Active andINDEPENDENTIn keeping with Masonic Homes’ purpose statement – Passionate People. Inspiring Lives. – the work we do provides great support for our residents and guests.

Independent living residents prefer a social community with a variety of amenities for support. They also want to know that they will be eligible to receive higher levels of care, and that they will be able to meet the associated costs, before these services are needed. Masonic Homes embraces these industry trends and is expanding its independent living services to offer an entrance fee option with a health care discount for residents of Masonic Home Village, now called The Village Active Lifestyle Community.

We see examples of residents – like Sister Rita Jarrell in the article on page 5 – who work or volunteer in our communities and campuses. They enjoy an active lifestyle that’s offered at The Village, Miralea, Spring Hill Village, and soon, The Meadow. Their work and their stories are an inspiration. Because we accept our responsibility with great enthusiasm and have an emotional connection with the people we serve, our new option at The Village will allow more residents the opportunity to continue their passions and inspire others.

Gary Marsh, President & CEO

Money isn’t everything, but it sometimes can help make the good things better. Could you use a little (or a lot) of extra cash each month? If the answer is yes, ask us about a charitable gift annuity for one or two lives. Your gift helps the Masonicare residents at Masonic Homes while you receive a monthly payment with a rate as high as 9%, depending on your age, by turning an asset with little or no income into something much more. For example, if you own CDs (Certificates of Deposit), you know they currently pay next to nothing. Do you have one maturing soon? Call us before you renew. You’ll have extra cash, receive a nice income tax deduction and save future taxes.

“Staying power” is an attribute that could be used to describe Rev. W. Howard Coop, a retired United Methodist minister and Central Kentucky resident.

Coop has been a Mason since 1952. He is a Past Master and current Chaplain of Lancaster Lodge No. 104; a member of W. R. Selby, Sr., Chapter 4 in Danville; and a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor of the Scottish Rite of Louisville.

Having been a part of Masonic history and service for more than 60 years, Coop says one of the most satisfying aspects of his involvement is helping select the recipient of a college scholarship given annually to a local high school student. He has seen the impact it can make on a young person who might not otherwise have a chance to attend college.

Coop’s staying power hasn’t been limited to his membership in the Masons. He served as pastor of Lancaster United Methodist Church in Garrard County for four years and 42 years as a pastor of Methodist Churches in the Kentucky Annual Conference. Since 1991, Coop has been contributing a weekly column, “An Encouraging Word,” for the Garrard Central Record and nine other weekly newspapers in the region. In addition, he has had articles published in numerous other publications.

He and his wife, Kathryn, who passed away two years ago, spent many years traveling extensively throughout Europe and the United States. Looking for a way to use his investments to help others, Coop recently made a decision to set up an annuity with Masonic Homes of Kentucky. “I had some money in CDs. You don’t get rich off of CDs,” he says with a chuckle. “I decided to make a gift to Masonic Homes and have a little income from it. Since I have no children, I can think of no more worthy place to invest.”

Howard Coop’s gift provides Masonic Homes staying power

Volunteerism is Ursuline Sister’s key to healthSister Rita Jarrell is a living example of someone who has found strength in serving others. The Ursuline Sister is a five-time cancer survivor, a chaplain for Hosparus of Louisville and an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society.

And as a resident of The Village Active Lifestyle Community, Rita has found an ideal balance for work, leisure, spiritual reflection and support.

Three years ago, Rita was living at the Ursuline Motherhouse, less than two miles from Masonic Homes’ Louisville Campus — where two of her fellow sisters were already living. She was familiar with the campus, having visited often as a hospice chaplain. “My own health had changed, and I felt it was the right time for me to regroup,” she says. “Masonic Homes’ positive outlook on aging – and meeting the individual’s spiritual, emotional, and physical needs – was greatly important to me. I knew it was where I needed to come.”

Rita’s health rapidly stabilized. “I’m not in a wheelchair as they predicted I would be by now,” Rita says. “I walk 10,000 steps a day on the campus. It’s been a very positive thing.”

Rita also leads regular prayer groups at Masonic Homes. “That keeps me busy and in tune with what’s going on around me. And if someone here falls ill, I offer my support as a certified chaplain.”

She also stays busy with the American Cancer Society — working as an advocate, offering screenings, and counseling women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. That worked earned her the American Cancer Society’s highest volunteer honor, the St. George National Award.

Jarrell herself beat breast cancer in 1982. She later overcame three types of skin cancer — basal cell, squamous cell, and potentially deadly melanoma. Two years ago, she was successfully treated for colon cancer.

Dealing with her own adversity gave Jarrell the tools to work as a member of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services’ Crisis Response Team. When tragedies occur, she assists police and other officials in providing immediate support to victims and their loved ones.

So for someone accustomed to extending a helping hand at every turn, Jarrell is grateful for the support she receives from Masonic Homes. The independent living community allows her to continue pursuing her passions, all the while offering her the peace of mind and services that keep her healthy.

CountMeIn employee giving campaign surpasses goal

Thank you to the following employees who made pledges for 2016:

One hundred fifty employees pledged to the CountMeIn employee giving campaign in 2015, nearly doubling the number of participants from last year. Pledges totaled $20,422, surpassing the goal of $20,000.

The funds raised through employee giving will help support the employee and resident START Wellness Program, making Masonic Homes’ campuses a happier and healthier place to work and live.

Donna has worked at Masonic Homes for over 20 years. Over two decades, she has seen major expansion and enhancements take place, including the dining experience. Without question, she and her staff work hard to make mealtime enjoyable. In the dining rooms she manages, Donna purchases special items for the residents – favorite flavored teas for one gentleman, and oversized bowls emblazoned with the University of Kentucky logo for a woman who loves both cereal and the Wildcats. She knows these little touches make residents feel special. “We want to make them feel like they’re sitting down for a meal at home,” Donna says. She does anything she can to improve the lives of the residents she serves – and that’s exactly why Donna donates to the CountMeIn campaign.
