Arts center is toe-tapping newsfor dance community

WRR listeners have a real treat in store in the not toodistant future when the Dallas Center for thePerforming Arts opens in 2009. The reactions of thelocal dance community range from cautiously opti-mistic to completely ecstatic.

Texas Ballet Theater artistic director BenStevenson says that the center’s benefits will betwofold: “Because there are venues of different sizes, both large and small, it will promote dance not justfrom the local companies in the metroplex. But in addi-tion, because of the huge Winspear Opera House, it

will attract dance companies of international status to come to Dallas.”Titas director Charles Santos says that he thinks the impact on the dance community

of the new center will be: “great!” “I wish it were opening tomorrow!” he adds enthusias-tically.

Margaret Putnam, dance critic for the Dallas Morning News and freelance contributorto Dance Magazine hopes “that dancers are consulted by the architect so that the floorsare appropriate for dance.”
