PROGRESS REPORT ON SURFACE EXPLORATION
IN THE
TAYLOR TOWNSHIP PORPHYRY ZONE
by
Dr. R. J. Shegelski

March 7, 1986
INTRODUCTION
Previous plotting of piercing points to gold mineralization
in the Porphyry Zone suggested that up to 1400 feet of horizontal strike length between the main and west zones was only lightly drill-tested. A program of wide-spaced surface drilling was therefore implemented in order to test for ore between these two zones (Figure 1). Older ground magnetic data from Hollinger Mines surveys had been interpreted to indicate only minor diabase dykes in the area. Four vertical holes were planned to be drilled down to the footwall of the Destor-Porcupine Fault between the Porphyry and West Porphyry Zones.
During early stages of drilling, unexpected diabase was encountered in holes SAT-5, SAT-6 where it had not been interpreted to occur. This led to an immediate reconnaissance total field magnetic survey in an east-west direction, across the area being drilled (see profiles A-A', B-B 1 , C-C 1 on Figure 1), The survey indicated an unusually wide Matachewan diabase and it was thus necessary to spot an additional hole (SAT-9) 300' east of SAT-6 in order to avoid diabase but in the process hole SAT-9 added only 100 feet of strike length to the Porphyry Zone. Hole SAT-8 was also modified to drill -80 0 west rather than vertical because it was considered to be spotted on the non-magnetic margin of a wide, steeply dipping dike. The hole drilled out of diabase at shallow depth and intersected the two gold zones of the West Porphyry Zone at depth, thus indicating that the eastward extension of this zone to the diabase is highly likely. Finally, hole SAT-7, which was drilled between two wide Matachewan dykes, encountered diabase at depth, thereby suggesting that a wedge of carbonated rocks approxi mately 900 feet deep occurs in this area.

RESULTS
(a) Total Field Magnetic Survey
East-west profiles were run over or near to drilllocations in order to accurately locate the dyke margins (Figure 2). Magnetic susceptibility readings were also taken of all representa tive rock types and the lowest susceptibility (i.e. zero) was recorded in the silicified margins of dykes and their immediately adjacent wallrock. Therefore, although total field magnetics are low over holes such as SAT-5 on profile A-A' and SAT-7 on profile B-B 1 (Map 2), they represent oxidized, silicified diabase margins and both holes encountered diabase. The two diabase dykes are indicated to be 350 feet wide according to the ground survey and drilling results suggest that they join together 900 feet below surface (Figure 5).
(b) Diamond Drilling
Five holes (SAT 5 to 9) were drilled in the area for a total footage of 4,313 feet. A total of 419 feet of casing was used of which 190' was left in as 120' in SAT-8 and 70' in SAT 9. Holes SAT-5 and SAT-6 drilled into diabase for 600' and 466' respectively. Hole SAT-7 started in carbonates and porphyry but drilled down into eastward dipping diabase at 700' and was terminated at 779'. Holes SAT-8 in West Porphyry Zone drilled -80 0 west to the Destor-Porcupine footwall serpentinites at 1184' length. Hole SAT-9 was vertical and drilled the western edge of the Porphyry Zone. Fifty scale cross sections of holes SAT-8 (Figure 3) and SAT-9 (Figure 4) are presented along with the nearby previous drill holes. Generalized assay results are presented in the Figures and detailed assays are included in Appendix I.
Hole SAT-9 in the Porphyry Zone intersected five separate grey pyritic porphyry zones. The second lowermost appears to be the equivalent of the porphyry drilled in the shaft pilot holes SAT-1
- 3 -
to SAT-4 with 3 - 10% pyrite and 23 feet of .OX oz/ton grades. The lowermost porphyry is less pyritic but the upper margin contains 9.3 feet of anomalous values (0.5 oz/ton if a 1.75 oz/ton assay is cut to one ounce). This lowermost porphyry was not drilled in hole HT-60.
Hole SAT-8 in the West Porphyry Zone intersected 30' of .OX oz/ton between 600 and 700 feet and is probably the equivalent "Blue Zone" of the West Porphyry Zone. The best intersection was centered on a sericitic basalt breccia containing several sites of visible gold 1067 to 1072 feet grading 0.515 oz/ton. A width of 37 feet of 0.12 oz/ton has been obtained following fill-in assays. This mineralized zone is near sedimentary rock and is likely the "Brown Zone" previously outlined on an isometric block diagram. The* occurrence of dark (chloritic?) material coating breccia fragments is reminiscent of the graphite-moly system in Porphyry Zone. It is also possible that the "sericitic porphyries" of the Porphyry Zone may be altered Mg-theoliitic basalts like the host rock for this mineralization in hole SAT-9. Examination of the longitudinal section (Figure 5) suggests a possible westward rake to mafic volcanics drilled and a probable downdropping of the West Porphyry Zone relative to the Porphyry Zone on the west edge of the wide Matachewan diabase dyke.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
A comparison of old magnetic surveys in Taylor Township with recent surveys indicates a need for modern, reliable, detailed ground surveys with a significant number of east-west cross lines prior to further detailed diamond drilling.
The present drill program has defined a large Matachewan diabase which physically separates the Porphyry Zone from the West Porphyry Zone such that downhole geophysical surveys would have to
...M
- 4 -
be conducted within and confined to each zone. Similarly, shallow
underground development east of this dike will likely be confined
to exploring the Porphyry Zone only.
Present drilling in holes SAT-8 and SAT-9 confirmed the
extensions of previously known zones but better intersections would
be required to substantially change the presently defined grades
in the Porphyry and West Porphyry Zones.
