Happy 80th Birthday, Julia!

by Veronica Salinas

On Saturday, January 28th, many of us gathered together for a very auspicious event: the 80th birthday celebration of a most distinguished member of our running community, Julia Wilkerson, otherwise known as “Earth Mother,” to her Hasher sobriquet.

Julia asked me to convey her heartfelt appreciation to all who attended. She had a wonderful and memorable time talking to people near and dear to her. Many she had not seen in some time earnestly took the opportunity to honor a much loved and esteemed lady. More than 20 years of memories and stories were shared among the attendees. Joy and laughter filled the evening. In short, it was the best of times. Julia especially wanted to thank hostesses, Shelia Beshur and Martha Graf for putting it all together.

The author and Julia Wilkerson

To look at her, you would not believe Julia has actually reached this milestone in her life. She is ageless and still running and winning her age group!!! She was eager to reach this new age group because now she can slow down since there are few contenders that can match her times. Julia is one of the San Antonio running community’s dearest treasures and as I have always told her, “When I grow up I want to be just like ‘Earth Mother’.”

And...(drum roll please) inside restrooms for the volunteers and participants! We had about 275 runners and walkers for the 25k race and the relay. The weather was wonderful for an “Endurathon Saturday”-cold (but great running weather) and sunny.

Amy Archibald, top female masters, and Dave Walick, top male masters.

Shallyn Troutman, top female military, and Christian Koscinski, top male military.

Jody Hardwick and Valinn McReynolds, top female relay.

Alejandro and Felipe Perez, top male relay.

Meg and Randy Ohman, top mixed relay.

Gary Guerrero and Gerry Kaylor, top masters male relay.

Amy Rudolph and Rhonda Lux, top masters female relay.

Robin Neal and Thomas Roldan, top mixed masters relay.

Thanks to our sponsors: Soler’s Sports, Alamo Beer, and GU. Runners enjoyed GU Chomps during the race, and Alamo beer at the finish line. Soler’s Sports provided gift certificates for the door prizes and race bib!

Roundtable:

1. Tom asked those who would be attending the RRCA National Convention to inquire about other clubs’ websites and photo shows.

2. Al expressed a concern that the font of some of the race registration waivers was too small and that the wording should be consistent and correspond with the RRCA wording.

3. Bob reported that he will be using IAAP services to package packet items for Carrabba’s Half Marathon Relay. He suggested that the club consider shortening the Endurathon to a half marathon. He also said that in measuring the Birds of a Feather course, he found that the course set out by the Parks and Recreation Department was short and had to be revised. Joan suggested that we send the Parks Dept. all the park race courses the club uses for their approval.

4. Jim suggested putting on a one mile run every hour for the club’s participation in the Siclovia event on March 4th. He made a motion to offer free club membership and race entry to persons over 70 starting with the July 4th Run. Motion passed.

5. Sally reminded the club that Paul Baltutis expressed an interest in becoming the Mission 10 Miler race director. She is also putting together a Race Directors Guide.

6. Jerry brought up the club’s intention of making a donation in memory of Robert Beyer’s stepfather. Jim made a motion to donate $100 in his honor to the SARR scholarship fund. Motion passed. Jerry also presented the club with a $700 sponsorship check donated by Al Becken to send Scott and Jerry to the RRCA National convention.

Page 7: March newsletter

Hello RoadRunners,

For those of you who were able to join us for the Endurathon, I hope you enjoyed the new start/finish venue and revised course. We look forward to next year.

February got off to a rather wet start, with the monthly fun run rained out. However, the damp weather did not dampen the spirits of a few kids who begged their parents to bring

them out anyway. Once there, the kids had fun running as far as they could until huge puddles forced them to turn around.

It was great to see these future RoadRunners undaunted by a little rain.

Speaking of a little rain, ask anyone who participated in the Birds of a Feather about a little rain. There was just enough of a break in between downpours for us to run the 5K course.

Next up is the Prickly Pear on March 10, the ever-popular 50K and 10 Mile trail run. The course is mostly unpaved, single track trail, and is a favorite for those who enjoy trail running. As a heads up, this year packet pick up will be at Run On, instead of the hotel as in previous years.

As we continue to strive to improve the club and make SARR membership more attractive, I am pleased to announce our newest offering: free membership and free entry to SARR events for those age 70 and over! So if you know of anyone in need of a little physical activity, and meets the criteria, please let them know we welcome them with open arms.

On a sad note, the RoadRunners have experienced a loss in the family. Our sympathies and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Carl Winkler.

One last word, to all our faithful volunteers: at every event so far this new year, we have been blessed with tremendous participation, and I just would like to say one thing: Volunteers, you rock! Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

Jerry Negrete
