The Capital Sin of Pride
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Don’t you just hate it when people go on and on about themselves? When people brag all about their accomplishments or things or friends, doesn’t it annoy you? And people who think they are better than everyone else — who do they think they are? And people who are always right, never wrong! Narcissism, vanity, and pride are so easy to recognize in others, but like many vices, we do not easily recognize them in ourselves. Pride is probably the worst of the Seven Deadly Sins because it is the source of all the other vices. It is rooted in an inflated ego, an exaggerated emphasis on our self-worth and accomplishments. It causes us to feel as though we are better than others, despising others as less important than ourselves. It is the source of the other vices because when we sin, we are actually saying to God, “I know better than you and the Church!” It is the primordial sin of Lucifer. God wants our complete and happiness, but sin is to say, “I did it my way!” It weakens our love for others because we live by this idea: “Hey, it’s my world. You’re just liv-ing in it!” Humility is the virtue opposed to the vice of pride. It is recognizing that we are created by God and in need of his love and help; enabling us to form a true opinion of ourselves, dis-regard shallow popularity and be free from self-obsession. Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. Humility is: Submitting to God and legitimate authori-ty; Recognizing virtues and talents that others possess, particularly those that surpass one’s own, and giving due honor and, when required, obedience; Recognizing the limits of one’s talents, ability, or authority; and, not reaching for what is beyond one’s grasp. It is difficult to find examples of this virtue in politicians, athletes and movie stars. We look to the lives of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and all the saints to show us what humility looks like, and we seek to imitate this virtue. And if we struggle with pride, we must be honest with God in our prayer. In the sacrament of confession, this is where we learn humility. We hum-bly confess our sins, we don’t make excuses for ourselves, and we ask that God keep us humble. But be careful: when you ask God to make you humble, He truly will. So it takes a lot of humility to ask for humility.
Yours in Christ, Fr. Lowry

Fr. Lowry
