The Homes’ 13th annual Great Day of Service brought over 400 volunteers from Masonic lodges and community groups across Kentucky.

Members of Plain City No. 449 traveled the farthest – from Paducah to Louisville – to plant and mulch the campus. Swigert-Middletown No. 218 boasted the most volunteers.

Homes’ staff, residents and family members also pitched in on both the Louisville and Shelbyville campuses. They mulched, painted and washed resident cars.

This year, each campus formed a human Square & Compasses. If you would like to purchase an 8” x 10” print for $15, please contact Brenda Travis (502.753.8892, [email protected]). All proceeds benefit the residents at Masonic Homes.

On service and volunteersIt is not surprising, but always heartening, to see so many people dedicated to one of the basic premises of Masonry – to care for those who often are unable to provide fully for themselves.

That’s the spirit of Jack and Gladys Jonas. The couple worked hard, lived simply, and saved all their lives, and remembered Masonic Homes in their final plans. A trust bearing their names has gifted $1.4 million to Masonic Homes of Kentucky.

We also see that spirit of caring on our Great Day of Service, when volunteers Gary Marsh, President & CEO

A Builder’s SpiritUpon his retirement in 1979, Jack traded his passion for building homes to raising his garden. The couple were avid gardeners, and Jack often exchanged ideas with his friend and WHAS-TV’s iconic “Weekend Gardener” Fred Wiche. Nothing from the Jonas’ garden was wasted. It was all either eaten, sold or canned.

The year Jack retired, Mr. Franklin was hospitalized because of an accident. Jack and Gladys visited him in the hospital every night, bringing fruit and candy to supply the entire floor. That’s when Jack and Mr. Franklin became close. A few years later, Jack would ask Mr. Franklin to settle his estate and care for Gladys if he were to pass first.

Jack was a Mason, and Gladys was an Eastern Star. While Jack was not particularly active in the Masonic Lodge, longtime friend and business associate Virgil Hall says, “He lived the life of a Mason more than he attended the lodge … They were great people. She was a teammate with him.”

Jack Jonas passed away in 1998, and Gladys died at the age of 93 in 2014. Their unassuming, hardworking life and good stewardship is now bearing fruit for organizations they held close to their hearts. The Gladys and Roby “Jack” Jonas Trust gifted $1.4 million to Masonic Homes of Kentucky in late 2014, and the Homes recently received the final distribution from that trust. Other equal beneficiaries of the estate were Hosparus and the American Red Cross.

According to Bruce Lott, vice president of Fraternal Relations for Masonic Homes, “The Jonas gift is one of the largest we’ve ever received, and we are grateful for their dedication to one of the basic premises of Masonry – that is, to care for those who often are unable to provide fully for themselves.”

Says Mr. Franklin of his Uncle Jack’s success in business and in life, “It seemed like everything he touched turned to gold.” Gold, indeed. The couple certainly forged a successful formula – a bricks-and-mortar life plus a little green-thumb nurturing equals a treasured legacy for those in need.

from Masonic Lodges all over Kentucky, community groups, staff and volunteers come together to make improvements that benefit residents. Every day, we are humbled by the caring of our volunteers, donors, and visitors who raise the spirits of all involved.

The team at Masonic Homes of Kentucky gives exceptional care to our residents and clients. Our Above & Beyond awards go to those members of our wonderful staff who go the extra mile. It’s a reminder that the entire team, from nurses and assistants to maintenance workers and cooks to physical therapists, works hard every day to make life better for those who need extra care.

Volunteers improve residents’ experiences in many waysWhether through Great Day of Service or taking extra time with residents, Masonic Homes volunteers improve the lives of those we serve.

An example of our caring volunteers are the members of the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Post 61 of Louisville. This group of dedicated volunteers has been supporting Sally’s Garden memory care neighborhood residents for more than five years.

Read more about a recent colorful event the AMVETS Auxiliary put on for the Sally’s Garden residents on page six. If you’re interested in volunteering for Masonic Homes, please call 502.259.9627.

On a rather gloomy April afternoon with heavy rains, the community room of Sally’s Garden memory care neighborhood was awash in color. Silk flowers and ribbons in every hue of the rainbow were scattered about as loving hands helped residents create festive hats for the upcoming Kentucky Derby season.

Those hands belonged to members of the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Post 61 of Louisville, a group of dedicated volunteers of who have been supporting Sally’s Garden residents for more than five years.

The AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary is made up of women with a relative who has served in the military. They support and raise public awareness for veterans’ issues and volunteer their time at programs that serve hospitalized veterans and others in hospital and medical settings, and with a variety of organizations.

Post 61 Auxiliary members have been serving Sally’s Garden and its two dozen residents since 2011, both financially and with their time.

The group’s hospital chairwoman, Mary Louise Kilkelly – whose husband is a U.S. Army Reserve veteran and a Mason — finds the experience to be fulfilling for both her fellow members and for Sally’s Garden residents. “We try to create a festive atmosphere. We have a pianist who comes during our visits and plays some of the classic songs from when the residents were young. They really respond to that. It’s amazing how many of the old songs they will remember. They talk about their families. It seems to help stimulates memory for some.”

The group’s visits celebrate major holidays and feature a game or activity such as bowling, bingo, or crafts. A recent luau-themed visit was a big hit. The auxiliary also provides a birthday gift and a $75 gift to Sally’s Garden in the resident’s honor during the month of their birthday.

Marsha Leistner, Program Director of Sally’s Garden, says the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary visits are a welcome supplement to the services offered by Masonic Homes. “Their visits are wonderful for our residents. They always come up with something different and creative, and they’re getting the residents up and active as much as possible.”

Joy Herb, a longtime Auxiliary member and former president, noted that it’s not necessarily easy to interact with every resident. “I’ve worked in health care, so I know how challenging Alzheimer’s and dementia can be for caregivers. We came here because we all wanted a place where we could be hands on, and we fell in love with the people we’re serving,” she says. “And I think we make a difference.”

AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Post 61 creates memories for Sally’s Garden residentsHome Delivered MealsMasonic Homes has extended the reach of its nutritious food service to the community by partnering with SeniorCare Experts in their home-delivered meals program. Five days a week, year-round, the main kitchen at Masonic Home of Louisville prepares 75-100 meals a day for the program. Independent living residents on campus help package the meals and get them ready for delivery volunteers.

Not-So-Newlywed event fundraises for Inspired Wishes program

On July 19, MHKY held the Not-So-Newlywed Game. Based on the 1970s television show, “The Newlywed Game,” the event put popular couples in our community against each other for a night of laughs, jabs and “oh my”s. Contestants included Aaron and Susan Miller, Dwight and Susan Witten, Lynda Lambert and Steve Lannert, and Neville and Jessica Blakemore. Dwight and Susan Witten won and were crowned Mr. and Mrs. Olmsted. The event was a great success, raising nearly $30,000 for MHKY. Inspired Wishes

All proceeds benefited our Inspired Wishes program, providing once-in-a-lifetime moments for our residents and guests. The program already has granted dozens of wishes from hot air balloon rides, reliving high school football days and biplane flyovers. Most recently, we were able to fulfill an MHL resident’s lifelong dream by sending him and his family to a Coldplay concert at the KFC Yum! Center.Make dreams come true
