Another month has passed and more exciting Jaguars events are scheduled, but It would be very remiss of me not to mention Flow Jaguar of Winston Salem NC for their wonderful hospitality in hosting our April buffet lunch meeting at the Winston Salem downtown Marriott Hotel. On behalf of the Carolina Jaguar Club I wish to express a sincere thank you to Mr. Don Flow, Jason Keraven, and Lou Ann Pacula of Flow Jaguar. We had approximately 30 Jaguars present and over 60 people attended; some of course were not club members, a great time was had by all. On Friday May 13 2013 Linda and I drove down in our 2002 XJR to St Augustine Florida to represent, together with Ted Hill, the CJC in the JCCNF CONCOURS. Needless to say we hit rain at the Georgia border and it did not stop until Sunday late morning. I could write a book on all the happenings on Saturday, it was the freakiest day I have ever spent any were PERIOD. However it was a lot of fun and we took first place with a score of 9.996 against 3 other cars. Ted Hill also did well with his XK8 earning a second place. I Trust that you all have registered for our own concours in Little Switzerland, my thanks to Harvey for getting all the registration organized. Please remember to support your club and Leith Jaguar in Cary NC at our next meeting on June 8 2013. June the 12‐16 marks a big weekend for the JCNA and all its affiliated clubs with the 2013 Challenge Championship, Wyndham Virginia Crossings Hotel, Richmond Virginia, and I hope to see many of you there.. BETSY Continued. At the JCCNF CONCOURS in St Augustine, FL I was pleased to see a rare sight, an XJ40 was entered in D07 it was a 1991 Regency Red, the gentleman said he had owned it for just over a year and yes he had gray hair but loved his car. Betsy is still behaving herself at 128,000 miles and just loves to be driven, I must admit too, that I

am falling in love with the 90‐94 Jaguar XJ40 Models. They are great drivers, comfortable, easy of ingress and egress and of course there is that bullet proof wonderful DOHC Jaguar 4.0 LTR in line six engine. Betsy recently required a driver’s side blower assembly which we purchased from Coventry West at a list price of $475 and a core charge of $150.00 making the total cost for the part of $325.00 we now have cold air at our house tonight. XJ40 Bodies tear up both front and rear door seals for some reason, they are easy to find and purchase for not too much money but very difficult to replace. The fronts are done but I feel that the rears will be left to a professional as it’s hard on ones thumbs. Parts are abundant for the Jaguar XJ40 as sadly many of them languish in breakers yards or fell into non Jaguar enthusiast hands who abandoned them at the first sign of trouble, very sad . Betsy’s next refurbishment will be in the form of two new rear sub frame bushings about a three hour job which I know Chris at Foreign Accents can handle well, we will also do an oil change with a Mann Filter and 8 quarts of 20w50 Castrol oil. Now if only I can stop that oil leak! Betsy I am pleased to announce now has a new stable mate, a 1992 XJ40 VDP in Oyster with Magnolia Interior, and 83000 mile showing on the clock. These cars were badged Daimlers in the rest of the world, however, Jaguar had to fall back on the Vanden Plas model name in the USA. The car was a Daimler in all but name and in a five year period 1990‐1994 total production was 8876 units that’s just 1775 units a year, in the UK a 1992 Daimler would empty your bank account to the tune of 44,300 UK Pounds. The Daimler and Vanden Plas names as used by Jaguar could fill a history book and would make for some very interesting reading. Did you know that WHAT CAR? Magazine voted the XJ40 THE BEST LUXURY CAR for 1992 against some stiff competition from Mercedes and Lexus. The XJ40 also won again in 1993. Let’s hear about your favorite Jaguar. I am certain our editor of The Litter Box would welcome your story. Keep it between the lines…

David and Ted’s Soggy Adventure

By Ted Hill Welcome to sunny south Florida, enjoy the beach, golfing, a British car show, a Jaguar concours: well maybe not. We left the Charlotte area on a cloudy Thursday morning with a watchful eye on the weather, 40% to 50% chance of rain was the forecast over the weekend. We began picking up rain half way through South Carolina and by the time we got to St. Augustine that evening the rain had intensified and the forecast was worsening. Roads in St. Augustine began to flood and the winds were a constant 15 to 20 mph. Friday the St. Augustine area received eight inches of rain with the forecast of more rain until Sunday morning. That evening, registration pickup and a meet and greet was held at the Comfort Suites Hotel located in the World Golf Village in St. Augustine with a nice BBQ buffet. On Saturday morning an alternate route had to be planned from the hotel to St. Francis Field, where the concours was to be held, as many of the streets on the original route were now flooded. There was a light mist in the air, but the field had drained and was still suited for the British car show and the concours. When we arrived at the field David and I headed to the only water hose available for a quick car wash. As soon as we had

Ron Bennett Dies By Jim Morton

Long‐time Carolina Jaguar Club member Ron Bennett, 68, of Hick‐ory, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hos‐pice. He was born December 25, 1944, in Sharon, PA., and a Penn State graduate. He was a Jaguar enthusiast, and at one time owned the 1949 Jaguar Mark V sedan now owned by Norm Parrish.

