
May 29. We hope to begin once again celebrating public Mass
together beginning with the Solemnity of Pentecost the weekend
of May 30/31.
Each of the bishops of Ohio, once again, dispenses the Catholic
faithful who reside in their respective dioceses and all other Cath-
olics currently in their territories from the obligation of attending
Sunday Mass during this time. The bishops ask for the cooperation
and adherence of all the faithful to the governor’s directives dur-
ing this period.
Together we continue to pray for all who are suffering from
Covid-19, for all health care workers and first responders, for all
the deceased and their families, and for an easing of the anxiety
and tension caused by this pandemic. Relying on the Motherly
care of Our Lady, Health of the Sick, we unite our sufferings to
those of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and we trust in the glorious hope of
