Why is this discussion important?

• Change is a constant in the lives of rural people in Africa. Climate change adds an additional layer of complexity.

•Climate change affects people both directly (rainfall, temperature) and indirectly, by exacerbating other changes. These too are constantly changing, magnifying the uncertainty of the effects of climate change.

•Planning for uncertainty has always been a challenge: how to factor in climate change?

•Existing development interventions may be supporting communities to adapt to climate change: ACCRA has sought to understand how.

• Discuss and identify common challenges posed by CC.

• Identify common solutions ‘next steps’, including how to work on cross-cutting issues. Sharing info across countries.

• Allow the work of ACCRA and other players to feed into the identification on problems and recommendations for next steps/solutions.

• Discuss how to scale up climate change adaptation work both nationally and in the region.

• Build networks across the region – colleagues grappling with similar issues.

Aims of the conference

Today• Opening and introduction to issues (government

perspectives).• Knowledge fair – actors working on these issues. • ACCRA research findings and their meaning in-country. • WWF film and dinner.

Tuesday and Wednesday• Discussions in groups: next steps and the

way forward. Exchange of views and info across region.