Ron and wife Karen were charter members of the South‐east Jaguar Owners Club in 1989, and one of the found‐ing officers of the Carolina Jaguar Club when it was reor‐ganized in 1991‐2. Bob Wasson recalls that Ron wrote the charter and the by‐laws. He was our treasurer in 1995 and a past Regional Director of JCNA in the late 1990s. Ron was one of 3 founders of Hi‐Tech Fuses, Inc. from

1983 – 2006. Hi‐Tech makes fuses big enough to protect power transformer stations, if not cities, 50,000 amps worth (Your house uses 15 or 20 amp devices). He once described to me the problems of finding sites where he could create short circuits of that magnitude without shutting down cities. He had to go to France to find a workable site. Ron and Karen enjoyed their travels throughout the world, but his favorite place to be was Bluff Mountain, a 2,000‐acre nature preserve in Ashe County. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, which he shared with his grandson and inspired in him the love for both as well. Memorials may be made to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658 or National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), P.O. Box 530 Edgefield, SC 29824‐0530 or Catawba Science Center, 243 3rd Ave., NE, Hickory, NC 28601. Ron's most admirable qualities were his loyalty, love and honesty. In his family and circle of friends, if someone needed help, Ron was there. Period. A good friend. We will all miss him dearly.

washed our cars it began to rain again, onto plan “B”. Prior permission had been given to the Jaguar club to use the parking deck adjacent to St. Francis Field if it became necessary. As the rain persisted it was evident the parking deck was inevitable. At the cost of $10 per car ($390, North Florida Jaguar Club pick up the tab) we all proceeded to the third floor of the park deck and once again started wiping our cars down. As the cars were being prepared and the judging began, two police cars showed up to inform us that we could park our cars, but could not assemble. Instead of pressing the point and ending up in jail, we politely packed up our cars and back out into the rain for the hotel. David and I agreed, we had been kicked out of a lot of places but never a parking garage. Given our situation and the rain not forecast to

stop, the hotel was kind enough to allow the judging to be completed under the portico in front of the hotel. The judging team did an outstanding job in less than ideal conditions. Saturday evening came and we were all looking forward to a nice uneventful (weather wise) awards banquet and silent auction at the King and Bear Country Club, World Golf Village. The net proceeds of the event and the silent auction went to benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children. The keynote speaker for the evening was Dick Maury, president JCNA. As we were eating our meal we could see through the large glass windows overlooking the golf course dark and ominous clouds with torrential rains approaching. The lights suddenly went out and civil defense alerts began popping up on cell phones, “Emanate Danger, seek shelter immediately.” A micro‐burst was in progress and tornados were sighted in the area with hail in the mix.

After passage of the micro‐burst and not being struck by a tornado the evenings event resumed in the dark. Dick Maury gave his keynote speech using cell phones a flashlights so notes could be seen and awards could be presented. David placed first in his class with a score of 9.996 and I placed second in my class with a 9.999. Thankfully our Jaguars survived the evening without damage from the severe weather. Sunday morning came, the rain stopped and clouds began to break. David and Linda headed south to Vero Beach and Sindy and I headed back to North Carolina. On the way to Vero Beach David and Linda ran into the once a year May fly (love bugs) mating season and Sindy and I ran into more rain. By the time we got to our destinations the cars needed washing “yet again.” Congratulations for a job well done to Ian Massey (Concours Chair) and his team. Many times they were working on plan B, C, and D simultaneously. They made it happen under difficult circumstances and I commend them. I look forward to returning next year, can’t wait to see how they top this one. (Photos from Jaguar Club of North Florida)

JUDGE'S CORNER BRIAN MYERSCOUGH Chief Judge Spring is here, believe it or not and it has certainly not been the type of weather to tempt you outside to clean up the Jag, but the time is coming when we will have no option as show time is just around the corner. I was thinking the other day of how in the " good ?" old days we would spend hours and hours and lots of elbow grease polishing our cars with carnauba wax based prod‐ucts, then stand back and proudly survey that deep lus‐trous shine. Now of course we have such a wide range of spray and wipe products, which to my aging eyes are just as effective, but do we get that same exhilarating feeling of a job well done? Just a thought! Some of you will be entering your cars in our Concours for the first time and this should be an enjoyable experi‐ence. You will find your fellow competitors more than willing to answer any questions you may have , but most important is that you go to the JCNA .com website, click on CONCOURS and read through CHAPTER IV Instructions and Rules for the Entrant.

