(NC)—Architects, builders and energy experts call the goal ‘net zero’. It represents a building that has been con-structed in such an energy-effi cient way—with methods and materials—it is able to produce, on site, as much en-ergy as it uses over the course of a year.
“By pushing construction effi ciency and energy gen-erating abilities to the limit, various pilot projects are al-ready proving it can be done,” says Todd Blyth at Nudura, a leading Canadian manufacturer of insulated concrete wall forms. “The fi rst net-zero achievable school opened its doors last year south of the border, and more are un-derway.
“Even now, the materials you choose can make a big difference to the overall effi ciency of your new home,” Blyth explained.
“If you want the highest performance, be sure to pay close attention to decisions for the walls, windows, roof-ing, ventilation and indoor climate control. Those features in particular assist in the goal to completely offset energy
consumption.”Nudura walls are in demand for this reason, says Blyth,
explaining that their concrete system is replacing the tra-ditional – but ineffi cient and unsustainable – wood framemethod. The far more durable system is known to build-ers as ICFs, or insulated concrete forms.
“Our ICFs consist of pre-assembled panels, each onestacked, reinforced, and then fi lled with concrete,” Blythexplains. “Once locked together (like Lego) this systemcreates a solid, monolithic wall which is reported to be upto nine times stronger, with far more fi re protection andwith far more sound insulation and occupant comfort. This is Canadian technology and our method is the onethey want for net-zero projects in the United States.”
Solid concrete walls—alongside solar generation, geo-thermal heating and cooling, plus positioning your hometo take advantage of natural light— are just a few of thefeatures already available in the goal to net-zero.
More details are available online at www.nudura.com.

(NC)—Building a house from the ground up gives the homeowner total quality control— and this is especially important for structural energy effi ciency. Decision-mak-ing is a big job however, so you might want to start with a guideline from the non-profi t organization Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). By developing a rating system, the LEED for Homes division promotes high-performance houses that use energy effi cient con-struction materials. For example, some of the highest rat-ed homes and buildings use a concrete system, not wood, for building walls – and it’s a Canadian company, Nudura, that leads in this fi eld. The system uses pre-assembled ICFs (insulated concrete forms) which, at the construc-tion site, lock in together a little like Lego. Concrete has shown to deliver a stronger, safer, healthier, and a more cost effi cient house, according to the company (nudura.com). Furthermore, LEED reminds us that a green home will: use less energy, water and natural resources; create less waste; and be healthier and more comfortable for the occupants. Industry specialists also say that this method has the capability of delivering up to 70 per cent energy savings as compared to traditional wood framing.

(NC)—No matter what your personality, there are manysimple ways to infuse your garden with unique style.
MINIMALIST APPROACH—Go for clean lines and carefully composed arrangements of rocks, moss, prunedtrees and bushes. Tall grasses and gravel, or sand path-ways will also add to the Zen feel, along with a medita-tive water feature like the Angelo Décor Pietra Falls slatefountain with pump. To fi nish the look, add solar LED rocklights that add function while blending into the foliage.
COLOUR, COLOUR, COLOUR—Set the mood andshowcase your personality with plants in your favouritehues. Use two or three adjacent colours to create a har-monious effect (red and orange) or create contrast withunexpected combinations of three, like purple, greenand orange. Ensure careful planning when using thecolour wheel and check with your garden centre special-ists to confi rm you’re choosing the right blooms.
ECO-FRIENDLY—Native garden plants have adapted to their environment and offer greater resistance to dis-eases and pests than imported options—this means lesscare and water required. If indigenous gardening is onyour radar there are many Canadian plants to considerthat are beautiful and require less maintenance. Theseinclude Bergamot, Columbine, Purple Conefl ower, BlueIris, and Crocus. Find out which plants are suited to yourzone, and let nature work for you.

