Educational Studies Sept 2011 to May 2014 – Civil Engineering Degree - Teesside University

Construction Technology, Materials and Geotechnical Engineering –This module involved organising and attending meetings with my group to discuss a brief and to allocate work for each individual, so a clear plan could be implemented with given timescales confirmed. I learnt about the different properties of materials and how they can be used in structural design. I have a good understanding of land surveying materials and how they can be used in structural design. I have a good understanding of land surveying skills and understand how land reacts on various forces placed upon it by buildings and roads etc. I can design hand drawn elevations of buildings and structures, to a good standard.

Structural Mechanics and Structural Engineering – The structural mechanics module involved learning all of technical information from the design specific elements in a project, providing support to my team when required. Throughout this course I have learnt about how bending moments and shear forces can affect structures and how to design columns and beams from concrete and steel.

WWater Engineering – For this module I undertook experiments in a laboratory environment and studied the different reactions within dams, weirs and pipes. I studied design elements to control the flow and created reports on the findings and methodologies used. I also studied buoyancy and how it can be implemented when designing pontoon stability.

Sustainable ConstructionSustainable Construction – During the sustainable construction modules I developed efficiency skills by considering cost effective methods and being able to identify economical changes within the engineering design. These are favourable to clients and agencies, e.g. environmental agency. With these skills I could work with other internal and external engineers to improve efficiency in projects. This includes SUDS (sustainable urban drainage systems), use of materials to improve quality of living and how designs can improve the feeling of a building.

Feasibility Studies, PFeasibility Studies, Project Planning, Visualisation, Construction Management, Employment Skills, Contract Law and Professional skills – These modules developed my professional skills in understanding the importance of resourcing and planning effectively to focus and deliver projects to a high standard within a set timescale by prioritising and being organised. These modules have helped build my personal skills so I can hit the ground running when I go into full time employment.

My final dissertation studied how recycled materials can be used as a partial replacement of concrete aggregate and how the concrete properties are affected. The results and evaluations were very interesting.

Australia travelling gap year (February 2015 – MaAustralia travelling gap year (February 2015 – March 2016). I have expanded my life experiences during my travels around Australia, ranging from a sky dive in the Great Barrier Reef to working within the construction industry and living with a new family in Toowoomba for five months. I also worked within the fruit picking industry and energy sales marketing. I met and built relationships with people from all over the world with varied backgrounds and cultures. This has developed my confidence in working with a varied level of individuals and was an amazing experience.

Polar (NE) Ltd (June 2014 – February 2015). Full time employment, working as a factory labouFull time employment, working as a factory labourer and fabricator, assembling architectural fenestrations. Visiting a number of sites considering health and safety rules at all times working as part of a team, using large machines such as a CNC , drilling, routing and large sawing machines.

Footasylum (November 2012 – November 2014). I have worked part time at Footasylum where I gained further customer service experience and improved my communication skills with colleagues and customers. My responsibilities also included cash and card transactions, and reconciling the amounts at the end of the day. JJB Sports (October 2009 - October 2012). I worked part-time around my University and college schedule, I always worked extra hours to suit the business as and when required. I have never had a day sick leave and often worked other Colleague’s shift to support where necessary. I have excellent communication skills and always try to build rapport with Customers wherever possible. I was made redundant from this job in October 2012 when the company went into administration.