So many times I get appeals after the show saying "I didn't know I had to have that" or “ No one told me I had to display a front license bracket even though we don’t have a front license plate.” So please do as I did in the Boy Scouts seventy years ago, tying reef knots and cooking flapjacks on the camp fire, BE PREPARED and GOOD LUCK

Concours d’ Elegance at Pinehurst in Photo Review

Show Photos by Chila Wilce, Article by Jerry Cohen

While David Hayden and Ted Hill were battling the forces of nature in liquid form in Florida a contingent of CJC Club members took to Pinehurst North Carolina for the inau‐gural Pinehurst Concours d’ Elegance on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 –5. Three of the many CJC Jerrys showed up, Jerry Tester, Jerry Ellison, Jerry Cohen, Judi Cohen, Doug Wilce, Chila Wilce, Tom Parsons. Sandy Parsons, Frank Zamaroni, Joan Zamoroni , and John Robinson and Tony Robinson. There may have been more, but since this was not an official club meeting event I did not see every‐one.

Doug, John and I attended the auction held on Saturday by Charlotte Headquartered RK Motors. 28 cars were sold for $2 million dollars or $70,000 per car average. Some cars had no reserve and sold for what I consider a bar‐

Carolina Jaguar Club Concours

HEAD FOR THE MOUNTAINS

July 18‐21, 201

Head for the Mountains with the Carolina Jaguar Club for its 2013 Concours in the lovely Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. This is a sanctioned JCNA concours event, judged by rules at www.jcna.com.

The Concours is held at the Switzerland Inn in Little Swit‐zerland, North Carolina. The Switzerland Inn offers a lovely setting on the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is just a few hundred yards from the Blue Ridge Park‐way near mile post 334. There is a 100% chance of cooler temperatures at this mountain top location versus what you will be experiencing down in the “flatlands” in July! Check out www.Switzerlandinn.com for more infor‐mation about the Inn. The Carolina Jaguar Club has held their annual JCNA sanctioned Concours at the Switzerland Inn for several years now and has a full range of activities to offer. If you plan to arrive on Thursday evening, you can join other attendees at a Thursday night cookout. Meet old friend and make new ones. On Friday we are featuring a new event, the “Mystery Drive”. Participants will start leaving the Switzerland Inn in their Jaguars about 9 a.m., following a set of direc‐tions. The morning drive will take you through the beau‐tiful Pisgah National Forest and past rural farms of the Blue Ridge Mountains for several hours. While you drive you will watch for answers to a series of questions pro‐vided with your route directions to our secret luncheon

destination. Prizes? Of course! A wonderful luncheon buffet is planned. The buffet includes pulled pork BBQ, lemon herb chicken, baked beans, mac and cheese, cole slaw, breads, and fruit cobbler. After lunch, we have a croquet demonstration planned, followed by a return to the Inn along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Scheduling will allow you plenty of time Friday afternoon to prepare your car for Saturday’s concours. Friday evening join us on the patio for a sponsored cock‐tail party. Afterwards, you may wish to join us as we try out the Switzerland Inn’s Prime Rib and Seafood Buffet. This is an informal get together. A cash bar will be avail‐able. Following dinner, there will be a general interest presentation regarding Jaguar cars. Saturday is our main event, the Concours. A detailed schedule is attached. Entrants should note that washing stations will be provided both Friday afternoon and Sat‐urday morning. The show field will be open to the gen‐eral public with no entry charge on Saturday. For Satur‐day lunch, a buffet of cold cuts will be available or order à la carte in the Switzerland Inn restaurant. Also during the day Saturday, there will be a Silent Auc‐tion. A number of items will be available for you to bid on. Proceeds from the Silent Auction will benefit our Concours Sponsored Charity, USO of North Carolina. Every JCNA member who attends the show on Saturday will be able to cast their vote for the Isabel Parish Memo‐rial People’s Choice car award. Saturday evening everyone is encouraged to sign up for our gala banquet and awards ceremony, which will be preceded by a sponsored cocktail party. New this year, we are going to serve our Saturday banquet dinner buf‐fet style. The buffet will feature Chef’s Carved beef and pork tenderloin, Bourbon Pecan trout, “Hoppin’ John” chicken, various vegetables, salads, potatoes, rice, and desserts. We will announce the winners in the various Concours categories, as well as the People’s Choice winner. Our Trophy Sponsor is Scott Jaguar. Sunday attendees are on their own to spend the day as they wish. You won’t want to sleep in too late, as there are some great twisty and scenic driving roads in the area that beg to be explored in your Jaguar. The Little

gain. For instance a 1973 VW Super Beetle convertible just off a fresh restoration with a new 1600 engine, just about new everything sold for $8500. A 1976 Cadillac El Dorado convertible in triple white, also off of a $36,000 restoration sold for $20,000.

