>> Clarendon residents are much more vigilant of any activity in their neighbourhood

NICOLE JOHN>>[email protected]

IN December 2013, residents in theClarendon area were determined to takeback their streets and rid them of criminals

and criminal activity following the recent spateof violence experienced in the area.

Thesituationcametoaheadwhenaresidentandprominentcitydoctorwasrapedandleft fordead while she was on her morning run.

Eagerresidentshavetakentosocialmedia toassist with the dissemination of informationabout any suspicious persons or behaviour inthe area, and so the Clarendon Crime Watchinitiative was born.

The Lower Clarendon Community Associa-tion (LCCA), led by Rob Evans, has beeninstrumental in leading this initiative, with thehope of implementing it through the entireClarendon suburb.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, RowanWhite, who assists with the Clarendon CrimeWatch Facebook page, said that the initiativehas created awareness and residents aremuchmore vigilant of any activity in the neighbour-hood, and the SAPS are able to respondaccordingly should the need arise.

White said that there are currently threeWhatsapp groups operating to put all involved

residents in touch with one another, making itpossible to send out alerts or photographs ofsuspiciousvehiclesorpersons intheClarendonarea.

“The Bobbies on the Beat continue to patrolthe streets, but have become largely ineffectiveas gangs of criminals have become moresophisticated and more mobile,” said White.

A neighbourhood watch has now been inoperation for the past fourweeks, with pairs ofvolunteerspatrolling theareaatdifferent timesduring the course of the evening.

“While these people act purely in anobservational capacity, they are in directcommunication with and are supported by theSAPS and armed response companies. Therearealso residentson the lookoutduring thedaywhile running errands, returning fromshopping trips or going about their dailyroutines,” said White.

White confirmed that there has been asignificant decrease in criminal activity, withonly two cases reported in the last month - asmashandgrab fromahomeandanattemptedvehicle theft.

“We have a group of very committed nightpatrolguys in theirearly twenties, whoallworkduring the day yet go above and beyond toensure that our streets are safewhile everyoneelse is sleeping,” said White.

The patrols extend all the way to the bottomof Villiers Drive in Prestbury, Taunton andRoberts Roads and all streets within the area.Whitesaidthatthereisdefinitelyaneedformorevolunteers for the watch, however he said thatthose involved in thecrimewatchcontinue tobecommitted.

“We will also be securing any vulnerableareas with fencing and razor wire, CCTVcameraswillbeinstalledatallentrypointstothesuburb and eventually throughout the suburb, dependingonthenumberofpeoplewhojointhisinitiative.

“Residents who subscribe to the associationwill hopefully haveaccess to all these cameras,”said White.

White said that themainobjective is tomakeClarendon one of the safest suburbs inPietermaritzburg, where visitors and residentsfeel safe in the neighbourhood knowing thatthere are people looking out for their safety.

“Obviously this initiative requires 100%community participation, and we appeal toeveryone living in the Clarendon area to join usin making our suburb a place where everyoneis safe out on the streets and in our homes.

“So a message to any criminals visitingClarendon would be, smile, you are beingwatched and are probably on camera,” saidWhite.

THE Msunduzi HospiceAssociationrecentlyhostedtheprovincial launch of the Care

CASIPO’s chief of party, Andre’Wagner, said that they were gratefulto the Department of Health formaking Hospice a strategic partnerand enabling them to develop andemphasize the importantofpalliativecare in South Africa.

The idea behind the five yearprogramme, which began in otherprovinces last year, is to integratepalliative health care into govern-mentpoliciesandtoget itonthesamelevelof importanceasprimaryhealthcare.

“We are excited to be a part of thedramatic changes to improve healthcare inSouthAfrica,andarecommit-ted to support the South Africangovernment,” said Wagner.

He added that CASIPO is notchanging the ways and methods ofwhatpalliativehealthcare iscurrent-ly,butmerelyenhancing thecare thatpatients receive.

“Our primary focus still remainsservice delivery.”

Wagnerrevealedthatnotevenonepercent of Hospice patients aretreated in-house; almost all patients

are treated in theirhomesbycaregiv-ers andnurseswhogoout to visit andcare for them, which iswhypalliativehealth care training is so important.

“With CASIPO we want to change

the delivery of health care in SouthAfrica, wewant to build capacity anddevelopmentofpalliativecareandgettraining included at an undergradu-atelevelofstudiesaswellaspostgrad-

HOSPITALS throughout the worldcelebrated International Nurses Day2014 on 12 May; honouring thosewomen and men who have dedicatedtheir lives to caring for others.

The date chosen celebrates thebirthday of Florence Nightingale, thefounder of modern nursing. The themethis year was ‘Nurses - A vital resourcefor health’, further emphasizing theimportance of nurses when it comes tocaring for others and the help theyprovide to the sick.

At various events held at localhospitals, nurses recited their pledgewhich they first made when they grad-uated as nurses. While holding candles,a symbol of the nurses lamp which isrepresented at all hospitals, nursespledged to continue their service ofhumanity and to endeavour to practisetheir profession with conscience andwith dignity.

The event held at Midlands MedicalCentre was dedicated to Doctor DunrajMani, the founding director of thehospital who passed away during theyear. Nurses were thanked for theircommitment to the profession, applauded for working long hours butmost especially for the care they havefor each and every patient they tend toduring their time of illness.

UMgungundlovu District MunicipalMayor, Yusef Bhamjee, was present atthe Netcare St Annes event where heencouraged nurses to continue learn-ing the new developments ofmedicine, emphasizing that educationis key regardless of how long they havebeen in service for.

“Nurses are a universal symbol ofcompassion and are more often thannot the first point of care for patientsin need. However, around the worldand particularly in South Africa, thework of nurses remains greatly under-estimated and undervalued,” saidShannon Nell, director of nursing andnursing education at Netcare.

Boys had to make an ID and registerto vote. Groups were formed to make posters and instead of political parties, boys voted for theirfavourite chocolate. There was a private voting booth where each boy made a mark on a ballot formbefore posting their vote in the ballot box. Great excitement was displayed by the boys as they casttheir vote and had their nail marked with nail varnish. Crunchies were voted the favourite chocolate.

FORthepast15years,Funk!hasbeenone of themost anticipated events onthe school performance calendar, and this year’s event at the HiltonCollege Theatre promises to be noexception.

Hosted by The Theatre - St Anne’sCollege and Hilton College Theatre,Funk! 2014will be staged onMay 17and May 19 to 21 at 7.30pm nightly.

Funk! evolved as an idea to createa dance programme for schools withvery specific aims:

• to unite schools in workingtowards a common goal;

• to give drama students and theirteachers the opportunity to createand rehearse pieces of dance theatrefor public performance; and

•toenableyoungpeopletoseethatmovement, dance and dance theatreis accessible to them and not only inthehandsofprofessionaladultdancecompanies.

Each school has to create a six-minute dance piece using any type ofmusical or textual accompaniment.

Theprogrammeaccommodatesarangeofchoreographicandperform-ance possibilities and provides the

perfect opportunity for schools toexperiment with new forms.

Funk! is not a competition, whichmeans that every piece on theprogramme is valued for itsindividual form and style and theoverall contribution that it makes tothe programme’s diversity.

The highlight of the production isalways the mass group finale whereall the schools perform together onstage.

Tickets are R60. To book phone033 383 0126.