Home owners have a diffi cult decision to make whenthe time comes to sell their house: sell at a competitiveprice without renovating or invest in some improvementsin order to sell at a higher price? Without any major reno-vating, some basic repairs and modifi cations can consoli-date the value of your house.
Start by taking care of your kitchen and bathrooms.A fresh look can be given to your cabinets by changingall the handles and knobs. Light fi xtures can also be re-placed: choose a ceiling light with three or fi ve lights inorder to brighten up a hallway, and use directional lightsin the kitchen and lights fi tted with dimmers in the liv-ing room and the bedrooms. A coat of varnish or even anew wood stain on your fl oors can raise the value of yourproperty. Do the same with all the woodwork, the windowframes, and stair railings. Repair dripping faucets or shab-by sinkware and replace out-of-date water heaters.
Don’t be afraid to invest at least 1 percent of the saleprice of your home on small improvements. However smallthey may be, these jobs can turn out to be very profi table, especially in the kitchen and the bathrooms. Indeed, byinvesting $2,000, you can probably hope to add between$1,500 and $2,000 to the sale price. On the other hand, ifyou don’t invest this money you may have to lower yourprice by more than $5,000.
Renovating to sell
The math is simple: be ready to invest 1 per-cent of the sale price in improvements to your home. You’re guaranteed to come out a winner!

(NC)—Water is a precious resource, and we are told that during the summer months municipal water use dou-bles. By taking action at home you can waste less water, cause less stress on the treatment and distribution system and save money.
Much of the heavy water use during summer comes from the increase in outdoor activities. Here are some tips to begin using outdoor water wisely:
• Less is more when it comes to watering your lawn—two or three centimeters once a week is plenty. For best results, water early in the morning before 9, to avoid evaporation.
• Consider using native plants in the garden; they re-quire less water and are more resistant to local plant dis-eases.
• Collect rainwater from your roof and use this water for your lawn or garden. Garden specialists tell us that rain water is actually better for plants because it does not contain chlorine.

(NC)—The most beautiful patios – those we see in magazines and fantasize about for our own backyards – are treated with the same attention as the rest of the house. The layouts are carefully considered, they have a sitting area, eating area and a cooking area. The colour scheme is coordinated and transitions from the adjacent interior to the outdoors so there is a seamless fl ow.
It’s easy to make and maintain your own idyllic patio, by considering the following tips from Award-winning interior decorator Laura Stein.
Bring the indoors out
Create a com-fortable and inti-mate living area by choosing fur-niture that would look just as good indoors as out, and arrange it for
conversation or to maxi-mize the view.Accessorize the space
No space is completewithout accessories, so ac-cessorize your patio with elements found in nature. Use potted plants and fl ow-ers of different sizes, tones and textures arranged in groupings for variety and interest. Consider adding a water feature, such as a fountain or a pond.

