KAIKORAI PRIMARY SCHOOL N e w s l e t t e r A very special welcome to Rhys Beattie, Johnny Kaan, Oliver Devereux and their families to Kaikorai Primary School! PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Bullying happens in all aspects of our community and obviously it is an issue for all schools. How we deal with it is the most important factor. At Kaikorai Primary School we endeavour to be proactive rather than reactive. We are lucky that bullying at Kaikorai is not a huge issue, but from time to time we do have incidents. The most important thing we can do is to encourage our children to talk about what has happened. If we don’t know we can’t help your child and more importantly help the child who may be struggling socially. Today’s Pink Shirt Day highlighted the importance that we can all do something about bullying and telling somebody is the most important step. Thank you to all the families who have supported the Pink Shirt Day. Your contribution to the Chatbus is most appreciated and we hope that one day soon we will have the services of the Chatbus at Kaikorai Primary School. Another area of national importance is our children’s health. I am pleased to announce that Kaikorai Primary School will be involved in the roll out of Fonterra’s milk to school programme. Every child in the school will be offered a free milk every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to have while they are reading and recovering from their busy lunchtime. More details will follow in the next few weeks. Kind regards, Simon Clarke

KAIKORAI PRIMARY SCHOOL
N e w s l e t t e rA very special welcome to Rhys Beattie, Johnny Kaan, Oliver
Devereux and their families to Kaikorai Primary School!
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEBullying happens in all aspects of our community and
obviously it is an issue for all schools. How we deal with it
is the most important factor. At Kaikorai Primary School
we endeavour to be proactive rather than reactive. We are lucky that
bullying at Kaikorai is not a huge issue, but from time to time we do have
incidents. The most important thing we can do is to encourage our
children to talk about what has happened. If we don’t know we can’t
help your child and more importantly help the child who may be
struggling socially.
Today’s Pink Shirt Day highlighted the importance that we can all do
something about bullying and telling somebody is the most important
step. Thank you to all the families who have supported the Pink Shirt
Day. Your contribution to the Chatbus is most appreciated and we hope
that one day soon we will have the services of the Chatbus at Kaikorai
Primary School.
Another area of national importance is our children’s health. I am
pleased to announce that Kaikorai Primary School will be involved in the
roll out of Fonterra’s milk to school programme. Every child in the
school will be offered a free milk every Monday, Wednesday and Friday
to have while they are reading and recovering from their busy lunchtime.
The senior classes have had a great start to the term. Children have enjoyed seeing their friends again, and have settled nicely back into class routines. We are all talking about the movie that will feature every child in the school. We have brainstormed options of lands, story lines and characters. Eventually, through processes including negotiation and democracy, we have finalised our class focuses. This will form a large part of our learning programmes this term, as we delve into narrative writing, characterisation and forming plots.Just now we are enjoying a science topic about Light and Sound. This is a physics topic that includes lots of experiments and internet activities, developing concepts about these areas. The children are enjoying our different approach of swapping classes around our syndicate, rotating and working with a different teacher each day.
Middle NewsA group of children visited Chrissy at the OpShop on Carroll St as part of their inquiry investigating the question for ongoing conversation: “People make a difference - can we make a difference?” Chrissy is coming to talk with the Middle Syndicate children on Thursday next week and is happy to take any donations of clean clothing that you no longer require. You could bring them to R3 next week or drop them off at the Shop on Carroll. Little things can make a big difference and every little bit helps.
On Tuesday the children from the Middle Syndicate will be at the Edgar Centre working with many different people and participating in six different sports.