Sunday threatened rain, was cool and windy, but Doug, Chila, their granddaughter Lara (just in for a visit from London), and Judi and I took to the field to review the 118 cars celebrating 118 years of Pinehurst. Below are photos from Chila . First we have Doug and granddaugh‐ter Lara who flew in for Doug’s *% birthday.

The trophy table, how about that Harvey!

A custom bodied V12 Lincoln Zephyr sedan that an American industrialist of Scottish decent had shipped with him every time he visited Scotland.

A 1910 Oakland was one of many Brass Age cars on this display.

A 1953 Chrysler New Yorker convertible with Highland Plaid interior driven in from Fayetteville. Check out the matching cape on the owners wife..

Pinehurst (Continued)

This next car was one of 6 known to exist and was owned by Richard Taylor of Lumberton. Mr. Taylor said he has a collection of 35 cars that has been slowly reduced down from 50. This is a 1936 Stout Scarab. Designed and built by an air plane designer that helped design the Ford Tri –engine plane. He used a rear mounted water cooled 1936 Ford flathead V8 of 85 HP. It looked like the first mini van inside.

Next is a 1939 Ford Woody wagon. Always a favorite of the termite group.

We moved on to more contemporary cars and also saw a display of Holman Moody Racing vehicles that included a Ford GT40 among other cars.

Porsche had new cars available for test drives out in the parking lot. Foreign Cars Italia has a display of Aston Mar‐tins and Maserati models and of course a selection of Ferrari sports cars and GT models. They were also selling paraphernalia for the above mentioned marques.

Next we saw a 1955 Dodge Royal Custom Lancer owned by Mike Peterson of Raleigh.

Then one of my personal favorites, a 1957 Ford Thun‐derbird owned by Gary and Nancy Lester of Mooresville, NC. A great color combination not often seen on these last of the 2 seater Birds.

We ended the show with no rain (take that David and Ted). Then it was on to more important things like warmth and food. Here are Doug Wilce and his grand‐daughter Lara Newton toasting to a great morning.

Can you see the family resemblance.

Tech Section: Where did the dipstick go??

By Jerry Cohen

Where did the dip stick go is not about the guy your daughter is currently dating. I am talking about the good old dipstick you would ordinarily use to check oil level and condition in your Jaguar or any lesser car. In August as many of you know Judi and I purchased a 2012 Jaguar XF from Scott Jaguar. It has the new 5.0 liter V8 engine and has “NO” dipstick. So how on earth do I check the oil. That is not the only thing different, it has synthetic oil which means the factory recommends a 15,000 mile change interval. WHAT! Go 15,000 miles and not be able to pull out the dipstick to see if any oil is left! This is hard for me to contemplate when I usually change oil at 3000 miles regardless of factory recommendations. So I take our XF into Scott at 7500 miles (not 15,000) for its first oil change. I ask the tech if I could watch the pro‐cedure since this is an unconventional (to me) process. I also asked him to point out the missing dipstick. Richy (last name left out to protect his identity) said it did not have one because it had an internal oil monitoring sys‐tem. Oh! He said to let the car sit for 10 minutes, open the hood (not to get the dipstick, because if you haven’t figured it out by now...it doesn’t have one). The raised hood tells the computer you want to do a virtual oil check. Then with the ignition in accessory position hit the button on the end of the turn signal switch and click through until you see oil. It looks like this.

So here is how the oil change is done. No up on a lift, no pulling the drain plug, no unscrewing the filter from un‐der the engine and throwing it away. Nope nothing like

that.

First they raise the hood and take the oil filler cap off. In the middle is a very visible small tube .

Then they attach a tube to this tube . It is attached to a liq‐uid extractor ma‐chine which when turned on sucks the old oil out of the car. It has a clear tank so you can see the volume of oil removed and the condition. This re‐places draining the oil from the crank case on a lift. The oil filter is on top of the engine and has a canister that unscrews and

comes off revealing a filter element that is thrown away and re‐placed. The canister is then screwed back in place. The only thing they do that used to be done before is refill the crank case by pouring oil in one can at a time until full. It is clean, simple, and can’t be done at home unless you own one of these machines designed just for this car.
