LitterEach class helps keep our school groundslitter free.

We have a litter rota posted on our GreenSchools Notice Board. Each classroomhas a copy of the rota too.The rota for thewhole year is done out each September. This saves ink, paper and photocopying.

It takes just a few minutes every day toclear away the litter and it makes a bigdifference.

Our Code is “All pitch in and use the bin”.

WasteIn Scoil Mhuire, our waste is separated. Before taking part in Green Schools, allour waste went to landfill.

Each room in our school has three bins. One is for recyclable materials, another isfor compostable waste and the third is forgeneral waste.

The recyclables bin and the compostcaddy are clearly labelled.

We have a “Rate my Bin” system. At theend of each month, a prize is awarded tothe class best at separating its waste.

We bring home our non-recyclable lunchwaste.

We encourage everyone to use alunchbox.

Photocopying Before taking part in Green Schools, allphotocopying done in our school wassingle-sided.

Now we try our best to do as muchdouble-sided photocopying as we can.

Having interactive whiteboards in eachclassroom has made a huge difference tothe amount of photocopying being done.

Our photocopier goes into energy savermode when not in use.

Our photocopying results are posted on our Green Schools Notice Board

CompostingWe wanted to divert our food waste fromlandfill.

We installed two composters. They were sited ina side shrubbery, adjacent to the front of theschool.

We composted fruit and vegetable waste, teabags and pencil parings. We did not put in meator cooked food waste as this would attractrodents.

We bring home any leftover lunch. This meansour parents can check what we have eaten!

We are replacing our composters with threeGreen Cones. They will enjoy full sun in the rosebed.

A green cone is a food digester!! It will eatcooked food as well as fish and meat. We hopethe roses enjoy their new diet!