Junior NewsWelcome back to a busy term the children are refreshed and ready to learn and this is great to see. This term we are focusing on making our part of the whole school movie. Each class is developing their ideas and will be ready to film their 3- minute segment by the end of the term. For topic each class will look at a different type of INVENTION as part of our ASPIRATION focus. Talk to your child so they can share with you the wonderful learning going on in their classrooms. Learning / sharing conversations are an important part of you finding out what happens at school each day.PMP has begun and so has Fun Friday and as usual we encourage you to come along and help we are often short of helpers. Room 9, 12, and 8 have student teachers working with the children this week and next week. You will have received a notice about our Junior Reading information evening next Thursday 23rd at 7.00 in Room 12. Please come along and hear how we teach your children to read and the part you can play in this stage of their learning. Each teacher will talk about a different component of our reading programme. It would be great to see most of our Junior parents come along.A reminder that school entry time is 8.30am so please don’t send your child too early. Also for those children consistently coming to school at 9.00 (or later) please consider that their days starts a lot better when they have time to socialise before school. Our prime learning time is the morning when children are fresh and not tired. Our transition to school programme Kaikorai Kiwis has begun for the term if your child isn’t attending yet and is due to start school in the next 2 -3 terms please enrol and come along our next session is Wednesday 29th.

SCHOOL NEWS
Leon Beaman from Westpac presents Principal Simon Clarke a payment of $250 to help with the schools ongoing fundraising.
Under the “Refer a Friend” scheme that is run by Leon Beaman at Westpac, Dunedin North Branch, any new Home Loan customers that mention they are friends of Kaikorai Primary, would see the school receive a donation of $250, as well as receive a $250 payment themselves.
“It has been great to support Simon and his team further the excellent work they do for our children inside and outside of the classroom. I understand the time and energy it can take to fundraise through the likes of a sausage sizzle, and am happy I can do a little something to help. I have really enjoyed helping one of our Kaikorai school families into their new Dunedin Home recently and I look forward to the chance to assist others as well” said Mr Beaman.
Walking School BusThe Walking School Bus is proving to be very popular again this year with good numbers of children walking each day.
The Walking School Bus con=nues to operate through the autumn and winter months. Please note, though, that if there is ever a late school start =me due to ice or snow, then there will not be a Walking School Bus that day.
Everyone is welcome to use the Walking School Bus which leaves from the corner of Highgate and Belgrave Crescent (just along from Roslyn Kindergarten) each school morning at 8.20am. Children can also join the bus along the way. If you’d like to try out the Walking School Bus just come along one morning.
PARENT GROUP NEWSENTERTAINMENT BOOKSThe Entertainment Book fundraiser is nearly all wrapped up with just a couple of Books s=ll to be returned. We’ve sold 165 Entertainment Books which is fantas=c and a number of parents who didn’t want to purchase a Book or who had bought one elsewhere made a dona=on which was much appreciated. All of this means that we’ve made a profit of $1,987.50 (which is just slightly more than last year). A huge thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser. The winner of the Hoyts movie passes will be announced very soon!
SAUSAGE SIZZLE – PINK SHIRT DAYA record number of sausages were ordered for today’s Pink Shirt Day Sausage Sizzle which will raise around $700 for the Chat Bus. A big thank you to everyone who has supported this and a special thank you to the parents who helped at the Sausage Sizzle – it’s quite an opera=on cooking and serving just under 500 sausages within a =ght =meframe!
TOILET PAPER FUNDRAISERWe will be selling Toilet Paper as a fundraiser again this year. We’ve done this for many years now and it’s always incredibly popular. More informa=on and an order form will be sent home very soon but here are some details in the mean=me. The Toilet Paper comes in packs of 45 rolls and costs $20 per pack. For every pack sold the Kaikorai School Parents Group makes $8. You can order the toilet paper packs for yourself, but also collect orders from extended family, neighbours, friends, work colleagues, etc.
NEXT PARENTS GROUP MEETINGThere will be another reminder closer to the =me, but just an early no=fica=on that the next Parents Group mee=ng will be on Tuesday 11 June at 2pm in the staff room. Everyone is very welcome to abend.
INTERNET PAYMENTSThe use of the internet to pay for Parents Group fundraisers is proving to be very popular and already it’s been used by a large number of families. Please note, though, that the Parents Group and the School have separate bank accounts so whenever you’re making an internet payment make sure that you deposit the money into the correct account. Thanks.
If you have any ques=ons or you would like more informa=on about the Parents Group, then please contact Tor Devereux (453-‐1108, 027-‐635-‐1512, [email protected]).
