From the Pastor Dear Parishioners: Each spring for many years the Little Sisters of the Poor have come to the parish to speak on behalf of their residents at the Jeanne Jugan Home in the Bronx and ask for our support. Their particular ministry is dedicated to providing a dignified place where the elderly poor, who have no other means of support, can spend their final years. As the median age of the population is growing and people tend to live longer there is no shortage of applicants for admission. Much of the day-to-day work is done by the sisters themselves assisted by a dedicated lay staff and volunteers. Because we were closed last spring the sisters could not come for their annual visit. This year because of ongoing covid concerns and the desire of the sisters not to burden parishioners who have their own financial struggles they have opted once again not to come and make a public appeal. While their decision is well reas0ned and credible it does not help them in the work that they are doing nor somehow bridge the gap between their income and expenses. As they rely on literally “begging” for their residents, other forms of support have had to be developed. To this end they have compiled a Wish List of everyday items that they can use. The Knights of Columbus have agreed to help gather these items and transport them to the sisters. We are looking to do all this on the weekend of May 15-16. All you will need to do is bring an item with you when you come to Mass and drop it in the back of the church. Working together we can have a great impact. These are the items that are being requested if you can help. Only these items please: BODY WASH, DOVE SOAP, TISSUES/KLEENEX, COPY PAPER,
INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED SNACKS AND CANDY, PAPER CUPS,
PLATES, NAPKINS, HEAVY DUTY PLASTIC KNIVES, FORKS, SPOONS, CVS GIFT CARDS FOR RESIDENTS’ BIRTHDAYS. Sincerely,
Rev. Robert J. DeJulio, Pastor