DÉCOR TIPS:(NC)—The superior strength and
beauty of granite is ideal for indoor decor, especially for countertops and sinks. Kitchen upgrades can be such a luxurious affair.
Shopping for a granite sink, how-ever, requires certain considerations if you want the very best performance, say experts in this fi eld.
Beauty won’t be in short supply, of course. Granite is a stunner. Durabil-ity probing requires your attention however. Be sure to fi nd out which granite sink will best stand up to vig-orous daily function—and ask for the best antibacterial and stain-resistant surface too.
It’s worth keeping in mind that granite is igneous rock and when quarried, it naturally consists of quartz and feldspar. For top-tier durability, experts say, the granite should in-clude a high quartz component com-bined with acrylic.
“For example, you will see that around 80 per cent of the material
used in the Cristadur sink is quartz, the hardest constituent of granite,” says John Pearce at leading distribu-tor, Novanni. “When combined with high-grade acrylic it produces an ide-al composite material that is resistant to scratches, cracks, germs and dirt. Cristadur is the smoothest granite product on the market which makes it a snap to keep clean—and it is an-tibacterial.”
SHOP AND COMPARE:• Quality is in the touch. Run your
hand over the surface to see if the
sink is porous and rough, or pore-freeand silky smooth?
• Go for the smoothest surface. Itwill give you better sanitation sinceit’s easier to clean. No pores meansthe dirt and germs will simply run off.
• Ask for a demonstration on stainresistance. The best granite sinks willrepel red wine, coffee and heavy panswith absolutely no marks.
• Compare granite sinks for theirvisual beauty. The best will have anultra-fi ne structure and a gleamingfi nish.
• Choose a colour that it comple-ments the colour of your countertop.
Eco-minded shoppers may like toknow that last year, Novanni (novanni.ca) earned a CIPEC award for its op-erational eco-responsibility. Amongother initiatives, the company con-serves, recycles, and invests in renew-able energy. (NC)—After months of being cooped up, a lot of ho-meowners are beginning to feel their indoor living space is too small. Moving to a larger home is one answer, but for most Canadians, a change of that kind is simply not an option. There are, however, a number of solutions to make a room, or an entire home, look and feel more spa-cious, experts say.
“When renovating or building a home, or putting on an addition, a great way to create more physical space is to install radiant heat instead of a traditional forced air heating system,” says John Goshulak, heating ambassa-dor for Beautiful Heat. “Radiant heating uses a ductless design without the need for fans, blowers or vents in the fl oors. As a result, room layouts aren’t limited by vents or registers, and in the basement, bulky ductwork can be completely eliminated.”
For homeowners who are feeling cramped and con-fi ned, the following design tricks can help make a living space feel more spacious:
• Use light colour paint on the walls to make the room feel airy.
• Move large sized furniture against the walls and se-lect pieces that can have several functions, such as a trunk that can serve as storage and a coffee table.
• Let the light fl ow in. Use sheer window coverings or better yet, pull them back completely to make the maxi-mum use of natural light. If natural light isn’t available use a lamp as a focus point.
• Learn how to eliminate bulky ductwork, vents and registers with radiant heating at www.beautifulheat.com.
• Tidy up and move unwanted clutter out to keep the floor space clear.

(NC)—Searching for your fi rst home is exciting, but can also be overwhelming, both fi nancially and emotionally. You may have a lot of questions such as: Do I qualify for a mortgage? What’s a pre-approval? And what is amortiza-tion and why does it matter?
According to recent RBC Royal Bank research, 67 per cent of Canadians between the ages of 18-34 are looking to purchase their fi rst home within the next two years.
“You will benefi t by doing your research in advance and by setting a budget to help avoid any last minute sur-prises,” says Melissa Jarman, director of client strategies for RBC. “Online tools and calculators along with advice from a mortgage advisor can help you prepare for any unforeseen costs and assess which payment options best fi t your fi nancial situation.”
Jarman gives us three more tips to get started:• Prepare a budget—a budget will help you live within
your means and avoid unnecessary debt upon purchasing a home. To help alleviate fi nancial stress, set a maximum budget and fi nancial parameters. Online budgeting tools such as myFinanceTracker (www.rbcroyalbank.com/myfi -
nancetracker) can help track where your money is going.• Know your fi nancial options—many fi rst time home-
buyers do not know the options available when it comesto fi nancing a home. By speaking with a mortgage spe-cialist, you can explore a variety of fi nancial avenues andset your fi nancial goals.
• Find an affordable mortgage payment—mortgagepayment calculators can help determine how muchyour monthly payments will be, based on the amountborrowed, interest rates, mortgage term and paymentschedule. This link may be helpful: www.rbcroyalbank.com/products/mortgages/mortgage_calculators.html.

Simple tips for a naturally beautiful home
(NC)—Make your home fresh, warm and inviting by in-troducing natural elements into the space. Award-winning interior decorator Laura Stein offers four simple steps to bring nature indoors:
1. A little bit of wood goes a long way. Whether for-mal or casual, sleek or rustic, adding just a small amount of wood to a room makes it feel rich and more comfort-able.
2. Natural stone ups the chic factor in any space. Since natural materials are always associated with quality, us-ing stone and wood can help increase the value of your home.
3. Fresh cut fl owers and plants are a wonderful way to breathe life into a room. For a sophisticated look, group fl owers of the same colour together in the same vase. Or instead of a vase, get creative and use a water pitcher, a mason jar or even an old china teapot.
